I know there are a number of you who love - or at least like - your PS3, and are happy you made that choice.
I really, really want to find a reason to want a PS3, but I just can't justify spending the money on it. I really just want to own the hardware. I did the same thing with the Wii; I bought it to have it, and have no games I want to play for it.
Will some of you PS3 owners PLEASE post some reasons and help me rationalize this purchase. I even called the kid at the store and he couldn't help me find a reason either.
I don't know much about the PS3 game lineup and I'm looking for good game suggestions. The only one I've heard positive about is Resistance. I like all game genres, but I mainly like FPS and RPG.
I own a 360 and an HD-DVD player.
Please keep this a no-flame thread.
I'm depending on you to help me spend money and keep the economy flowing...

Ok, I am a PS3 owner and not a fanboy by any means. I researched before I made my decision. Here are some factors I took into consideration.
Blu-ray. Even though you have an HD-DVD player at this moment Blu-Ray is the format ahead judging by every store I go to there is at least triple the space set up for blu-ray if the place isn't already blu-ray exclusive. I.e. Blockbuster.
As far as games go the library is going to start expanding this month with Haze and Uncharted which are exclusives to the PS3. Haze is a FPS and has 4 player co-op. Unreal Tournament 3 which was going to be a timed exclusive is rumored to be pushed back so I'm not sure on that one.
As far as games that are out now are Warhawk and Heavenly Sword. Some people enjoy Lair which was a game that received too much hype and some various sports games look amazing on the system if you have it hooked up to a hd-tv.
Everyone is looking forward to Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4. These will be 2 reasons to buy the console but they won't come out until February and March respectively. None of these games are going to be a "halo killer" as some people like to tab games because nothing is going to kill a flagship game of a multi-billion dollar corporation.
It does have free online so that won't cost you anymore money since I presume you are already paying for Live. If you hate wires it also has wi-fi.
And lastly and most importantly, you could add me as a PS3 friend. How awesome is that?

I have a buddy who bought one because of the PS brand and blu-ray feature. He is regretting it due to lack of games and fun game support. I have played it at his house and it's ok...but not as immediately multi-user friendly as my xbox, he is getting an xbox soon after playing it at my home.
Also the blue-ray is loosing to the hd-dvd in the news. more studios are going strictly hd dvd than vice versa.

One of the best things about the PS3 is reliability, this console won't let you down, I speak of my own experience and many other peoples comments about it.
As far as games, jq has mentioned a few very good exclusives in the near future, adding Little big planet and FF13.
but you could also try these great titles already out:
Warhawk--- this is a definite must buy.
Heavenly Sword
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Ratched and Clank future--coming out next week.
add to these all the other non exclusives like CoD 4, assasins creed, RB (of course) and many others, and believe me the real problem would be having enough cash to get them all hahaha!!:p
As for the price there's the 399.00 40GB model, drawbacks for this model would be no backwards compatibility with PS2 games and 2 less USB ports.

This article begs to differ. Sorry I had to copy/paste it. The link wouldn't work.
Also with blu-ray having Spiderman, Shrek, and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. They should receive a huge holiday boost with hd-dvd having only Transformers.
According to a market research company Nielsen VideoScan, as of week ended October 14, 2007, weekly US sales of Blu-ray discs were ahead of HD DVD with 71% of the market. In 2007 US sales, Blu-ray leads with 66% of the market. Since inception, US market share was 61% for Blu-ray and 39% for HD DVD.[33][34] The 2007 sales numbers are in contrast with much of 2006 (before the release of the PlayStation 3) when HD DVD had the lead.
In Europe, a study by Gfk revealed that Blu-ray lead with 70% of titles sold with 650,000 titles for Blu-ray and 332,000 titles for HD DVD.[35]
In Japan, according to Nikkei, the sales figure as of October 2007 is approximately 9:1 in favor of Blu-ray Disc. [36]
Movies on high definition discs are commonly priced above their standard DVD counterparts. Movies in Blu-ray and HD DVD formats tend to cost about the same, the average MSRP of a HD DVD title is $34.18,[37] while the average MSRP of a Blu-Ray title is $35.17 [38]

The guy at GameStop said if I get the 60GB model, it supports PS2 games better than the 80GB model because that one uses an emulator instead of hardware. Is that true?
Does the PS3 come with a Component or HDMI cable? Or do I have to buy that again?
Is there a memory card option? Can I load my PS1/PS2 mem cards? Is there a PS3 mem card?

