Uhhh... So how do I contact my other bandmates midgame? I apparently can't use the mic, since singers will be muted. What about the other players? Anyway to talk to each other?

I've been wondering this myself. Perhaps only in the lobby?

Why would you want to? Is there anything that crucial you need to say in the middle of a song?

Why wouldn't I want to? I'm a social guy. In social gatherings, I like to communicate. I also might want to do awesome rock star stuff such as encouraging my bandmates or yelling out awesome stuff to the "audience".
I can think of plenty of reasons I'd want to communicate with my bandmates, but the main is because it's a social event and I'd like to be social while doing it.

You can probably use the mic/headset when not playing a song to talk to each other. The only reason you can't hear the vocalist is because of lag issues, it doesn't mean there can't be voice chat.

You can just start a private chat with everyone in your game. Microsoft requires all games made for the 360 to support this, so this will probably work. I guess it sucks for you if you have a PS3 though.

I'm fairly sure everyone will be able to talk in the lobby to discuss what song to play or what instruments people would like to play, and the voice will probably cut off for everyone once the loading screen is about to come up. I'm sure it'll work for 360 and PS3 through their own respective headsets.

Yeah, well, you can only private chat with one person at a time, so...

Personally, I'd like to be able to talk during the song though. Just because I'd like to imitate rockstar life and yell out topical things at the beginning or during the song. Example: Go to a concert in Indianapolis in the spring. At least one band will ALWAYS ask, "You guys excited for the race?!"
While I hate that particular question, I'd love to do stupid crap like that. I want the whole experience.

I'm pretty sure I've managed to get more than 2 people into a private chat lobby, although I haven't used it in a while.

Well, you can be in chat with more than one person at a time, but you can't be talking with more than one at a time. You'd have to switch between people, which wouldn't work very well in mid-song.

I definately want to talk during the songs. I would be so pissed if I couldn't and I bet a lot of people wouldn't even get the game if you couldn't. When I play guitar hero 2 with my friends we don't just sit there listening to the song... we talk too.

I seriously doubt that.

I would want to communicate to my band mates when I would want to activate "OVERDRIVE" that way we can plan ahead of time and be able to do it at the same time. Unless they made something for that I dunno. 29 Days left!!!!!!!!!!!

I lack the coordination to do that. I just can't play and talk at the same time.

This one's a really good point. As far as I can tell, having all 4 people activate overdrive at the same time is the best possible use of overdrive, so being able to time that over voice chat would be pretty awesome. Another example would be avoiding wasted overdrive on an attempted "Save" for a fallen bandmate. If Bassist drops out, and both guitarist and vocalist have overdrive, one can call the save and prevent the other from wasting his at the wrong time.
So there are definitely a few non-social reasons to want chat during songs. I hope it's an adjustable option at the least.

well, I'm practically forcing like 6 of my friends on Xbox live to get it so we can all play together and the only reason they're gonna buy it is because we're close friends and so if we couldn't talk then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want it.

If everyone talks during the song that is going to slow everything down a ridiculous amount. It wasn't worth Harmonix's time to try and figure that out. I'm sure you can talk before you pick the song and then when you are online it will cut out the voice for everyone. With a game this intricate with timing it just couldn't be done in that short amount of time.

I guess people will find anything to complain about, regardless of how cool the game is.

I wasn't complaining; I just think that would add to the fun for me. I'm absolutely getting this game either way, but I'd really like to be able to talk during the game.

I don't know why people actually say they would want talking during the performances. That would be so annoying, are you kidding me?
And I trust there is absolutely 0 chance this will ever happen.
I'm sure there will be an online lobby to matchmake, along with an individual option to make a private group lobby before going into a song/setlist.
