View Full Version : My Idea for "Star Power" (For Guitars)

Hey gang! Just thought of this, and I thought I'd share. It's my idea, so I think it's pretty great and worth your time.

Regarding "Star Power" in Rock Band. Well, let's start at the beginning and the Star Power found in GH II. We all know that Star Power is activated by tilting the neck of the guitar upright. Personally, when I'm playing, I like to jump around, dance like an idiot, and all-round rock-out. Sadly, a lot of times I'd love to quickly bring the neck up and/or down in my rocking, but I have to hold back because I don't want to activate my star power. Very unfortunate. In facet, I feel that it is shameful for a game about rocking to ever limit your rocking-out potential. Furthermore, building up Star Power by hitting certain more-or-less arbitrary sections indicated by star notes seems a little... arbitrary. Somehow, it just feels like a "video game thing" where Rock Band should be more of a "rock utensil."

Yes, I do realise that it is, in fact, a video game. And yes, I am officially coining the term, "rock utensil."

ANYWAY! My system not only no longer limits your movement, but rewards it! Just in the same way the guitar knows when the neck is facing up, it will know when it's being moved around, shaken, jumped with etc. This movement is what builds up my Star Power meter. And screw "Star Power," let's call it the Rock-O-Meter. Or something.

So if jumping around builds up your Rock-O-Meter, then how is it activated? Simple! We already know that there will be a knob on the guitar related to the effects pedal, so, why not one more? This knob will have the numbers 1 through 11 on it, though it only toggles between 10 and 11. 10 is for regular rocking, and when you've built up your Rock-O-Meter, you guessed it, you just crank it up to 11. Awesome.

I'm sure this is do-able for the player because we'll apparently be switching the effects knob on the fly, not to mention it's probably easier to quickly hit the knob than it is to point the neck to the sky. And, I'd say equal to hitting the select button, in terms of easiness.

Although I think it would be fun and totally awesome, there may be a couple problems.
1. What if you play sitting? (Slightly lame, but everyone's legs get tired.)
2. Won't people just shake it crazily to quickly build up? (Maybe it could know if this was going on and... balance it out?)

Anyways, what do you think? Find any more problems with it? Solutions? Ideas?

In fact, I have a huge problem with it.

- Drums are apparently insane. You use actual sticks and hit one of four colored pads in front of you, in addition to a kick pedal attached to the drumming unit. Drummers will also have the ability to do fills etc. in their own little free-form section, do well and you'll trigger the drummers version of star power.

- Whammy bar is back as is the tilt to activate rock band's version of star power

- Singing is now more in depth. There is a phoneme detector that will pick up individual vowels and consonants you say. Build up enough highly judged phrases and you'll be able to sing free-form. If you do well enough in free-form, then you'll trigger the vocalist's version of star power.

Hey, now! There's still about six months before the game comes out, so let's not all jump to conclusions about an article that someone's paraphrased and put on the inninet.

:)

I'm just saying, it's my little idea it's completely hypothetical, and it's just something I'd like to see in the game. Maybe someone at Harmonix will read my post, say to themselves "Golle gee! What a great idea! I'm glad the game doesn't come out for six months and we still have plenty of time to put this in!" The who'll be laughing? Me! That's who! Laughing all the way to the bank...

That, and two other problems.

1. Star Power in the midst of a solo. How you gonna turn the know during that solo in Jordan?

2. Someone leaves it on 11. Next star power, it gets instantly used.

I think it's a pretty awful idea. Why the need to strike a balance between wildly shaking a guitar and concentrating on hitting the correct notes? The implementation in GH is already perfect. It would be so annoying having to tire yourself out by shaking the guitar continuously just to build up star power. You should be rewarded for playing well, not for having a seizure.

Hahaha... okay awesome. Arguments all taken and given due consideration, and apparently it's a ******ed idea.

Someone close this thread forever while I go invent my own original game, Guitar Band Seisure Hero: Turn It Up To 11 Edition.

Really, I'm not a huge fan of the star-notes, but I can get over the tilting of the guitar. Star power should be awarded for the number of notes hit at 4X instead of just a few star notes here and there. Then again, that's just my opinion.

Bad idea. What about songs like Misirlou?

Well some people can actually play songs like Misirlou rather well. So I mean that really wouldn't be such a bad idea.

But if someone was bad at misirlou, then that someone would never finish it.

Everyone plays some songs well, and some songs poorly. I can nail Misirlou, but I suck at Psychobilly Freakout at any level. I can't seem to get YYZ, either. It's just the style the notes are played. They aren't neccessarily that hard... Just, awkward. Either way, with the star power we have now, some people are going to blow all the star power riffs on some songs, and nail others. That's the way it works, either way. Plus, all songs have sections where you can get to 4x for a time... Hangar 18 has the entire first half of the song, Psychobilly Freakout has that part... I don't know how to describe it, but you probably know what I mean.

Star Power is an awkward thing. Star Power has two main issues.

1. Activation - My XB360 is a bit like my first PS2 Guitar, it has a hair trigger, the slightest up movement and Star Power is triggered. My other PS2 guitar is the total opposite, i've watched my mates frantically shake the crap out of the guitar while holding it vertically and jumping up and down trying to activate star power. A pedal option would be nice, i know you can hit a button but thats a a really awkward taks and someone always ends up pausing the game at a really bad moment.

2. Accumulation - I thin the way Star Power is awarded atm is fine, and I dont mind adminiting that on Expert I would not have passed some of the songs if it wasnt for some opportune star power moments. Im stuck on the section with Psychobilly Freakout right now and will need some star power Im sure.

Oh yeah, on that note, can we go back to the complete 5 of 6 songs to progress please. I spent two friggin' weeks on Freya and nearly gave up on the whole game.
