I hope one of you HMX guys will give some insight into this. Why did you make Rock Band High Def in 720p only? There are a lot of us with sets that are for 1080i which is a broadcast standard as 720p is not. I really don't want to have to go buy another 73 inch TV, just so it will play an antiquated system. Will future versions of Rock Band be in 1080i and 1080p?

1080p sets will adjust accordingly..
however... some older 1080i tv will not and will display it as 480i (ugh)
I sold my old 1080i and got a 1080p for this very reason.

I'd imagine the problem is processing power. 1080i uses a ton more processing than 720p since every 1080i frame has 1,112,000 pixels more than 720p. That's 2.25 times the pixels hence the same multiplyer or more in processing power needed. Rendering on the fly at that high of resolution would be pretty tough with 4 instruments, 4 characters, etc.

720p is actually better quality than 1080i. The 1080i signal alternates the update of the odd and even lines between each frame. The 720p signal updates every single line on each frame. It'll improve a number of areas on the picture quality as well as leaving some processing power for other tasks.

Both 720p and 1080i are broadcast standards. 1080i is arguably more antiquated than 720p. Most new TV's coming out use 1080p which is the best of both worlds. It's been heavily debated as to which is better between 720p and 1080i as 720p is a crisper, fuller picture (being progressive scan versus interlaced) while 1080i is a higher resolution.
Any reasonably recent 1080i TV will simply take the 720p input and convert it to 1080i. The only ones that won't are the first generation of 1080i HDTV's which came out before 720p was a standard.

Yes, I have Rock Band on the 360 too. Most of the games I've bought on the PS3 are 720p and not 1080p. To be honest though, 720p isn't really a bad thing for Rock Band, because the enjoyment of the game is more in the music and "playing" the music. It's games where you would really like the best possible picture, but are only 720p that are the big let down.

i have a 19 widescreen dell computer monitor for my 360 imo rockband looks better then what ive seen in 1080p the monitor itself is 1440x900 which the 360 doesnt support so i choose 1360x768 which is exactly 720p

720p is 1280x720
1080p is 1920x1080
1080i is 1920x540 with alternating horizontal lines of resolution interlaced to make it appear like 1920x1080

You must be using a ps3, but I thought they addressed this issue? Either way, it's not really Harmonix fault.
The 360 has no such issues. If you set your console to 1080i everything gets converted to 1080i, regardless of the original content. I speak from experience as my previous set would not play 720p, but my 360 was set to 1080i and I never had any issues playing anything.

I believe the PS3 will change to 720p (when you start a game that is 720p) even if you have the output set to 1080p in the setup menu.
The fact that the PS3 verson is on a Blu-Ray disc makes no difference at all. 1080p from the 360 should and will look better on a 1080p screen, when set up correctly.
rock band is already 1080p. look on the back of the case. it is not however 1080p on the ps3 version though.

I have quoted this post hoping that it will help draw attention to it. it surprises me that people STILL dont know this...
in case you cannot understand the quoted post, i will restate the above information:
the ps3 DOES NOT SCALE games for you. if you have an older hdtv, youre just out of luck. also, BLU_RAY DOES NOT AFFECT VIDEO GAME GRAPHICS, it simply allows for more storage space.
thank you for your time.

I appreciate all the help but I think we are going in the wrong direction. My TV is neither 1080p nor 720p capable. 480i and 1080i is all the TV can do. My question to harmonix was, were they going to make future versions of Rock Band i.e. Rock Band 2 (said with fingers crossed:rolleyes:) compatible with 1080i or am I going to have to spend another four grand to replace my current TV if I want to see it in high def. I know the game can be "stretched” to fit a 16:9 format and I have done this but it is still not high def.

I would be replacing a 73 inch Mitsubishi Diamond. The replacement is a Mitsubishi WD-73833 Wife doesn't want a smaller set so there ya go. Amazon has them for 3000.00 and then tack on shipping. So, I guess it is not quite 4000 but not sure if I want to buy a TV over the internet.
This is what I have and I don't think anyone would trade for a smaller screen. Especially come football season.

LOL, even my top o' the line samsung 1080p set was only 2399.00 for 46 inches of pure television glory.
as has been previously stated, if your older hdtv is 1080i only (as was my old one) youre just plain out of luck for now... what harmonix has in your future for rb2 is WAY up in the air...
youre better off hoping one day sony gets off its butt and adds the features that xbox 360 has had for years now... like upscaling. rockband only runs in a native 720p on xbox 360 too, but the 360 is capable of scaling.
i used to complain about the same crap when i first got my ps3 and was VERY disappointed to learn i could only play resistance and other early games at 480p...

I recently picked up a 65" mits 1080p everything, for 1499, they had the 73" for 1699 (hhgregg). The picture quality is pretty amazing, especially compared to my previous set which was comparable to what you have now. Not to mention being tiny compared to those huge cabinets of old.
So there, your reasons for not upgrading are whittled down to practically nothing, you go now!

