I was debating all week whether to drive down to DC early to get some time with the game. I decided to wait and take my fiancee with me to the Saturday stop at College Park during tailgating hours of UMD vs. Va
I got there at 1, as the schedule stated by I found two things. One the bus awning had been decimated by the elements the previous night before and two, the tour crew wouldn't be arriving until 4 o clock. this was a UMD flub as they weren't allowing any vehicle access until 4, even though there were people with cars parked and grilling before that time. I decided to wait it out by going to get a 6 pack and by the time I got back the tour crew had arrived and they were assessing the damage. They told me it'd take them maybe 30 mins to setup and we could start jammin. No Harmonix employee's but the team on the bus was a ****ing stellar group of guys. and they were really good at the game too, ended up racking up like...almost 900K on Dani California. The tour build unfortunately suffers from all the problems everyone else has complained about, broken guitars, freezing consoles blah blah blah.
None of that mattered. I met a kid James and another kid Avi, I'm assuming both UMD students (James if you're reading this PM me your gamertag) and we were immediately jamming. We decided to take the stage and get some schwag and took on Wanted Dead or Alive. According to the crowd/crew I killed the vocals but I still failed out. One thing I haven't heard people discuss is the vocals and this was very difficult. They told me later in the day that the mic needed an adjustment. We then just killed the next 3 hours or so playing songs on the main stage (you can play whatever you want out there, but no recording and as long as noone was waiting to get on stage.)
I thought they had a good turnout, unfortunately not to many stage participants. People were intrigued and the fact that we had it up to 11 (the guys complained about some of the stops limiting thier volume...one broad apparently booked them NEXT TO A LIBRARY....whiskey tango foxtrot) def brought in some spectators. I had also forgot the recorded sessions are being examined for a contest, well I didn't really know until they told me. I did meet a nice foursome from NoVa who also hung out with us most of the day. There was an MTV camera crew also there. They were doing some filming about the game and about the event. Standard stuff.
I'm going to also tell another story and then I'll make another post about my thoughts on the songs/instruments. It turned out that one of the guys with the film crew was a guy attached to the local indie Baltimore music scene and we ended up knowing some of the same people. So we were chatting for a while and it turned out the MTV crew was going to hang out with Dan Deacon (local act, doing some national touring) and play the game and asked me and fiancee if we wanted to COME ALONG. They were going to be playing at a small venue, downtown. Then they were like "you don't happen to have a big screen do you?" and i'm not sure if that was just a joke or a serious question but I was like "actually I do, is 42" large enough for whatever you guys wanna do?" they were like..."why do you have a 42" teevee?" So numbers were exchanged and a few hours later we were hauling my set into the venue and we began setup. I brought my x-plorers, which was a good thing considering that the Strats the crew supplied were broken to crap. one didn't fret and the other didn't whammy right. So we jammed with the x-plorer's (I also brought GHII but in my drunkeness I didn't PUT IT IN TO TEST WITH THE STRATS :( ) We got to the venue around 10PM and playing till 2AM! It really made what would have been an already awesome Saturday EPIC. Big thanks to the crew for coming out and making my day.

Guitar
The Strats were pretty solid. It took me all of one song to get the button placement and I was playing on expert. Some of the solos are hard, not Guitar Hero hard but we already knew that. I do not like the texture of the Start and Select buttons, those soft buttons were weird. I also expected the 5 way switch to be a knob and not a toggle like they have. Also in this build the effects showed up on screen as you were playing which was a little hard to read and quite frankly weird. It's a way to vary up your act from other groups though if you can use it properly which i didn't take a lot time to do. I was just interested in playing.
Drums
I expected the drums to be much harder than they were. By 2AM I was drumming on Hard and getting 80+ Percent. I only failed out of a few tracks and that wasn't until I started moving from medium to hard. So much fun and VERY loud. I tried to get better at playing softer and only really tearing into the crash pad, mostly for visual effect. Gonna be a long road to Stevie Wonder like awesomeness.
Vocals
We had a mic stand on stage and for presentation that really goes a long way. At the venue they had a mic stand as well. The vocals are hard, it takes some serious tweaking I think which I didn't really have a lot of time to do since most of the people at the venue just wanted to play the game instead of examining the options and stuff like that.

Woah, that sounded like it was great. I really wish I could've made it to the Chicago tour stop. I live just outside of Chicago, and I didn't hear about the Rock Band tour thing until after they've already stopped there and left. Argh!
Anyway, thanks for writing all that. It was a great read.

band video finally was upped, i'm the singer, girlfriend on vocals.
also i should note that when i played it at the party that was on my tv which is a sony DLP 42" kdf-e42a10 which i believe is two years old. i bought it last year at best buy and it was a floor model so maybe its a lil less than that but there was no lag and i never even thought to go to the calibration screen since i also never had the lag problem with guitar hero ii on this set so it was an afterthought.
i also didn't get to answer my question about 5.1 sound since the venue didn't have a receiver but a pa system.

Sounds like good times. Did the Xplorer work out well as a substitute?

Yeah they worked fine. In this case better ha ha.
In retrospect I'm sure the footage they shot of the "afterparty" probably won't be able to be used since we were using the x-plorer's instead of the strats and that's a copyright thing i'm almost positive of but its not my fault they gave them crappy demo units.
and to the guy about the guitar and singing thing yeah you're right, i'm just an idiot and typed that wrong.

Also I'm probably not hte first to say this but I do not like the new note graphics. The squares are hard to read and i didn't even realize the smaller ones were the HOs/POs. its really unfortunate they couldn't have shared the GH GUI as playing Guitar Hero II and III just seems right. I'm sure that's in no part to a.) we were 4 players crammed on a small what 24" screen on the tour bus? and b.) i was way to drunk to concern myself about those types of details at the special screening and c.) in time with playing the game more you won't even notice the difference.
I did like during i think the unison moments where the in-game crowd would sing along with the players. i thought that was pretty cool and really helped to immerse you in the moment.
also playing bass gets a lot of love. i noticed that whenever i was doing well playing bass it would show bass groove and other things like that above my bar. we also unlocked a few achievements but i didn't take a lot of time to check that portion out.
maybe someone else can help me ot with this but there were times when selecting guitar and bass that the player sides got swapped? like it seems to be tied to the number of controller you have but i couldn't find out.