It comes with componet cables, you have purchase the HDMI cable separatly.
as for the memory option, nope you need and adapter for that I think.
Can't really tell much about your first question. All I can say is that my 60GB model supports PS2 games just fine.

i believe that the 80GB is coming out by christmas and that will be $499 and there should be some 60GB left at that time, so i imagine that they would drop that price to 449. (both of these are backwards compatible)
As far as games go, it should be relatively caught up to the 360 by Q1 2008. IMO
and like LZ said not many (if any) have reliability issues with the PS3.
the compatibilty with the 80GB is reduced because of the emulator but there are only a small number of games that you can't play on it. they have made some of these games compatiple through system updates and will probably continue to do so.

Ohh! I forgot about something else, Home!! I think it was you FallenAce that mentioned that you are very sociable when it comes to videogames, well you won't get more sociable than Home. It looks very promising, the beta will launch for all PSN users this november according with some SCEA big shot (I forget his name).

I have been a staunch supporter of Sony's consoles up until this generation, but the PS3 has failed to win me over, so far. The reason is simply that it doesn't have the games. I know the hardware is supposed to be good, but so far Sony's third console has little to show for it, which is a shame.
Conventional wisdom tells us that most consumers don't care about the hardware (and they shouldn't care too deeply about it, because in the end, the quality of a game depends on the developer and the strength of the gameplay itself). Furthermore, it's a known fact that the console with the biggest game library has, up until this point, always been the winner.
And that's where the PS3's problem lies: Its game library, while decent, still doesn't have any exclusive title that says "See this console? You need to buy this console, or be forever branded by your friends and relatives as rustic and uncool". You see what I'm saying?
MGS4 is one game that I'm really anticipating, and after the brilliant Snake Eater, it is pretty much worth buying a PS3 for almost by itself. However, what the PS3 needs most right now is a few more exclusives of that caliber in order to establish itself as an absolute must-buy.

There are some people that say, (and by some people I mean from the gaming industry) that KillZone 2 will be one of those exclusives you mentioned that could very well tip the scales in the PS3 favor, so far from what I have seen and read yeah, it certanly looks awsome and a definte buy, but I guess will find out this next year. :)

Whats great about the PS3 is you can use the existing cables from your PS2. Provided you have one. And you can get an extra component to transfer your memory card data to an internal memory card option for PS/PS2 games!

If you're really stuggling that much to find reasons to buy one, why not just wait until next year? The price will continue to decline and the gaming library will continue to grow. Save that money for a rainy day.

I own a Ps3 i had one for 5 Months i love it , i suggest getting a 60gb before there arent anymore since they can play Ps2 games. Psn its reliable lagg free unless you have a ****ty ISP , Ps Store isnt the best but lately More demos and Game Add-ons have been added making it awesome , once in a while we get small games like LoccoRocco , Everyday Shooter and some more. There are Classic Ps1 games too :D there are videos trailers and music (1 track from Lair)About the games we dont have many this year but looking into 2008 we will see some really good games , Ps3 has Blu-Ray wich is great , supports MPG MPEG MP4 AVC , MP3 WMA ACC. But the best thing is its FREE , Oh yeah and has a Web Browser wich is great if you're on the forums a lot.

Ok so I went to GameSpot and looked up all PS3 games to create a list of games I would want. Can you guys tell me what you think of them if you've played them?
Folklore
Ninja Gaiden
Resistance
Warhawk
Heavenly Sword
SOCOM - I know it's not out. SOCOM is awesome tho...
Especially please let me know if it's 2 player or more co-op and if you can co-op online. My absolute favorite games are online co-op.

