View Full Version : The Songs for Rock Band to succeed

It's been awhile since I have posted, simply due to busy work and life schedule. During this time I took some thought into what one poster said about 3 weeks ago "Rock Band needs popular current songs. We can have all the DLC we want later on, but at first RB needs popular songs to snag customers to buy the game" (roughly paraphrased)

This lingered in the back of my head for quite sometime, and I began to listen to the "popular" music that I enjoy very much, but think is nothing in comparison to some of the older rock out there. Currently the music is very heavily rooted in 90's. While this is somewhat smart on RB dev teams part (most consumers who have a slightly larger disposable income who can afford a full $170 should be a bit older/in there later 20's)

Now its time to bring in the younger crowd, the crowd that says "hey mom/dad, for christmas..." Grab bag any of these, its sure to get the young ones in tune to the game

Killers- 'Read my Mind', 'All These Things That I have done', 'Bones'
Interpol - 'Heinrech Manuever', 'Obstacle 1', 'Evil', 'Mammoth'
Fall Out Boy - (I really hate this band, but...) 'This aint a scene...'
Incubus - 'Megalomanic' 'Pardon Me' (actually anything that has been a single from them. ANYTHING will sell)
Arckid - (this one is cheap for licensing) 'I'll stick around'
The Academy is - (ANYTHING FROM THEM. They are extremely good. A single would be wise. Hopefully not We got a big mess on our hands)
The Bravery

And thats all I can think of. I am pretty sure battle axe of doom is going to respond and say how much he advidly disagrees with this choice of music; alas I am simply commenting on an important issue once brought up.

Forum pals, feel free to comment away on what is popular and should be included.

You hit the nail on the head right there. While there are gamers of all ages, the OG gamers who grew up on atari/coleco/nes are all in their mid to late 20s now and they are the bread and butter of game sales. While the under 18 crowd may be bigger, they still have to beg parents/save for months/lie/cheat/steal their way to a game like RB, while the older crowd can pick it up on a whim.

That said, I do understand the need for some songs to hook the kids (like giving away that first crack-rock for free) but they aren't a sure bet like the older gamers. They need to walk a fine line, not so many classics as to alienate the kids, but also not so much pop, modern crap that the music elitists turn up their noses at it. The same can be said for different music genres, not everyone is going to want to scream, and some only want to scream, etc, etc.

All in all, I get what your saying, but I still think the RB set list should lean more toward classic tracks, not exactly 'classic rock', but songs that are timeless. Give Fallout Boy a few years and see if they still stand up, or if they fall into the void of nothingness where Fred Durst is king.

Get rid of Fall Out Boy, and Incubus, and that is actually a good list of modern songs. I've heard bad things of the Killers, but I've never heard them so I won't mention it.

Thankfully someone agrees with me on this point, and I still think some of the songs are a little too much 1990-96. REM's Orange Crush? What the F is this doing in this game? Even IGN.COM has comprised a list of Rock Bands current offering and they say its rock o meter is pretty weak. Oh well, take the good with the bad.

Next I agree with more timeless songs needed. You want timeless, lets just put the whole entire DAZED AND CONFUSED soundtrack in the game! That would triple sales alone, and I'm sure you'll agree. Ahh the days of great rock and roll

And I'm going to go one step further! I dare say that since we outlawed mary jane... Rock just hasn't been the same
This is a huge overstatement on my part, but its in good fun... and atleast 50% true.

You clearly are the biggest douche bag I have ever seen. You have manipulated what I have said and made slanderous commentary. Grow the F*** up.

Btw, REM is not that good. Period.

you're saying RB should just include these songs so they can sell the game better to kids. as i see it, that's stooping down to Fall Out Boy's level. who cares about the product? as long as you can make alot of money, it doesn't matter.

edit: i never said anything about REM

That list is pretty horrid. Incubus, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is, and The Bravery all suck really, really, bad. Just putrid.

I've only heard Interpol, and The Bravery out of the bands on this list I liked. A lot of those are probably bad if they fit the theme of the setlist.

Well everyone who commented, sans A PERFECT TOOL, are proof that some of these people on the forums are idiots. The whole entire point was to point out what was popular and to make suggestions for additional songs. With these songs, you will target ANOTHER market, and even SOMEWHAT satisfy some of the people who have good musical taste (ie: Gray Invisible)

Battle Axe, consider that your taste is in my opinion f***in awful. You like some music/idolize some music that is just s*** for brains in my opinion. With that said, you are not the definitive on music, so wake up. Interpol is popular, ergo they do belong on this list.

Revolver, you... words cant describe whats wrong with you. Thats ok though, just please understand that videogames ARE A BUSINESS. Like every single type of business there are two main types of products. There are those that produce quality, artistic, well thoughout games; and those who produce money making cows. (in movies you can say the SAW movies are money making cows). Of course I know their are PLENTY of different variations of these two types, but these are the spectrums. If you like the art/quality games, cool. No problem. But understand that everyone is out to make money, including RB. The list needs some work. It needs some fresh blood. When you turn 18 and possibly go to college, perhaps you will understand some basic business fundamentals.

Lastly, I hate myself for doing what I complained about... Bashing each other and others musical taste. Sadly, some poeple tend to instigate it. Good day.

Dude chill. Battle Axe speaks. He doesn't censor or beat around the bush for anyone. You either suck it up and take critism or leave.

The real ***** is someone who *****es about *****ing (mistake #1) over the internet (mistake #2).

Chill. You're being a pathetic baby. Like differing taste is hurting you.

Yeah The Killers get alot of bad feedback because they had a big "disagreement" with FOB but they have both made peace with it. I would love to see some of thier better songs make it onto rock band.

Pandering to the crowd is not going to do Harmonix any good. (They've already done that by placing FOB on the official list, by the way).
