Ok fellas I just needed to hear your opinions me and a fellow forumite (joetaylor i think is his username, as well as his real life name, being skl mates en all) are argueing on a few finer points of videogaming. I want to know where you lot stand.
The Gamer's Corner (i.e. Me):
Mario 64 is the best platformer of all time, and Mario's games continue to be brilliant today.
Zelda is one of the best adventure gamers of all time.
GH3 is a disgrace to the GH series (judging on demo of course).
The Other Corner (i.e. Joe):
Mario and Zelda are crap and kiddy.
Jak 2 is the greatest platformer ever and an all round classic blowing the pants off Mario.
GH3 looks awesome.
Just tell me what you think on those points to settle an old arguement :P

Why argue over games? You both have different opinions. I love Mario, dislike Zelda, Cant wait for GHIII.

I don't see how Mario 64 was the best but that was just my opinion. I think GH3 will be fine but definetly not the best. Jak is ok, ratchet and clank is better.

Zelda is great. Mario is good.
God Of War may be the best platform, although Out Of This World is awesome.
GHIII by far is not the best of the series.

I can't say Zelda is the best adventure game. My main problem is that the story never progresses.
How many times has Ganon surfaced as some super-evil guy and you find yourself running across the Hyrulian countryside collecting items to further you in your quest?
All they do is add a few characters and change the story and remake the game. You know what other game does that? Street Fighter II.

Mario 64 is the best platformer of all time...however, pretty much every other Mario game after it was a let down. And I think the 2d Sonics beat any 2d Mario.
Zelda owns. Except Majora's Mask
Guitar Hero 3 is the best music game ever made. Period.

*shrug* say what you will, but I still just think it's GH2 with way more stuff and, for my taste at least, it has the best tracklist of any video game I've ever played.

Umm, you're both wrong? ;)
Mario is great, but the only Marios after 64 that were really good were the Paper Marios (except that new Wii one...). The best platformer is Symphony of the Night.
Is Zelda even an adventure game? I thought Space Quest and Monkey Island (the best ones) were adventure games. If you mean action-adventure/rgps then I'd say Zelda is still up there, but I really like God of War and Kingdom Hearts II also. Zelda's probably always been the best on handheld systems, though (the final bad guys tend NOT to be Gannon on those).
As for Jak 2, I couldn't bear playing through the first one to even consider the sequels. It felt too much like one of those crappy "collect the stuff for no good reason" games Rare made 5million versions of for the 64.
GH3 isn't awful, and I don't get why so many people think it is. I mean, it's still the same basic game, and it has a really great setlist. I don't think the changes are so drastic that it won't still be fun to play.

I agree with mostly you:
Mario is awesome, but Id have to say either Paper Mario(1) or Super Mario Bros. Deluxe would be the best platform of all time
The Legend of Zelda rocks. period.
Ive never played any of the Jak series.
Im looking forward to getting Guitar Hero III this Sunday, although I havent played the demo.

I agree with you on the first two and disagree on the third. I think its blatantly obvious Mario and Zelda are gods of their respective genres but GH3 is pretty good(not as good as GH2 though).
As far as best platformer of all time? Ask me again November 13th when Mario Galaxy is out. As of right now I'd say Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros 3

The best platformer is Symphony of the Night.
Even though it has platforming, I always consider it more of an action game. Either way its an amazing game. Castlevania universe + Metroid gameplay was an obvious winner.
Paper Marios
I don't get why Super Paper Mario gets so much hate. Aside from 1 or 2 dumb sections and way too much dialog (both prior Paper Mario games have these problems too) Its an absolutely great Rpg/platformer that beautifully mixed nostalgia with new ideas and brought some great innovation and puzzles with 2d/3d switch. Seriously SPM is way underrated.
Is it because they dropped turnbased battles for real time action?

It's killing me inside a little but I agree with everything gh2wellalmost said. I can't believe I just typed that. I'm getting GHIII on a midnight release tonight but still very worried and playing the demo didn't make things better. It made it worse a little. Mario64 is by far the best Mario game and IS the best platformer. Remember what games were like before it came out. If you don't you really can't comment on this subject. Zelda is great and after all these years it still kill most games like it.

Best platformer=SMB3, Symphony of the Night or Super Ghouls and Ghosts
OoT is one of the best games of all time.
GH3 won't suck, but I'm not ultra-excited for it.

Bloody hell I'm being nice for ones and you still wanna stick the knife in? Ah well. "Turn the other cheek" and all that sh*t (no toilet paper references required :P)
Anyway it wasnt really a proper arguement just gamer's banter. He also thinks NFS:PS is awesome... :P
Anyway thanks for your opinions.

I'll tackle this in bullet points:
-Mario 64 is one of the best platformers of all time, and certainly one of the most important. Mario has kinda slipped recently, though, in my opinion (Super Mario Sunshine, anyone?), and it's got some fierce competition these days (Ratchet & Clank series)
- Zelda is one of the best adventure games of all time. (I prefer the old 2D ones, myself. Liked OOT okay, but don't worship it like most people. Hated Wind Waker. Am liking Twilight Princess, so far).
-GH3 is looking fine to me. Good song picks and all that. But I believe that people's massive expectations towards Rock Band are starting to paint GH3 in a negative light, comparatively.
-Mario and Zelda are kiddy-looking. There is no denying that. But they are far, very far from being "crap". Any true gamer knows how important these games have been in the development of their respective genres.
-Jak 2 is okay, but I probably wouldn't put it on the Top 10 platformers of all time list. Especially in light of superior contemporaries (Ratchet & Clank).
There ya have it. A (hopefully) relatively unbiased view of this argument.

Mario is alright, Zelda ****ing owns! Shadow of the Collossus is the best platformer ever! GH3 is going to kick ass, but it is the same game with new tracks. Like any given AC/DC song, they are all basically the same song, but at least its one of the best songs ever. Raining Blood and Number of the Beast = win.

Ok, I'm actually going to change my mind here, after going back and playing them, I like Sonic Adventure and Klonoa 2(if you've never played it and you own a ps2, its roughly $7, go buy it) better than Mario 64.
And Shadow of the Colossus isn't a platform game...it is amazing tho

GHIII is a disgrace to the GH series, but still fun.
Mario rules, Zelda does not.
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is the greatest platformer of all time.