Heavenly Sword
SOCOM - I know it's not out. SOCOM is awesome tho...
Folklore - Never played. The demo was ok, but outside a few games I'm not much into the RPG Genre
Ninja Gaiden - Visually it is an amazing game. I rented it and didn't get anywhere near the end of the game. It will definately keep you occupied for a long time and would be and awesome value if you want to pick it up used.
Resistance - Probably the a consensus pick for best PS3 game to date. A good storyline for a FPS has some interesting weapons and with co-op, a very good online system, and different difficulty levels it gives the game a lot of replay value. Alien species invades during the WWII era? Thats an outstanding premise.
Heavenly Sword. - The best looking game on the PS3. Has a good story line and makes good use of the Sixaxis controls. The downside is that it is too short maybe about 6 hours or so. The last hour though is absolutely epic and a top three ending to any game I've ever played.
Warhawk - The funnest game on the PS3. A multiplayer only game which is why it can be bought for 40 dollars though the PSN store or 60 dollars retail with a Bluetooth headset. People can sign under your name if you have them over as guests and it just makes this game a blast to play. Graphically it's nothing thats mindblowing, but the gameplay is outstanding.
SOCOM - You know what? I've never played a SOCOM game. I just realized how lame that makes me sound.
Hope that helps. Any other questions just post 'em :D

Folklore = A pretty good game, I rented it last week and beat it.
Ninja Gaiden = Great, if you've never played Ninja Gaiden or NGB, this is a must own
Resistance = Again, great. I don't own this one, but it sure is fun. There a little too many solo missions for my taste; but it is still very good.
Warhawk = Awsome online game, I would suggest buying this one. I don't own it my self (watching my cash), but it's worth the buy; especially if you don't own a bluetooth headset.
Heavenly Sword = Production values through the roof, but this game ends up being very short. Worth a rent for sure.
Ratchet and Clank is out today, and I'm sure that will be just as sweet as all the others in the series.

No matter what system a multi-platform game is better on you'll be covered
Can put in your own hard drive
You can create a virtual memory card for your PS2 stuff but need the thing to transfer the saves over from a PS2 memory card.

Here we go:
I struggled with the decision between a 360 Elite and a 60gig PS3 for a good couple of months. I'm a big, big all-around gamer. I play a number of shooters on my PC, use my Wii as a party system, have both the PSP and DS for portable gaming, and owned all three consoles at or around launch this past generation. I can honestly say I have very little bias when it comes to consoles (if anything, I'd lean toward being a Nintendo fanboy).
I'll list off the major pros and cons that I mulled over for the better past of this past summer:
Freedom: I love Sony's approach to the PS3's accessories. You can use a variety of third party flash cards to store and transfer data between systems. Chances are your digital camera memory stick can be used in the PS3. The 360 requires you to buy a proprietary memory card (with very limited space), or to lug around your detachable hard drive.
You can also use any Blutooth device with your system. The hands-free headset I bought for my cell phone works perfectly as an absulutely wireless headset, and I didn't have to pay an extra penny for it. There are also a number of Bluetooth mice, keyboards and other peripherals out there that you can use. Sony doesn't require any proprietary accessories (even down to the generic USB cables to recharge the SIXAXIS, which you no doubt already have several of).
You can upgrade your own hard drive without purchasing an over-priced proprietary drive. Any notebook HDD can be placed in your PS3 without voiding the warranty.
These may each seem like small bonuses, but I really like Son'y mindset when it comes to not forcing its customers to buy overpriced proprietary accessories.
Potential: This was the BIG one. The Cell processor. Blueray discs. This system won't reach its potential for half a decade, and that is a great thing for developers and consumers. The new architecture of the Cell is challenging for developers to take on, but as evidenced by MGS4, Haze, Uncharted and Killzone 2, among other titles, it is well worth learning the new architecture. As great as the games above look right now, there will be a huge jump both visually and technologically between these early titles and the games that release in the system's prime.
On the other hand, the 360 is more developer-friendly and attracts more titles. But the system is already running into glass celings. Several developers have complained about the storage limitations of the 360's DVD9 disc format. PGR had to scrap the ability to race on each track during the day, sunset and night. Sure, for genres like RPGs and Adventure games having 4-6 discs is no big deal, and has been the norm since the original Playstation. But how can a game as vast as GTA4 cram itself onto a single DVD without harming the final product?
To be fair, the PS3 has had its share of complaints from developers about the difficulty of coding for the Cell. Learning a new architecture can be overcome, but no amount of willpower or money can make a DVD9 hold more information.
Also, every PS3 out there has a built-in hard drive. This allows developers to create games with the HDD in mind. Many games rip data from the disc to the HDD to allow for faster load times. This cannot be done on the 360 because a large part of the install base does not own a hard drive, and Microsoft does not want to alienate its customers who went the bargain route.
Reliability: I've got to mention it. The PS3's defective rate is hovering around 0.5%. Microsoft won't give out any numbers, but there are estimates that as many as 25-35% of 360 systems fail at some point. Microsoft's extension of the RRoD coverage to 3 years helps, but nothing can make up for faulty hardware. The purchase of ANY next-gen system is a serious investment. I enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that I can play Rock Band 8 hours a day every week and not run a serious risk of my system overheating.
Cost: This is an obvious con for the PS3, right? Wrong. I live in an eight-bedroom college house. WiFi is the only practical way to network (several desktops, many more laptops). Jus to have the ability to log on to the 'net and download new firmware, it would cost me $550 (system plus $99 Wifi dongle) for a 360 Elite as compared to my $499 60 gig PS3. The online service is completely free, and there is no such thing as a "Play and charge kit". In general though, the PS3 is a slightly larger investment, but you certainly get what you pay for (WiFi, hi-def movie player, hard drive, etc).
Game library: Another clear win for the 360, right? Wrong again, in my eyes. I'm not the type to buy a new game every week. I buy AAA titles that I truely enjoy and can play over and over again. There's no arguing that the 360 has a large library of games, but there are only two "exclusives" out there that I would buy for the 360 (Bioshock and Gears of War). I own both of those games on my PC (mouse and keyboard > controller). If I were a Halo fan (which I am NOT) I could wait a year or so and pick that up for PC.
MGS4, Haze, Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet (which just may be the next big videogame crazy this coming spring) outweigh any exclusives on the 360. And most of the quality third party games (CoD4, GTA4, DMC4, RE5, RB) are releasing on both systems.
Also, I'd expect once developers get a grasp of the PS3's hardware and stop sloppily porting over 360 titles the PS3 versions of multi-platform games will look superior (much like Xbox games began to look better than their PS2 counterparts).
So there you have it. My PS3 was an investment. There are several AAA games releasing in the next six months, the system was actually cheaper for me, it's far more reliable, offers me much more freedom, has the exclusives I want and has the potential to be heads and shoulders better than the 360. I hope this helps with your decision making :)

