The edgy thought provoking comedian George Carlin has died. He died of a heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital. He was 71 years old. RIP George :(

I was going to create a thread about the same thing, but you and Stewie (Dung Heaver probably would have beaten me, too) got to it first.
My heart dropped when I went to check my Yahoo mail and saw the headline. I might disagree with some of his points, but there is simply no denying that he was a very, very funny man who will be dearly missed.

All of those people never said things like the following:
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.
I hold with Stalin - wow, can't believe I just wrote that:
A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic.

If you've seen any modern-day comedian perform (live, on TV, etc.) then you've seen George Carlin's influence (and obviously didn't know it!).
Simply put, he was one of the most influential comedians of the last 40 years (give or take).
I'd guess that over 99% of the stand-up comics in the last 25 years would rank him in the top 3 comedians....ever. (Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor being the other two.)

Comedy is now dead.
I will never laugh again.
Carlin was THE MAN. He knew what to say & how to say it. I think the only person like him now is Lewis Black.
This is a dark, dark day in the entertainment world.
I'm just glad that he left us all of those HBO specials, and thanks to DVD, Carlin will live forever.
Funny side note: I first saw Carlin on the show "Shining Time Station" when I was younger. I remember he narrated the stories of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends. I think he came in after Ringo Starr stopped narrating the show.
Imagine my surprise years later to hear "Mr. Conductor" say "f**k". :)

Weak man... Definitely my favorite comedian of all time next to Richard Pryor =\ Now they're both gone. Never met the guys, but I've seen just about everything they've ever created/said. This is like losing someone very close to you. For me anyways.

RockBandRocker: I wouldn't really consider Lewis Black like Carlin. Sure, both did the whole "angry guy" shtick, but Lewis Black half the time is angry for the sake of being angry... Carlin had significantly more range.
That aside, today is a sad day indeed... Carlin was one of the greats, and am fortunate to have seen him live just a couple of years ago. I think a re-reading of Napalm and Silly Putty as well as Braindroppings is in order.

The Conducter? You mean Sir Topham Hat?
My son really likes Thomas the Tank Engine. I was shocked when I watched a video and said, "Hey! That's George Carlin!" So I guess I had the opposite reaction.
Did anyone ever see his short-lived Fox sitcom? My brother and I watched it and thought it was hilarious.

First Harvey Korman, now George Carlin. It's been a sad month in comedy.:( I gasped and said, "oh my gosh!" when I saw this on the news this morning. I've always laughed at his outlook and use his quotes quite a bit in my daily life cause they just work.:) RIP, George.
ETA: Dick Martin was the other comedian I was trying to remember. I told my mom I wondered if it was going to come in three's after we heard Harvey Korman died and I guess it does. All 3 died in less than a month and I like all 3 of them although I know less of Dick Martin. It's probably why I couldn't remember. Rambling....LOL

The sad thing was that I was still, if I recall, in elementary or middle school when George Carlin was doing that role (edit: looked it up, he started when I was in third grade)... and I already recognized him (he wasn't the first Conductor, that was Ringo Starr).

Was kinda hoping that somebody had up on YouTube his last Tonight Show appearance a few months back with Ann Coulter... basically the appearance was set up to hopefully be a sparring match between the firebrands, and they ended up largely finding common ground and feeding off of each other for one-liners.
Even in the face of adversity (and daunting expectations), the Class Clown was a class act.

Agreed.
I mean, when your material spawns a U.S. Supreme Court case, you've had a pretty huge impact on your chosen profession.
And Ufford at WithLeather said it best:

My first exposure to Carlin was Toledo Window Box. I still like his earlier stuff more because he was not as blunt about religion and politics then.
While I disagree with him on a few things, he was still hilarious. He could make fun of something I believed directly and I'd still laugh.
Anyway, I hoppe he was right about that no God stuff, cause it's too late to change his mind now.

My parents bought me tickets to see George Carlin in concert in 1989. I saw him again a few years later at the University of Florida.
Two of the greatest nights of my life - the first time I saw him, he did the "Incomplete List of Impolite Words" from memory. My buddy and I were in awe of him.
He has always been one of my favorite comedians, and the news of his passing is a shock and very saddening.

"HBO — the network that was always the first home to Carlin’s lengthy comic diatribes — will blow out a chronological marathon featuring 11 of the comedian’s specials for the cable channel. (He made at least a dozen.) First, HBO2, runs the following schedule of back-to-back specials
Then, “Saturday Night Live” pays tribute by rerunning its premiere episode from 1975, which featured Carlin as host.
Remembering Carlin, "Saturday Night Live" creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels said in a statement: "You never forget the people who were there at the beginning. George Carlin helped give 'Saturday Night Live' its start as our first host. He was gracious, fearless, and most important of all, funny."
Carlin performs three individual monologues on the program. Music guests are Janis Ian and Billy Preston, plus a landmark performance from comedian Andy Kaufman."