No, you don't have to drop 4 grand on a new TV. At worst, you'll need to spend $299 on an XBox 360, which will automatically scale all of its games to 1080i if you tell it to in the system settings.

Yes, this is a pretty good point but, 299.00 won't give me big enough hard drive so have to go with bigger one so the way I got it figured 449.00 for xbox, 170.00 for new Rock Band, 60.00 to get wireless guitar (have to have it), and 200.00 to replace all my DLC, plus 100.00 to put in wireless modem. All total, another 979.00 dollars for ONE game. Can you say divorce:eek:?

You could get an external scaler like this:
http://www.lumagen.com/testindex.php?module=dvi_details
Or a new AV receiver that is capable of upscaling (probably cheaper).
(Both of these suggestions assume your TV has an HDMI or DVI input)

The set was bought early 2004. They didn't know about HDMI or DVI at the time. My amp is new, Pioneer Elite VSX92 and I think it does upscale but have no way to see it. Thanks though.

well its cheaper than the 4 grand..... plus you can get the version with the 20 gig hard drive for 349.99 so you don't need to get the 449.00 version..... so thats only 879.99 for one game instead of 979, or 4 grand, at most that'll only be a trial separation....

Looking at Mitsubishi's product archive, both 73" TVs they released in 2004 had it.

Would YOU pay 879 for ONE game? Better yet would your significant other let you? Before you answer with "no but I'm not complaining about it", realize that neither was I. I was just questioning HMX as to there intentions for future concepts of the game. I could justify buying the TV if push comes to shove but paying almost a grand just to play Rock Band just isn't feasible.

okay, i thought with the trial separation thing in the end you would realize i was kidding around but im guessing it didnt work.... i know its a bunch and agree, its weird though to ask about hmx's intentions in the future when it does exist in the present, as why so many point out the 360 issue. also i find it kind of rare that anyone buys a system for and only in its lifetime uses a system for one game. yeah it may be what pushes someone to get a system but the percetnage that retains only 1 game and wont pick up as an example mgs4 for the ps3 or gears of war on the 360 is incredibly low....so its not quite a true argument in reality. but again i was joking.....and actually my gf tends to support most things i do, if I express a deep desire for it, granted when she supported me through some terrible ideas of mine that failed miserably i wish she would have just slapped me and said your dumb, but in the end her support of the things I care about (like painting one of my rooms in tampa bay pewter!) is part of why i love her.....

Yes, I figured it was a joke but I'm tired (LOL), kind of took it the wrong way, sorry. But the ps3 I bought for rock band after originally buying for the ps2 (what a mistake), so I have 6 or 7 ps2 games but I never play them anymore.
The biggest reason I chose the ps3 over Xbox was the blu ray player.
I was hoping someone at HMX would slip up and give out info they shouldn't. Wishful thinking, I know.

In this situation I would suggest buying a 2nd hand iScan VP30. You'll get it quite cheap as there is now a VP50 and a VP50+. The last one I saw sell in the UK went for about £400. So you may get one for about $300. It would be a wise investment, as it will take any resolution from 480i to 1080p and convert it to 1080i. Even if you only use it for the PS3 it will be worth it. It's your cheapest option anyway.

I have the WD-65734 and it was a sale at HHgregg. They were several hundred dollars cheaper than anywhere else I found, even online. It was the Medallion series, not the Diamond. Very little difference between them. If you keep your eyes open, you'll find them on sale again I'm sure. You'll be looking for the 73734. JVC also has 70" LCOS sets that are very nice and priced well (about 2299 for the 70" if I remember correctly). That's what I was going to get originally, as I'm not a huge DLP fan, but the deal was too good to pass up.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead because I have the same issue with Rock Band 2. My 40GB PS3 right now is only outputting 480p to my 1080i set. Yes, my TV is about 5 years old, but none of the other games I have for the PS3 that offer 720p output fail to be scaled up to 1080i. They all look great, except for Rock Band 2.
I've checked settings, and its only RB2 that's failing to display in glorious HD. Its been six months since this thread was touched - anybody have any comments?

I feel your pain. It sucks when technology doesn't perform common sense tasks. I doubt HMX will address this issue, unless the issue is affecting a good percentage of their customers, which I doubt (money greases the squeaky wheel). It seems like your best solution, aside from purchasing a new TV, is getting a scaler to fix your issue.
Off topic - in a previous post someone mentioned 720p being superior to 1080i. For those of you that watch NFL football, just go look at the difference between FOX and CBS (FOX = 720p, CBS = 1080i). Unless FOX uses inferior cameras, I'll stick with 1080i.
wickedbadz
12-25-2008, 09:13 PM
Simple solution to this issue is buy a native 1080p console. The xbox360 is native 1080p, ps3 is not. Sorry fanboys but it's been known since the ps3 was designed it was upscaling not native to the 1080 resolutions.
As far as people saying 720p is better than 1080i, you need either a new TV or glasses because 1080i blow 720p out the water in every aspect, stating something like that is like comparing a Nintendo DS display to a 52" LCD
