I was going to subtly tuck this into my sig and let it be, but I guess I'm something of a 'tard because I can't seem to find that option in my profile settings.

Anyway, disgusted by all the comparison articles I've seen put up by professional sites, I took it on myself to do a little write-up with info based on what was available just before yesterday morning... If you're interested, check it out here:

http://www.ultrace.com/main/byte/GH3vsRB.html

Most of the info included will be known to the forum-goers here, but it might fill in gaps for others, who knows.

You can't say GH3 has 70+ songs (Which INCLUDES the bonus songs) and then turn around and say RB will only have 45.

I stopped reading there, your opinion means nothing to me now if you don't even get a simple fact like that correct. Sounds like every other dumb comparison article I've ever read.

common misconception with the song lists between rock band and guitar hero. Rock Band will have pretty much just as many songs at launch as GH3 will. Rock Band will have 45(+) Main Set List songs, and an unconfirmed amount of bonus songs, at this point now there are 8 Bonus Songs already.

seriously is the most annoying thing that everyone thinks RB has only 45. Ugh. Change the website harmonix! (and announce all the songs! which.. I think is supposed to happen today at ign anyway?)

While I don't agree with all of what you had to say, that was very well written.

Except for the opening line where you referred to Kanye West and 50 Cent as "music".

It's the best I could come up with based on the information available. GH3 said from the beginning they would have over 70 songs (including bonus songs.) RB has indicated it will have 45 licensed songs, plus bonus songs. I can't even put down a number like "53+" because we don't know of the songs announced recently which ones are bonus songs and which ones are on the main setlist. I'm only aware of a small handful of Harmonix group songs announced, not the 8 bonus songs someone mentions below.

If you have a better way of phrasing it, I'm all ears... In the meantime, thanks for the oh-so-gentle critique. :)

Count only the Main List tracks from GH3 and voila it's even-steven.

Compare apples to apples: How many licensed songs does each have? How many bonus? Compare the numbers to the equivalent numbers.

Oh, and HMX bands should count twice. ;)

Bang Camaro equals 20 songs. :D

Well that's ignorant. i suppose that's a debate for a different forum, though.

Yea man, easiest way is to say Both games will feature 45+ Main Songs, and a slew of bonus songs! :D ... Done and unbiased.

Although admittedly, Guitar Hero 3's bonus songs at this point right now, walk all over Rock Band's bonus songs. Neversoft really stepped it up in the Bonus Songs department, IMHO.

Now, if Coheed and Cambria, The Outlaws, and Flyleaf were bonus songs, thats getting right on par with Guitar Hero III's bonus songs. Sadly though, I'm pretty sure most or all of those will be Main Set List songs.

Exactly.

Your whole point was trying to break free from the crap comparisons that the gaming sites have been doing and you basically parroted everything they say! Or at least you did up until the song number comparison. Don't forget I stopped reading there :P

Thanks for the feedback, all. I'll change the wording tonight when I can get back home and to managing the website. In the meantime, those of you who stopped reading in disgust can perhaps provisionally keep on going. ;)

I do not understand going through the trouble to make one of these when neither of the games are out.

Alright, you get one more read. But I better not find another comparison like that :P

Who knows, you may find more basis to tear me a new one, but it's all based on either information confirmed from sources, numerous opinions I've read (for the guitar controllers, etc.) or what I witnessed myself at the tour... But I'm also not infallible, either, so there we are...

The most fun songs in GH1 and 2 were Bodton and HMX bands. All of This and Push Push (Lady Lightning) were awesome. Subjective, yes, but the formula has worked well for them in the past.

You can't compare and contrast two games that are not even out yet. Even if you have GH3 early you still havn't played the FULL version of RB so you can't give full impressions on the two.

Good stuff, but agreed that you can't properly review both games based on a demos.

That said, I'd say the difference can be covered quite succinctly:

Rock Band - Made by musicians for people who like music
GH3 - Made by gamers for people who like games
