The linked WSJ article has a quote from Jimmy Pages manager that says (along with some of the article)...
But some bands have resisted the call of the new medium. Led Zeppelin's thundering riffs are among the most sought after by music game makers, but the group's guitarist, Jimmy Page, and his bandmates have repeatedly turned down offers from both Activision and MTV, says Peter Mensch, a partner at Q Prime Management, which manages Mr. Page, along with Metallica and other acts.
The sticking point: The band isn't comfortable with the prospect of granting outsiders access to its master tapes, a necessary step in creating the games. "It ain't about the money," Mr. Mensch says.
I realize this doesn't mean it won't happen, but it doesn't sound real promising either.

I dont understand what the big deal is. If they dont want to do it becuase its a "video game" and they take their music as serious art... thats one (stupid) thing....
BUT to say they dont want to do it cuz HMX will have to access master tracks?!
i just dont get it.

Nice find. I don't see what the problem would be with masters. Are they afraid copies will be made and released on P2P?

I guess some artists are very, very protective of their master tracks. Others (like NIN) release them to the general public for free. I'm assuming they might be worried that if their songs are split up and worked in the game, then someone will find a way to "hack" the game to get a copy of the digital masters. That's the only reason I can think of from the way they phrase it. They shouldn't be worried about letting a game developer have access to copies of the masters though. I think I remember an interview that stated all the master copies used by HMX were locked away in a safe. They know how important it is to protect these things, especially when they know how disappointing it is to want to use a song whose masters have been damaged or lost.

It's possible that one of the masters for Stairway to Heaven has Jimmy Page admitting to murder or something on the end of it.

Actually, I've seen a couple of threads (on other sites) about people who pull the separated masters from the disc and use them.
That said, I'm very disappointed in Jimmy Page.
