View Full Version : I think GHIII has lost sight of what made the game so great.

Boss Battles against Slash and co.? Master Tracks? Carmen Electra doing promos?
I think that GHIII has forgotten what made the series so great to begin with. Guitar Hero was about the experience of being onstage, playing the songs by these legendary guitarists, making them idols. The fact that the songs were not sung by the original artist added to the effect that were just a cover band. You were playing these covers of songs by these great bands, and the original GH was a tribute to them. GHII furthered that.
But with this, I think it was a huge mistake in making these legendary guitarists bosses, ones that you have to defeat. It kind of takes away from what the game was about: a tribute to rock and roll.
Granted, it's cool that the series has come so far that it actually has the budget to get the master tracks. Rock Band, I don't mind so much, since you are actually singing over the original recording and still feels like a tribute to rock. And, for sure, I'm still getting GHIII, but I kind of wish they had just stuck to the series' roots. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but that's my two cents.

Agreed. They're trying to pander to the hardcore crowd, which is probably 5% of the people that enjoy Guitar Hero, and they're doing it at the expense of what made the game so fun in the first place. Their selection of "bosses" is also laughable.

I'm as disappointed with GH3 as the next person, but you say its pandering to the hardcore crowd? I'm in the hardcore crowd, the ones who want MORE difficulty, and it certainly doesnt give me that. GH3 just needed to be GH2 + better graphics + more songs. That was it. But oh no, Neversoft **** it up. Well done. The graphics end up looking ok but with terrible charachters and the song charts are rubbish. Daaaaamn. I'll get it when its my bargain bucket XD

What you guys are saying is ridiculous... the game should have just been the exact same with better graphics?? Just with new songs? That would suck... Neversoft had to start from scratch and they went out on a limb and included some things that are fresh and completely original for the sake of keeping the game fresh and you bash them and the worst part is the game isn't even out yet!? If you don't like the battle mode don't play it.... there are only three bosses no big deal and does it really matter about the graphics?? The fretboard and notes is all that counts.... At least give them and chance and play the damn game first (not just the demo) and if it isn't as fun or even more fun than the past few GH's then you can bash it all you want for letting you down.....

It's a rythym game, the demo pretty much shows you all you need to know. I still plan on buying it, and enjoying it, but it's not nearly as tight as GHII was. And yes, actually I would have been happy with nothing more than GHII with new songs and online play. For innovation there's Rock Band.

sure, ho/po's are easier.. but good luck with some of the songs. most are not too difficult, sure, but uh, this game definitely has the hardest songs so far.

What exactly is wrong with Master Tracks?

That's one of the comparisons between RB and GH, how many master tracks there are. I agree that master tracks aren't the be all end all becuase, as you said, it's supposed to be a cover band. But they also don't offend me either.

doesn't rock band only have like 3 cover songs??

For hardcore guitar fans, I don't see anything wrong with GH3. I'm just not a hardcore guitar fan; I'm a rock fan who enjoys hanging out and playing games with friends and listening to good music.

Battle: Yes, RB only has about 3 cover songs so far. I think someone said that was 8% of the total songlist as compared to the 50% or so songs in GH that are cover songs.
After playing the GH3 demo on Live and in CompUSA, I can honestly say I was disappointed. The game's still fun, but it lacks the 'wow!' factor that guitar hero 1 had. The visuals are honestly pathetic when compared with RB, also, but I can say that the new Les Paul guitar is freakin' awesome. It's much, much better than the previous guitars they've released. If you wanna test drive the new gear, drop by any game-carrying store - most are demoing GH3 with the new axe.

If you read his posts, you'll find your answer!
But where does it say you're supposed to be a cover band for guitar hero? I never saw that? I much prefer the masters...it's also better for the people watching you play. Not that all the covers were bad, but I'd rather listen to the real thing given the chance!

oh yeah the lame your singing over the recording excuse. oh well he's still a hypocrite since the guitarist/bassist and the drummer have to play the master tracks anyway

K, seriously...you people are stupid.
A cover track and a master don't make one bit of ****ing difference in how the game plays. Plus, in half the songs you can't hear anything except the guitar anyway. Get the **** over it and play Rock Band and GH2 if you don't like the new one. Jesus tittie ****ing Christ.

Makes a bid difference in how it SOUNDS though... op wants more covers to feel like he's in a cover band...cool. I want a master track to pretend I'm Slash. Not covering his music...everyone has their opinion though, so that's cool.
Relax, dude.

