View Full Version : No love for rhythm guitar?

Well, I've thought about it for a bit, but thought there would be no point in implementing it, until now.

Recently, with the announced 10 fret lead guitar, I've thought that it would be great to reuse old GH/GH2 controllers, not as leads, but as rhythm guitars. If the lead vocals could play a simplistic track, it would alleviate the (no offense (well, some offense is intended)) pretty abysmal idea of doubling the headset as a tambourine. A tambourine has no place in a hard rock / metal song, which is where most of those long solos that it would be needed for would reside.

Not only would a rhythm guitar make the game feel more complete, but it would give vocals an excellent thing to do whilst not singing. It would also much better fit the hard rock motif of the game over a lame tambourine. It'll feel like you're really on vocals in a band, not just some guy on a fancy karaoke machine.

Yeah that would be a cool idea but what about songs with no rhythm?

And while we're on the topic, is every song in the game going to have Bass with no rhythm at all?

They should probably toggle rhythm guitar and bass as they did in GH2.

And the 5 extra frets are for solos only, which means that old guitars will still work fine as leads. The notes board on the screen still has only 5 colors and etc ... read the announcemnet a second time, you'll get it.

There are enough songs with both rhythm guitar and bass to warrant putting it in.

Far more than naturally have tambourine, that is.

I was under the impression that the non-lead guitar was going to be playing either bass or rhythm already. Not many songs have consistent lead, rhythm and bass in the whole song to warrant such an addition.

I'm assuming that by tambourine they mostly mean hitting to the beat of the song.

Oh, I wouldn't bet too highly on the PS2 controllers being re-used in the game.

I don't get why everyone assumes there aren't enough situations to warrant having a rhythm guitar. When you think about the standard garage band (and really, most bands), what do you think of the members on? Drums, Bass, Lead, and Vocals/Rhythm is what I, and I assume most people, imagine. There are plenty of songs that have constant bass, rhythm, and lead through the entire song. Especially in songs that have both acoustic/acoustic electric and electric, this would be a welcome feature.

If that's all it is, why would they bother implementing it? I already tap my foot when I sing, and I assume most people keep rhythm somehow, so why would they need to add a useless, and more importantly, not very fun feature?

Also, really, there aren't going to be many people wanting to be on main vocals. If they made it more glamorous by adding guitar, I'm sure it will balance the community out a bit.

All it would really take to make it work is a (rather simple) extra chart for songs, and a slight mod of the UI. I'd imagine they could move drums to where the Vocals are currently, put lead in the middle instead of left, put rhythm on the left, and vocals scroll along the bottom.

D-R--U--M-S
R |---L--| B
H |---E--| A
Y |---A--| S
T |---D--| S
V-O--C--A-L

That way, Rhythm would be able to see their lines as their crossing the end on the left, and still see their notes in the same eyeful.

And weren't GH guitars confirmed compatible?

The point is that the more you add to the game's complexity in instruments, the more restricted the song pool gets. Already, instrumentals are ruled out. Why alienate the rest of songs without consistent bass, rhythm and lead in them?

I don't think it's supposed to be enormously fun or challenging. It's just meant to keep you busy when there aren't any vocals. Making the vocalist play a guitar would probably make someone playing the game who just wants to sing uncomfortable.

For the 360. I don't think so for the PS2. But I could be wrong about that.

I think having 5 instruments would be a little too much, but it does discourage me if the carrer is going to be "Bass" insated of "bass/rythmn". So lets say they get RAdiohead in the game (whoch would cause me to cream my pants), would we have to play the ****ty bass in Paranoid Android instead of the amazing rythmn guitar or aucoustic?

Not all parts are equal, man. Regardless of the song, one part will be deemed the best, no matter what it is. Why not play both for all songs instead of having to pick and choose?
