View Full Version : Characters sing correct lyrics?

Disclaimer: Apologies if this has been mentioned before, couldn't find any topic about it.
Has it been stated that the in-game lead singer characters in Rock Band will actually mouth the words as the song is played, rather than a continuous loop of their jaws flapping like in past GH games (and GH3 for that matter)?
The reason I ask is because of this:

Watch from 1:03-1:35, during "Maps". It sure looks like the female lead singer is singing along word for word, and it looks friggn amazing. Adds SO much to the presentation.
So is this this new feature/addition well known? Has HMX bragged about it at all? Or is that Maps video just a total fluke?

I believe so, even the drummers and guitarist/bassist play the exact tabs for the songs as well.

I know it's popular to hate on GHIII here, but to give credit where it is due, they did lipsynch the vocalists mouth with every song in the game. And yes, Rock Band is doing this too.

The lip synching is so God damn beautiful. HMX did a wonderful job. I could watch that Maps part for hours in awe. The emotion behind every animation. How she moves and closes her eyes in synch with the songs tone and...wow.

Oh, rock on. I was just watching Paranoid in GH3 and they didn't seem synced at all. Guess I shouldn't have jumped to comclusions, just a little bitter about Activision milking HMX's cash cow.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bl9BOxxVyoA for the link. Right around 1:05 it just seems like the dude's mouth is flappin out of control. Maybe it's because the character looks so goofy o.O
Also, maybe it's the poor sound quality, but that sounds like a lousy cover of Paranoid. Vocals are uninspired to say the least, and the intro guitar sounds off. Meh.

Sort of half and half. There is lip synching, but they won't mouth the words so much as open and close their mouths at the right time.
If you look at the "In Bloom" part at the beginning of the video, you'll notice that the singer's mouth doesn't mimic the words so much as the timing.
That said, it's a step up from the GH games (where the singer would just start singing randomly at certain times), and a step up from GH3 (which also has lip synching, but happens to have a singer that probably ate the old one).
And the singer is more animated too, which is a plus.
The whole band does as a whole seem believable, but I think it might be too much to expect lip synching that looks like it forms the words as well.

Hell yeah man, the first time I saw that, it gave me goose bumps. That's probably the fruitest thing I've posted on these boards, but it's true. That little touch (little meaning cosmetic, I'd imagine it was a big of work behind the scenes to get this working) adds a ton to the game.

Speaking of synching, the GHIII drummer, while technically playing the drum parts now, looks horribly robotic. They might have been better off just playing the same looped animation again.

It's actually really funny for comedic purposes, watching him wail without moving major joints.

The camera zooming in on the GHIII singer's face reminds me of lame.
The camera zooming in on the Rock Band singer's face reminds me of hawt.

I still can't get over that huge mouth the singer has in III

i don't like the lip synching in gh3, plus the models look so fake to me (lol, i know they are fake but they are comedic cartoony fake). The animations and characters in RB look much more realistic and more smooth.
PS. you cannot tell me that Johnny Napalm does not look exactly like tony hawk in the tony hawk series. , what did they do to johnny, blaaga laaga lagaga

I just hope that in Maps the character gets that "longing" look in their eye and sheds a single tear like the video.

One thing I've thought of that may or may not have been asked before is what will happen to a male singer avatar during a female vocal song? Does the game change the gender of the character but keep the clothes? Does it use a generic singer?

What I've seen in videos is that when there is female singer then a female is singing, most likely this only happens in solo career mode though, or when you personally aren't in control of the singer.

Well I'm pretty sure if nobody is on vocals then it just uses a standard singer (that matches the gender of the singer in the song). If someone is playing on vocals then it would leave the avatar as it is (you are supposed to be singing the song after all).
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Absolutely. Also was blown away by the slow cradle of the mic she does with her hand. That's down-right smokin!
Seems very likely that they'll have some moments like that in most songs since they usually have done some song-specific animations or at least animation timing with GH and GH2.

They've never done song specific animations for songs in GH1 or 2. The most they ever did was that they seemed to restrict the most exciting moves during slow parts of the song, but even that wasn't perfect. During the slow part in FreeBird, all the characters just move at half speed. I remember once Johnny Napalm did a jump kick, and it took like 6 seconds to get back down to the ground. Pure silliness.
So far the new moves match the pace of the song in RB, but beyond that I wouldn't expect too much. Definitely not song specific animations, that'd be crazy. Badass, but crazy. :D
As for lyrics, the ironic thing is that GH3 did full lip syncing with the mouth. So technically, the singing should be way more accurate on the GH3 side of things. But the size of that dude's mouth just ruins it, so Rock Band looks better anyway. Hillarious to me.

GH3's doesn't even look like lip sync.
It really looks like The Muppet Show.

The Lip syncing is just like HL2. I imagine there is a file somewhere that lets the character know what to say. Like in Garry's Mod (a mod for half-life2) If you've changed the files and what is meant to say, you can add a clip inside the file to go along with it, like this video here.
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ri11MJYJCec&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ri11MJYJCec&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I'm glad HMX finally did this with one of their games, makes it look amazing.

HL2's facial animations were a good half-decade ahead of their time. A game her and there is just now catching up to Valve's innovation.
That was an excellent video, btw.

Fruity? Who cares? It is awesome.
EDIT: Whoa! That's really cool SmokaCola! I had heard about HL2 having the ability to do that, but I've never actually seen it in action. That probably is very similar to what HMX did for RB.
