A battle between two shock-rocking giants!
ALICE COOPER
Alice Cooper was originally a band consisting of Furnier on vocals and harmonica, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce on rhythm guitar, Dennis Dunaway on bass guitar, and drummer Neal Smith. The original Alice Cooper band broke into the international music mainstream with 1971's monster hit "I'm Eighteen" from the album Love it to Death, which was followed by the even bigger single "School's Out" in 1972. The band reached their commercial peak with the 1973 album Billion Dollar Babies. Cooper's solo career began with the 1975 concept album Welcome to My Nightmare. In 2008 he released Along Came a Spider, his 18th solo album. Expanding from his Detroit garage rock[2] and glam rock[3] roots, over the years Cooper has experimented with many different musical styles, including conceptual rock, art rock, hard rock, pop rock, experimental rock and industrial rock. In recent times he has returned more to his garage rock roots.[4]
vs
KISS
Kiss is an American rock band formed in New York City in January 1973. Easily identified by its members' trademark face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid-1970s on the basis of their elaborate live performances, which featured fire-breathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, and pyrotechnics. Kiss has been awarded 34 gold albums to date.[1] The group's worldwide sales exceed 80 million albums.[2]
The original lineup of Paul Stanley (vocals and rhythm guitar), Gene Simmons (vocals and bass guitar), Ace Frehley (lead guitar and vocals), and Peter Criss (drums, percussion and vocals) is the most successful and identifiable. With their makeup and costumes, they took on the personae of comic book-style characters: The Demon (Simmons), Starchild (Stanley), Spaceman (Frehley), and The Catman (Criss). The band explains that the fans were the ones who ultimately chose their makeup designs. The "Demon" makeup reflected Gene's cynicism and dark elements, as well as his love for comic books. Paul Stanley became the "Starchild" due to his tendency to be referred to as the "starry-eyed lover" and "hopeless romantic." Ace Frehley's "Spaceman" makeup was a reflection of him wanting to go for a ride in a space ship and supposedly being from another planet. Peter Criss' "Catman" makeup was in accordance with the belief that Peter had nine lives due to his rough childhood in Brooklyn. Due to creative differences, both Criss and Frehley were out of the group by 1982. The band's commercial fortunes had also waned considerably by that point.
In 1983, Kiss abandoned its makeup and enjoyed a commercial resurgence throughout the rest of the decade. Buoyed by a wave of Kiss nostalgia in the 1990s, the band announced a reunion of the original lineup (with makeup) in 1996. The resulting Kiss Alive/Worldwide/Lost Cities/Reunion Tour was the top-grossing act of 1996 and 1997. Criss and Frehley have since left Kiss again and have been replaced by Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, respectively. The band continues to perform, while Stanley and Simmons have remained the only two constant members.

KISS. As much as I love Alice Cooper, KISS was the first band I ever got into, so they take it for me.

Kiss isgreat in their own way but all of they're music tends to get stale and repetitive. At least Cooper has tried to branch in new directions without completely giving up his own sound.

i think it's fair to state the majority of members on this board hate/don't rate/KISS (or have only heard one or two songs and thus make their judgements on their multiple member lineup & 35 year career on these one or two tracks) - I have to say, judging by some of the musical knowledge and 'taste' on display in this forum...This actually makes me quite happy :)
After all - you wouldn't want a bunch of idiots being into your fave band, would you? :P

If by 'branch in new directions without completely giving up his own sound' you mean 'hire the same songwriters as KISS (Desmond Child, Diane Warren) to create a new, pop-friendly hit single getting sound', then yeah I suppose you're right! :P

Here's the flip side of that coin. I had a buddy who idolized Alice, had every piece of vinyl that he released...Alice was playing the Edinburgh playhouse, as far as I remember the story it was winter - winter in Scotland is pretty bloody cold I can tell you. This story is in the 80's btw, my bud was aged around 19 at the time.
So, my bud has his ticket for the concert and thought he'd go along early to try to get his records signed. He was standing at the stage door from about 10am with his bag of records (in the freezing cold).
He waited. And waited. Around mid-afternoon, he had gotten so cold he decided to leave standing outside the stage door and go get a cup of coffee to heat him up a little - just for 5 mins (in case he missed Alice). So he left and got his coffee...
On his way back to the stage door, he noticed a man with his back to him also walking towards the stage door. Long black hair, black leather jacket...Could it be? He realises it *is* Alice Cooper and starts running towards him with his bag of records .
He shouts out 'Alice!' and Alice Cooper turns round - at this point, my buddy's bag holding his vinyl bursts. All his records spill out onto the road.
At this same point, Alice Cooper had reached the stage door. He never said a word, laughed at my friends misfortune, and entered the stage door, closing it behind my heartbroken pal.
He never bought an Alice Cooper record again.
Perhaps it was just too cold for him to sign some records for a fan.