As mentioned earlier, you'll love Haze when it releases next month. It's from the team that created Goldeneye and Perfect Dark" on the N64, and more recently the TimeSplitters series.
They're one of the best console FPS dev teams out there and the PS3 exclusive will feature up to 4-player online co-op. =]

OH SHI- !
Unfortunately, FallenAce already owns a 360, so most of my points aren't really valid for him. If he's already sunk $400ish dollars into one next-gen system, the only real reason to invest in a second is its exclusive titles.
If worst comes to worst, and somehow the PS3 becomes the new Dreamcast, I'll pick up a 360 on the cheaps next fall. I have faith in Sony. They dethroned Nintendo in the mid 90s.
Despite the widespread negative attention from many online posters (who constitute a very small percentage of the gaming industry, by the way) I believe Sony's strategy of waiting to release their system, rather than rushing to beat Microsoft to the punch, will be a wise one.

Another reason (besides all the other ones given), the PS3 just recently (if not a week, literally days ago) got another $100 price drop. Not sure if that includes 60GB, but I know for sure the 80GB was put down to $500. But if the 60GB versions play PS2 titles better, I'm now glad I own the 60GB. PS3 all in all is a very good buy from my point of view, I just need the good games for it. All I can tell you is that Warhawk's crazy fun, and Oblivion is crack (if you're into that kinda game). DiRT's fun, but it got kinda repetitive, so I got bored with it.

Yea, I still don't understand the whole "PS3 has no games!"
Resistance and Ninja Gaiden are pretty fun...
Other PS3 Games I'd recommend:
Oblivion GOTY Edition (has Shivering Isles expansion)
Lair (rent it first, the control system just doesn't work for some)
MotorStorm (it's pretty fun and there are some add ons for it on PSN)
And then of course everyone should take a look at Uncharted.

The PS3 was release a year to early, with really no games. This holiday seasone will be the first time the PS3 will see any games that are really worth buying.Still the PS3 library will be small but getting bigger and better.
The PS3 has dropped in price from what it was a year ago.
Give the PS3 another year or 2 and that is when your going to start to see what the PS3 is capable of.Third party DEVS are still learning the system .

