View Full Version : The "official" stop with the random polls.

Come on now, be a little sensible when you create posts. There is no need to have 50 random polls up on this forum. If you create random polls for the sake of creating random polls, expect them to get locked.
This thread needs to get locked..

I'm really sorry if this is against the rules... But can I have an explanation as to why you locked my thread? I was having fun... Prolly 'casue we went from candy and word games to Larry and stealing souls right?

Also maybe an explanation on what kind of threads you consider to be pointless for future reference.

This thread is lacking a poll. :p
But I get what you're saying. I don't like to create threads, instead, I'd rather just hijack other threads like "What are you doing right now?" thread. hehe

pointless
adjective
1. not having a point especially a sharp point; "my pencils are all pointless" [ant: pointed]
2. serving no useful purpose; having no excuse for being; "otiose lines in a play"; "advice is wasted words"; "a pointless remark"; "a life essentially purposeless"; "senseless violence" [syn: otiose]
I thought the stewie appreciation thread served a purpose....
But thats really an opinion. Saying a poll doesn't have a purpose is an opinion, and I don't think it's fair to lock threads because YOU thought it was stupid, childish, and pointless.
I find some random polls entertaining. That's the only reason i'm on these forums. Not because of Rock Band.

If everyone created posts everytime they hit a milestone with a number of posts, everyone would be posting those threads all the time. Stewie is not the only one it has ever happened to, nor am I the only mod to lock threads on this forum.
As for the polls, i dont have a problem with them ,but the ones that do not actually ask any real questions, what is the point?
see example:
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61050
I dont care about actual polls, but ones like the one above are what will be locked as it is just considered spam.

Lock it up please!!!
That one seems to be a desperate attempt at raising the post counter. Most threads won't get THAT bad, but I agree if those show up. They need to be locked. But like :
Apples or Oranges?
McDonalds or Burger King?
etc..
Are acceptable. Right?

As i stated before, those are perfectly fine, its an actual poll of things being compared to another thing.

I completely agree with Daesania on this.
When you create a thread and make the statement "This will probably be locked but..." then you should just close the window and not hit submit.
Pointless threads that contain 50 posts by one person and 55 total posts are just out-of-hand.

Not that I support the random polls or any of that stuff that is...well...random, but isn't that what the General forum is for? So as to not clutter up the real forums?

That's good to know, the polls were really becoming stupid after the first 20 different polls.

Yes... but not to the point where they are just polls/posts that contain nothing but spam basically.

Good enough for me, the mods got the final word.
By the way, how many of those polls did he actually do? I participated in one of the first ones but I'm not on all the time and didn't see how many he did.

Threads (including polls) need to make sense and have a logical discussion attached to them.
Creating a poll and attaching 5 random comments does not count.

Yah but does that explain why only have 37 posts? I had over 10,000 posts me having only 37 is now is absolutely ridiculous.

Its just a post count anyway.

Post count is irrelevant. It's the quality of the posts that matters.
##,### of posts saying "Hey guys" doesn't even come close to the same quality as say... 2,866 posts that actually contribute to real, intelligent and above all relevant conversations... or make you laugh. ;)

exactly, and he never once made a poll or statement that made any contribution to anything other than him trying to commit statatory, hes 22 and always hits on a 16 yo girl

I really didn't mean to attack any particular forum member.
I was simply pointing out that I don't hold someone with thousands of posts in the same regard as I would someone like Apples(NOT BECAUSE HE'S A FORUM MOD, I CAN PROVE IT WATCH- F YOU APPLES;)) simply because their post count might be higher.
I'm not trying to say that goofing off and having a little fun or "letting your hair down" shouldn't be allowed around here, I don't think that's what anyone is saying.
But let's think of it this way- if I was a moderator and could delete 5 threads(threads of such nature as "What are you doing RIGHT NOW?") and your post count would be cut by over 75%, then maybe you need to expand your horizons.
Let me put it to you another way... I have a few less than 2,900 posts on these forums since December of last year and if you search my name(although the search does NOT include EVERY thread you've ever posted in I have noticed) you'll see I have been apart of about 500 threads. IF you have a significantly greater number of posts than me and have been apart of less than 250 threads- don't you think something is wrong?
I am in all honestly NOT making this statement to any particular forum member, there are plenty of people who do this.
I think that is a big part of what the issue is.
Threads like: "Hi", "Hey", "How are you?", "I'm good you?", "Fine, and thank you for asking" etc... are best left for private message conversation. Or get AIM and start a Rock band chatroom. Or the IRC chat.

I think you know when you cross the line from the "Okay"-kind of random to the "incessant chatter"-kind of random. I know it's a general forum, and it's not breaking any rules, but I really hate to see a thread go from a conversation to a series of in-jokes or tireless banter of a small clique.
Please don't take this personally, anyone.

Here is my take on post counts and other various points. This is not directed at anyone in particular, so please keep that in mind.
Post counts are overrated. Not a big deal. Whatever. There I said it
I have an extensive number of posts and I joined in April. Does this mean I have no life? Nope. Does this mean that I post a lot? Yep. Are all of my posts of a reasonable, thought out nature? Not at all. Does this bother me? No, not at all.
When I first joined this forum, I was exclusive to the main Rock Band forum. I tried to help out others, give advice, etc…. When that specific part of the forum turned into a flame fest, I made my way over here to general to find a much more laid back group of folks.
While I do admit that I am guilty of chatting it up here in general, I also will pronounce that I try to keep it solely in the “What Are You Doing Now” thread. You will probably find that the preponderance of my posts lie within that thread. I have also derailed a few threads but it was unintentional. Sometimes it just happens.
I don’t have AIM, YIM or any kind of personal messaging feature with the exception of email. My email is only used for work related issues and close friends and family. I don’t use chat rooms either. It is a personal choice of mine.
So with all that being said, I just don’t understand what others expect out of the general forum. While I agree that some of the “random” polls were becoming excessive, I think that chatting and casually talking with other posters in one particular thread is not at all harmful to the community as a whole. As long as the conversations are not carrying over to a specific subject matter or thread, it shouldn’t be a big deal.
This may not be the most trendy outlook, but it is how I feel. I also don’t want to burn bridges here with anyone that posted in this thread that has a differing opinion. Debating this issue is also out of the question as I like everyone here and I want to remain at peace with everyone.
In hindsight, I used to be a moderator of a very active forum for prospective nurses (most of them were very young and chatty girls) so I understand how frustrating that it can be to weed through topics that have six different conversations going on. So I empathize with both sides of the spectrum here.
So that is how I feel, ladies and gentleman. Thanks for reading.