Wow. Do you write fiction novels in real life?
Alice Cooper > KISS
For all we know you could be making that story up, and Gene is just as much of an a$$. Doesn't change my opinion that KISS is no doubt the most overrated band. KISS was kind of a one time deal. You liked em for a bit and then you got sick of them. So, you'll probably need to get over that stage soon. It's not like they produced any good music anyways..

Wow. Actually, no I don't write fiction novels in real life but feel free to accuse me of being a liar. :S I notice you didn't call out the dude who's mom opened a door for Alice in the same way?
You're entitled to your opinion that Alice is better than KISS, and Gene Simmons is so much of an ******* he named his pitiful solo album as such.
Again, as I've mentioned before KISS have *NEVER* been overrated. Loved by the fans, hated by the critics.
Btw, I'm 37 - almost twice as old as you, and hence have been listening to music for twice as long. I've been playing guitar since I was 8 (professionally for a few years), bass since 14 and drums since 16. I've been into KISS since before you were born, and will continue to enjoy their music (so it's probably not a 'stage I'll get over') for many years to come. Perhaps as you get older, you'll appreciate other types of music more yourself. :)

Well, thats kinda sad. Using your age to prove your music is better?
Let me break it down for you:
Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley suck, and their overrated.
"Rock and Roll All Night" is no doubt the most overrated song ever performed.

I dont think he is trying to prove that his music is any better (read the posts again). He is merely stating that he prefers Kiss to Cooper and is defending Kiss.
You on the other hand seem prepared to diss another band in order to display how much better you think your hero is. That is the saddest thing I can see on this page, far more sadder than someone attempting to show you that they may have a slightly more objective opinion than you do.
Some may argue that Stanley and Frehely were capable of writing complete songs (music and all) and werent just singers who write lyrics ;-P

Actually, If you read my post I didn't 'use my age to prove my music was better' at all. So, sad for you if you didn't understand it the first time.
Let me explain - you said 'So, you'll probably need to get over that stage soon'
To which I pointed out that since I've been listening to KISS since before you were born, enjoying their music wasn't something that I'd 'need to get over'.
Nowhere do I say anything about my music being better than anyone elses. As you get older, your tastes will change - You can stick your head in the sand about it all you want mate, but it's bound to happen.
In reference to your comments on Ace Frehley & Paul Stanley, let me tell you a phrase that I enjoy using.
"All the things that I like are great, all the things that you like suck"
So, I'll say it to you, then you can say it right back to me, fair?

First of all, Alice Cooper is NOT my hero. The story he presented gave the impression to influence people to vote KISS, and bring Alice Cooper under the "im a jerk, dont vote for me" spotlight. He failed miserably. Unless you have proof of that story, (in a book or a link) it is a RUMOR. You cannot base your opinions on Alice Cooper, with a rumored story explaining about how much of a jerk he is.
You on the other hand, are getting pretty close.
And you don't even know me, don't be so quick to judge my opinions on this matter. I'm not a crazy Alice Cooper fan. In fact, i'm not even close to it. I maybe like one of his songs (Not School's Out, its pretty overrated).
I don't find ANYTHING talented in KISS and I think their pretty overrated. I'm pretty tired of how people don't realize this. We even had a poll for most overrated band, and the most of the entire forum voted KISS!! Even the kiss fans. You'd think after the one dude has had 20 something years to figure out that their OVERRATED. Do we have to knock some sense into yah?
BTW, this is "BoTB" if you don't like a general discussion, just leave. You already posted 3 posts in a row (which is against the rules, and called spam). And those three posts didn't give any helpful information what so ever, except for some story you don't even know thats true (which is posting a rumor, which is also against the rules) Which just shows your opinion that
"Alice Cooper is a major douchebag".
Get over yourself..
Alice Cooper 10 58.82%
Kiss 7 41.18%

As opposed to the previous story presented to give the impression to influence people to vote for Alice under the 'I'm a good guy for saying thanks for someone's mom opening a door, vote for me' spotlight?
Two sides of the coin, mate.
Plus, since you ask for 'proof' regarding my story concerning my buddy & Alice Cooper (and without such 'proof' it is in merely rumour), could I please see your 'proof' that KISS is the most overrated band and that 'Rock and Roll All Nite' is the most overrated song ever performed? I look forward to seeing it.
Oh - As indicated by yourself, forum posts do not count as 'proof'.

