Nevermind is not a great album. The only reason people believe it to be so great, was because it was different at the time then the rest of the music currently available.. (metal, hair bands, pop). It had a different sound, and different style of vocals. Are there some catchy songs on the album? of course. You could pretty much say that of ANY album though.
If Nirvana/Nevermind came out in this day and age, they would not last long as people would get tired of it pretty darn quickly. Just like if some new hair metal band started today, they'd have been big in the late 80's, but now it would be a 'seen it/heard it/sounds the same as all the rest'.

I read some funny story somewhere that back around 1992, there was supposed to be some MTV appreciation show that featured Kurt Cobain and a tribute to some artist like Jimi Hendrix. But the producers nixed it because they didn't think that the young audience would have heard of Jimi Hendrix.
Then, a few years ago, around 2005, they wanted to do a similar tribute, but make it a tribute to Kurt Cobain. But that was axed because they didn't think that the young audience would have ever heard of Kurt Cobain.

kurt cobain was awesome. but if you ask me dave grohl was a better drummer than kurt cobain is a guitarist. but umm nevermind is nirvanas worst album ever. its when they had there old 5 drummers and a rythym guitarist. if you ask me use the album bleach

That's... the whole point. It was so different at the time, and was seen as revolutionary. What if the Led Zeppelin released an album today? They would be seen as a cliche rock band. What if Metallica released Ride the Lightning? That's all been done before.
Timing is what can make the difference between okay and revolutionary.

Heh. Still, buying the rest of the songs one might as well buy the whole album, those songs you'd get free right?
... And I'd like Something in the Way :(