Well there's 90 for the Wii so maybe that's why. I'll do some investigating.
55 Wii games have under a 7 average and only 9 an 8+,to my suprise Ninja Bread Man isn't one of them, really how can that go wrong?
71 total for PS3,21 under a 7 average and 27 with an 8+.
360 has 75 games with 8+ and 124 under 7.
This is going by gamerankings and games with at least 5 reviews (so the newest will be included as well) also not really sure how many the 360 has since it only goes to 200.

My beliefs on either console are well known, for I admit I can be fanboyish about my bundle of joy (360).
But, I must remind you, that the format war is utterly pointless. By the time DVD is shunned out of the way it'll all be coming electronically. most probably through streaming it rather than straight download (i.e. you can access it whenever you want). We've seen this in the UK with the new BT Vision box, which will become HDMI compatible next year, where you simply "rent" a film for 24 hours. The 360 will support it.
Blu Ray vs HD-DVD? INTERNET... WINNER!

Thanks, all. I can't remember if I said this already, but I think what I'm after is selling myself on buying another machine. I just really like to own the hardware, so NOT owning it is starting to really drive me crazy.
I'd definitely go for the 60GB model, from what I've heard about bc.
How many of you guys HAVE Warhawk? I imagine you want a big group of people for that game.
Also, if I use a headset, does it HAVE to be Bluetooth? Can I use a standard cellphone headset anywhere?
IbanezBassist_v2

No. It can be a USB Headset. But BT is so nice. Getting the retail version of Warhawk includes the Jabra headset. Which is like a 50 dollar value. You can DL WH off the PS store for 40 but the extra 20 for the headset makes it worth it.
You can use the headset anywhere.

I'd have to politely disagree. Digital distribution of movies won't be mainstream for another decade-ish. Bluray or HD-DVD will most likely be the last popular video disc format.
Look at newspapers and magazines. They've been a wasteful, expensive and outdated source for news for a decade now, but people still buy them. Many consumers, particularly older people, still want to take their sunday paper on the crapper, or take their Sports Illustrated to work and toss it on the break room table for their co-workers to flip through.
The same can be said for movies. If I've got a streaming digital distribution center in my living room, what happens if I want to watch Spaceballs in my room before falling asleep? Or on my computer? Or in my car? Or bring it to a friend's house?
My point is, even though digital distribution makes sense from a practical and financial standpoint, it will take a great deal of time to ween mainstream consumers off of their hard copy formats, so the Blueray/HD-DVD debate is quite valid, especially with the recent HDTV surge.

How many of you guys HAVE Warhawk? I imagine you want a big group of people for that game.
Also, if I use a headset, does it HAVE to be Bluetooth? Can I use a standard cellphone headset anywhere?
I have Warhawk, and it has literally hooked me more than any other game I've touched in recent memory; the gameplay is that solid. Like, I had to leave the Orange Box to go play more Warhawk, it was that bad. I've played almost all the PC Battlefields, and they don't hold a candle to this game.
With the headset, as said before, I'm pretty sure the PS3 supports USB headsets (I'm pretty sure that's not cellphone-standard), but the Warhawk $60 version comes with a Bluetooth headset which I thought was totally worth the money.

Hahaha. Yeah that is, but at least he wanted to input some positive info. Think of it more as <B>reinforcing</B> what you said.
The cellphone standard is the 3/32" 2-ring jack... like a headphone jack, but smaller. You use them on Xbox v1 and 360 as well. I didn't remember seeing a place to plug those in on the SIXAXIS, so I wanted to know with certainty.
Two questions:
1. Where is a good place to go to have SIXAXIS explained to me?
2. Can I plug in my PS2 controllers? What if I wanna play GH 80's on my PS3? I don't have a PS3 guitar.

1. What do you want to know. Give me some details.
2. Yes, with an adapter. No adapter, no PS2 controller. Pelican makes a PS3 to PS2 adapter specifically for GH, but I've heard some iffy things about it. Such as the SP not being able to deploy, lag, and some other issues. I've myself not bought one so I can't personally give you a review. But it does have a selector switch for the PS2 controller or the SG.

