View Full Version : Drum Kit Modifications

We've seen some smashing creativity with the Guitar Hero series controllers. People dressing them up with everything from stickers to custom paint jobs and LED's. Some folks have even gone so far to add solo buttons or build new casings. On the verge of Rock Band, I am beginning to wonder what people have in store for the drum kit. It seems to me that it has just as much potential, if not more.
Every discrete part of the set disassembles, allowing you to make tweaks to the pedal, frame, pads, or sticks. People can do cosmetic changes (painting, LEDs) as well as functional changes (such as the pedal). I can't wait to see what clever ideas people come up with.

I frequently retool my controllers, but I'm reserving ideas until I get my hands on the drumkit.

I'm building an eDrum kit this fall, and I might be making a box to get recognized as a RB controller. Might also just add a second raised hi-hat pad for crossing over.

Someone needs to make fake bass drum heads that clip onto the legs of the set, making the set look more complete. The "head" itself would be customizable with your band logo.

Cardboard + plotter/poster printer + adhesive = bass drum logo

I want to make a kick pad that I could hook up a set of real double-kick pedals to. Possibly an additional hi-hat for crossover play.

I plan to make the kick pedal into a drum pad asap.

My friend and I plan to have a drum that burst flames when you hit it. We wanted to code it to do that only if you hit the right note but that may not be possible.
We ripped an old drum kit for prototyping. Still has it's kinks.

I'm interested to see what kind of drum creations people come up with. One of the first things made will probably be a 2nd pedal.
I wonder what else people will think of, custom paint jobs? Custom drum pads? Who knows!

How would you handle tracks that require 2 pads and the pedal simultaneously? Hold 3 sticks at once? :D

Hey how easy would it be to make a real drum kit an RB kit?

You'd just need hardware to convert the trigger analog output into a digital signal. Then wire the digital signals to a controller in the correct locations. That should work, although you might have to spoof the game into recognizing it as a controller. I plan on doing this eventually.

Wow. May try it next spring when I plan to finish the pyro drums.
Wow x2. You know instruments. Any idea where to get the stuff to do this? Anything special you suggest?

Honestly, I plan to add a cup holder in some way.

Nice one. A standard for any modded drum kit.

I'd have to see the kit up close to see exactly where to mount one. But I know that's gonna be my first project.

What you would most likely want is the analog board, and the digital outputs should serve the correct purpose. You may need to match the voltages and use diodes if multiple pads trigger the same button. If you have a friend who is into electronics, get them to help you. The info on that site should be enough to get them started. Good luck, and I'm looking forward to your pyro drumset. :D

The first thing I'm going to do is move the buttons out of the way. I had a bad habit of smacking them when I was rocking the drums too hard on the tour.

Some modding ideas can be cool, but I think once it costs more than $5 or so, it ventures into the "ridiculous" realm. It is a game afterall, no need to make it anything more than that.
I second the cup holder though, as long as it's wide enough to hold a koozie. Maybe I can splurge on a little hook to hang my mullet wig onto, when not in use. All set for Bon Jovi at that point.

It probably wouldn't be too tough to make a hinged shield to cover the buttons - Hmm...