Oh my, we certainly got a brilliant person right here. Using clever arguments like "omg stop wining", and "stop bicting u pusy". He's smart, but you can tell he's all business because of his (censored) curses. This is certainly an intellectual to be reckoned with. I wouldn't try arguing with him, lest he overwhelm you with his quick wit, and profound arguments.

K, seriously... take a typing class.
I understand it makes no difference the way a game plays. I'm saying a prefer the original style of the game; I like having cartoon-ish characters, instead of these normal mapped, ass styled characters we have now. I'm saying I prefer having covers that sound like the original song. It adds to the whole point of Guitar Hero; it's a tribute to rock, and you're playing as a band that's playing tributes to rock.
Of course it plays the same. Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker played the same, but people prefer one style over the other. I'm just stating my opinion.
And Jesus *****-****ing Christ was funny when they used it in Team America. Not when you use it.
Thanks much.

I think GHIII is going to be a great game. The only reason I see that everyone hates it is because Harmonix didnt make it. I thought Neversoft was going to make it **** too, but then I saw the ads and they did 100 times better than what I thought they were going to. GHIII is just going to be as good as the previous guitar heros.

Agreed, after playing it, the only differences I see are the tracklist, the difficulty, battle mode, and the interface. Everything else is pretty much the same.

Okay, before you start stating things matter-of-factly be sure to check your facts. Most people, myself included, despise the game not because of who made it but because of how it turned out. I'm not going to repeat all of my arguements here as I'm tired of reiterating time and time again why I hated the game because somebody takes a blanket statement and applies it to all of the people who don't like GH III.
Let me state this firmly and clearly so that everyone here can read it. I don't hate GHIII because it was developed by Neversoft. The developer has NO bearing on my decision at all. I hate GH III because of the game it is, it is missing a lot that the previous GHs had and is catered to the hardcore player. Boss battles and battle mode in general are stupid ideas. I want to be able to hear the music I am playing not to be constantly listening to beeps and screeches because I can't hit the notes because of some stupid powerup.
Alright.... that's enough of that. I'm not going to go deeper in this thread as I've stated my opinions of this game in many other threads. If you want my full opinion, find one of those other threads. Do NOT tell me that I hate the game just because Harmonix didn't develop it.

No way dude. I mean look at the metal, just watch it without playing. Looks pretty hard... its too forgiving. I mean its great for when me mate comes over and he's only just started expert and ive finished it but its certainly easier. I mean the charts may LOOK difficult but you can really delay the actions and it really is easier than GH2.
I can never do Jordan. Give me Jordan on the GH3 engine and I bet I could. I mean to get 5* on songs above the 4th section expert on GH2 is hard for me, getting 5 star on what looked like some fairly punchy songs was way easy.
So I think you'll find that the CHARTS might be the hardest so far but the forgiving-nature of it isn't. In fact, if HMX made their RB engine less forgiving then maybe my former complaints of RB guitar being too easy may be thrown out the window.

I have to agree, GH III is way too forgiving based on the X360 demo, though I think I read somewhere that Activision has acknowledged this and are going to change the gameplay accordingly. Hammer-ons and pull-offs certainly do seem a lot easier, whereas before missing them would have missed the notes completely.
And yes, I also find Expert on GH II very hard for five-starring songs. In fact, I've only done that on maybe five songs on Expert, possibly more.

I don't really mind the "boss battles" one way or the other. They seem like a neat addition to the game, but I'll reserve final judgement for when it arrives.
I do agree regarding the use of master tracks. The cover tracks used in GH1 and 2 definitely gave the music a "live" feel that is sadly missing whenever a master track is used instead, and that detracts from the experience, IMO.

I especially loved how some songs in guitar hero 80s faded out as opposed to ending.
I'd prefer covers to master tracks, honestly. I'll be turning the vocals down so our singer will be able to hear himself, anyways, and I agree with the OP about covers giving the game more of a live feel. Masters might SOUND better, but covers add to the 'omg I'm in a rock band!' experience.

If you don't like the battle mode don't play it.
Too bad you're forced to and it's the worst thing in any GH game yet. Yes it's even worse than the Killers and AFI. In fact I'd rather have a MCR,Fallout Boy and (insert other trash emo band here) song rather than have to suffer through these piles of crap again. Pretty much entirely luck based, doesn't matter how good you do,you've gotta send out 3 to 5 power ups and hope they fail.