Firstly, I said used the word 'hero' satirically. I in now way alluded that Alice was your best buddy.
Secondly, if you think that fans will be put off Alice because of Kelvis's story then maybe that says more about his fanbase than anything? He printed that story in response to another post, which you have yet to acknowledge.
One wonders if any Kiss fans will be put off their heroes as a result of your rants?
Next I find it mightly Ironic that someone can dismiss an entire bands musical history thus:

And then tell someone else to get over themselves?
Finally, unless you are a moderator on this forum please desist from waving the rule book at me in an attempt to further your 'arguement'. Oh and feel free to report me for 'spam' if you have enough courage in your convictions.
In summary, I would love to continue this war of words with you, but it is ungentlemanly to fight with an un-armed 'man'
Have a nice day

It's obvious your only defending him because your his "friend". And yes, one persons opinion/and or rumors can persuade a person to not like a band any more. I know alot of kiss fans, that now HATE gene because he is money hungry and doesn't care about his fans. All of which came from one article where gene states that "he hates pimply faced kids and they ruined rock n roll". You know what gene? I think YOU ruined rock n roll.
While I will leave this thread, (as it is pointless to try and persuade a couple of 11 year olds who think their "adults" that KISS is overrated, even if they have a couple good songs and wrote the most "iconic rock songs ever"), what a load of BS that is << I am craving some Battlefield right now. And I have some clan stuff to get organized here in a few. And I actually go outside of my house. What color is the sky again Kelvis?

That has to be one of the funniest posts I have ever read in a forum.
Defiant to the end, even though you have contributed nothing of any depth to the thread whatsoever.
Still trying to sell your 'opinion' as fact. You feel that Kiss are over-rated and are prepared to resort to accusing people of lying and to wave the rule book at another poster who dare to disagree with your opinion, rather than back up your theories with any facts.

KISS, Gene, Paul, Peter and Ace are awesome. After that ehhhhhh hit and miss. I've got all the albums up to and including Creatures of the Night and the big arse box set they put out , what 4 or 5 years ago? Seen 'em live several times all great shows except the Crazy Nights Tour, off night for them when i caught them.
That being said, Cooper all the way. No contest. Gene himself has said if it wasn't for Alice KISS would have been a different band. After seeing Alice live Gene thought to himself if one Alice Cooper is so successful how about 4 in the same band?
I do genuinely think Alice is a better song writer and the original Alice Cooper Group better players than KISS. Some of the other lineups he's had since have been worse. I feel Alice is more relevant at this point as he continues to release new material and tour while I'm not really sure what Gene is thinking/planning as Paul continues to downplay some of his claims lately.
As for the duelling stories of encounters with them, I don't put much stock in them. I mean we could all sit here and trade war stories on who we met that was cool and who was an jerk. These folks are just people like us, no different, they just happen to be famous. Bummer your friend caught Alice on a bad day as you do have to look pretty hard to find bad things said about him. He's pretty known for being a down to earth humble fellow. As an aside you mentioned it was the 80's so Im curious as to what part of the 80's it was, early mid, late? He was back drinking heavily during the early 80's so that could explain it. Not an excuse for it but it would explain the generally uncharacteristic behaviour. But I digress. I know there are stories that refute the Gene is a jerk claim. I have friends that have met and dealt with Gene a few times and have nothing but good things to say about the meetings. Class act they say, I'll take them at their word. I met David Lee Roth once, jerk. My friend met him , they hung out and partied all night. Great guy. Apparently I caught him on the wrong day. /e, shrugs
Anyway , both bands awesome, IMO Alice moreso.

KISS or Alice Cooper? I'll choose Alice Cooper in this case. I like KISS, don't get me wrong, the live shows look interesting, Deuce is a nice song IMO. However if I had a chance to go back in time and see Alice Cooper or KISS, I'll choose Alice Cooper. I find Alice Cooper's songs to be great and in addition to that, watching the show would be awesome.

/e, shrugs
Absolutely right AvH. That was just my (only) Alice Cooper anecdote, I didn't think relating it would have caused so much grief.
Similar example, I heard Freddie Mercury was an arrogant git, but in 1982 I watched the man (and the other members of Queen) standing outside the venue (no bodyguards) after a concert for about half-an-hour signing autographs & posing for photos with fans.

If I publish a book of anecdotes, or create a web page that I can link to that story, will that change the story's status from 'rumour' to 'truth'? :P