I don't know really anything about the SIXAXIS. What makes it different/worse/better than a standard 4-Axis or analog controller?
There are USB ports, right? I have a PS2-to-PC USB adapter. Would that work?

To tell you the truht the sixaxis is more often that not, more trouble that it is worth. The only game I have really enjoyed using it is in Heavenly Sword. basically it's a montion sensor where you tilt, shake or do whatever is it requiered in the game, you can even use it as a steering wheel in some racing games. But like I said most of the time its just to hard or awkward to control.
As for your other question it should work in theory.

2. Can I plug in my PS2 controllers? What if I wanna play GH 80's on my PS3? I don't have a PS3 guitar.
I purchased a PS2 adapter for my PS3. (Made by Pelican) (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product_id=802566) They claim that it works for Guitar Hero. If you are playing GH1, everything is perfect. Unfortunately, there is a difference between GH1 and GH2. Moving around in the menus is very difficult, to activate Star Power you need to push the select key, and Hammer-On/Pull-Off doesn't work. You have to strum each note. I have yet to try it on the 80's version, but since it is esseentially an expansion to GH2, I would assume it is the same.
PS2 controllers work great, especially if you miss the rumble feature.

I don't have a PS2-to-PC adapter, but I have used my Pelican one to plug in a PS2 controller to my PC. I would assume that you can use it to plug in a PS2 controller to your PS3, as well as use it for GH1. You have to change the Pelican one slightly to play GH2, though, and I doubt yours has the ability (even though GH2 sucks w/o HOPO.)

Yeah I have 2 after-market GH controllers. I wonder if I can use those for rb if I got that on PS3 instead of 360.
Also, I always wondered why you guys talk about HO/PO so much and I had no idea how to do it. I guess it's because... I can't!

So I was in Meijer (like Walmart or Super Target) and I found one PS3 60GB for 449.99. It took me a half an hour of staring at that before I left the store, emptyhanded.
If I buy it at GameStop, I can get one extra game, but not Warhawk.
If I buy it at Walmart, I can get Warhawk, but no Walmarts near me have the 60GB model.
If I buy it at Meijer, it's $50 less, but comes with no free $60 game.
What do I do???

I'd definitely cross off Walmart because you don't want to have to settle for the 40 GB version or overspend for the 80 GB version if you don't want to.
Id go with Meijer. Basically you'd be paying $510 for the game and Warhawk with a guarantee of a 60 GB and Warhawk.
Gamestop would be the second best choice because if you want to puchase Warhawk you add it on top for about $560 and you could pick up a FPS co-op game like Resistance as the free game. But I've seen Resistance for as low as $30 at some stores.

I'd go for Meijer, it's probably the last chance you will be able to get a 60GB version, Sony did say that they where just waiting for the 60GB model stock to run out(the reason you can't find it at GS or Walmart) and then just concentrate on the 80GB and 40GB models.

1. Buy the 60gigger at Meijer for $449.
2. Download Warhark for $40.
3. Profit
Or get the $60 version with the headset. Your choice. If backward compatibility is really important to you, the 60gig is the best way to go.

Yeah, just reinforcing that.
I don't know really anything about the SIXAXIS. What makes it different/worse/better than a standard 4-Axis or analog controller?
I've only used the SIXAXIS motion controls for three things:
Super Rub-A-Dub demo,
Skate. demo,
Warhawk.
It's alright to use with Super Rub-A-Dub, but the controls for me don't feel tight enough (probably because you're dealing with navigating a rubber duck through a tub of water).
As for Skate, you can use the motion controls to give you a little extra precision in turns. I've found this really useful.
Warhawk is where the motion controls shine though. I've hooked them up, and found the right sensitivity, and I have become a much better player because of it. The controls make sense, and are incredibly precise. Not only that but it frees up your left stick to move the targeting reticle around so you can make quick shots that are normally out of range. This gives you a massive advantage. I honestly can't imagine Warhawk without the motion controls anymore.
So yeah, when it works, it seems to provide a very nice benefit.

I believe they're starting to sell a version of Warhawk without the headset in stores for $40 as well. I would recommend this option since the download only works for one account (if other people have a login on your PS3, they can't play it).

The actual patch is expected out before the end of the month.
