With that out of the way, Ill give my two-bits.
Guitar Hero- This game was named Guitar Hero for a reason. The idea was to allow gamers the thrill of playing highly technical guitar tracks, as well as Bass/Rythem tracks with GH2. These games consisted of MOSTLY Rock Songs, from a wide array of Artists, mostly being covers by another band. At the release of Guitar Hero, it was largly unaccepted by gamers in general. It took time for the concept to catch on.
Rock Band - This game is in development to allow gamers the thrill of playing in a Rock Band. Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals. This game already has a large following due the gradually building success of the Guitar Hero series.
The song selection for Rock Band by the devs isnt going to be anything like their method of choosing songs for GH. In the GH series they didnt use the most popular song from every artist featured, they chose based on the adaptability of the Guitar track to the games mechanisms, and the complexity of, and technique required to perfom, the song. Harmonix has partnered with MTV, EMI, Hollywood Records, Sony BMG, Universal Music, and Rhino Entertainment(Warner Music Group), in order to access the entire library of said record label's catalogs of songs for all of their artists. Oh and thats WITH access to master recordings.
"Our vision for Rock Band is to completely change the way people interact with and enjoy the music they love," said Jeff Yapp, EVP, MTV Program Enterprises. "By joining forces with EA and the music industry's largest record labels and publishers, we are striving to create a groundbreaking new platform that allows people to connect with their favorite music and artists in ways they never have before."*1
This says to me that instead of having just the few great songs of the broad genre of Rock, that they intend to use the vastness of these record labels and publishers as a resource to tap, allowing us to connect(downloadable content maybe) to our(the gamers) favorite music/artists. Everybody has a favorite and most are different. So Im really thinking that the end users won't all be playing the same songs over and over, but will be able to search for and download a personal favorite from an ever growing array of artists from multiple genres.
If this is the way it turns out, then everyone WILL be happy, however its probably the ONLY way the majority of fans will be satisfied.
I can't wait to download the entire catalog of Black Sabbath. OMG
The whole reason for letting people submit song suggestions is so they know what to include on disk, and where to start for the downloadable content.
