View Full Version : Rock Band Drummers Dream Realized In RB2?

This quote comes from the AV Clubs/The Onions hands on.

Quote:
"The real upsell is the drum kit. If you're a serious drummer, you can buy the improved kit with a metal-reinforced pedal, quieter, velocity-sensitive pads, and wireless support on all platforms. The kit also comes with new additions and peripherals, which will be revealed at E3. And about the drums. Clearly, the addition of a drum kit marked a new direction for the franchise: while the guitar loosely simulates and abridges the experience of playing guitar, the drum kit is a drum kit, and the game represents an actual set of training wheels for up-and-coming percussionists. Rock Band 2 takes this a step further with the addition of an actual drum training program. I watched Teasdale demo this, and it resembles the game's practice mode, but with a large library of basic beats and fills: "Simple 8th Note Hats," "Robot Rock," "P-P-P-Panama!", "Upbeat Hats 1," and so forth, all playable on three kits – electronic, vintage, and "trashy." There's also a freeplay mode, where you can play drums over mp3's that you've ripped to your console"

Ok I'll just highlight some of the awesomeness from this loooong quote. ;)

1.) a freeplay mode, where you can play the drums over MP3's ripped to your console. (imagine the possibilities  )
2.) Drum Trainer mode, to include a large library of basic beats and fills, all playable on three drums kits "electronic" "vintage" and "trashy" (Now you can REALLY learn to play from a video game)
3.)The drum kit also comes with new additions and periphrials that will be revealed at E3. (Perhaps.... cymbals...double bass)

All this is a RB drummers dream....Thank you HMX if this turns out to be true!!

P.S. Sorry for making so many threads today...just too much excitment...too much news... I may pass out by the time E3 even gets here... OH my....

Damn you Harmonix!

I just spent all summer playing drums and fooling people into thinking that I've played more than 6 months of plastic drums. I had to learn how to do fills and which beats to use all on my own.

Now you make that a feature!?

You have made Rock Band 2 too good, and are going to make me buy it. I somewhat resent you for that...

av club is the entertainment article/review offshoot of the onion. they actually do a really good job with music reviews, not as pretentious as pitchfork... check them out, its a pretty cool site.

What do you all think will happen with the upgraded pedals like the Omega Pedal or DIY alarm sensor pedals? I'm a little concerned that they might not work with the new drum kits since they're supposed to be velocity sensitive (maybe just the pads are V.S. though?). Either way, they should still work with RB2 as long as you use the RB1 drum kit, but it would be nice to be able to use the good pedal with the new kit as well. Perhaps they will still work with the new kit but just be the same volume for every hit?

Didn't the AV Club article mention a metal pedal on the new drum kit already?

Edit: Yes, the new pedal is metal. Problem solved?

I'm referring to the modified real bass drum pedals like the ones at www.omegapedal.com and www.rockpedal.com. I'm sure the new pedal will be just like the old stock pedal but with metal reinforcements.

I'm on PS3. Anyway no ones play Rock Band with me, I don't play Guitar that much and I'm kinda really good at the drums. That's why I'm getting a new set and RB2. So I can go online, by myself, with other people that are good.

Errm....2 weeks? I don't reckon there is a release date set at all yet.(for anything, bundle or single game) I doubt HMX would try and bully us into the bundle like that.

I'm guessing the new "additions and peripherals" could be aftermarket plug and play cymbals (optional for those of us that want them.) There will be a plug in the back of each Drum pad to plug the cymbals into.

JUst a thought. I heard it mentioned in the "No Cymbals Thread"

Coming from a near top 100 drummer: F*** yeah!

The only other thing I could ask for is that the set be tested so that it can actually do what the game wants you to. No more of this double hit/missed hit nonsense with the current kit, I want to be able to FC the entire drumroll in Working Man (Vault Vedition) and not even think twice about it!

I think you have a 75% chance that there wont be a guy in a room playing non stop for a week. BUT! You probably have a 90% chance that they considered putting a monkey in a room to play nonstop.

I canīt help but be a little bit worried since the reports from the Press-Meetings states that the reporters were only able to play on "Prototypes". If we have a release date in september I should think they would be able to present the real stuff by now. Hope we donīt get another batch of rushed periphals.

Sounds like it could be one of two other possibilities as well:
1) They don't have the full production models available for play, yet. This could include them being used for testing.
2) They want to unveil the official models at E3.

I'll reserve judgment but I am a little concerned about the quality of the kit since they're adding wireless, velocity sensitive pads and a reinforced pedal and only charging $10. more than the original kit. How much better can they be? I hope they are enormously better but it's a little worrisome. I'm sure they don't want the same nightmare that they had with the first kits so who knows.

I am just dying to see the Madcatz set.

How do you know they're only charging $10 more? Merchant placeholder price leaks are usually wrong (the RB1 price was thought to be $200 because of this). Don't trust it.

Also, just because they're using a better design for the drums, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be more expensive. Sometimes a design doesn't work, and you can get much better results for little or no extra cost.

I don't fully trust it but the RB1 price dropped, it did not increase. Amazon has a pre-order for these at 89.99. They got that price and SKU from someone. It appears Harmonix has not asked Amazon to remove that price or product like Madcatz did. I think there would be real backlash if people were pre-ordering and then getting email that the price has increased to $109.99 or something like that so if there was any doubt, Harmonix would request those pre-order pages be removed.

A better design is nice but one could argue that the current design is fine but the materials are subpar. Better materials usually translates to higher cost.

If they can design a sturdier better set, I'm all for it. I'm tired of dropped notes no matter what mod I use. I'll pay plenty for a solid kit that performs.

I was going to order the GoodWoods kit but with all these new ones coming out I decided to take a wait-and-see approach. I so hope they are much improved.

It's the "new peripherals" tidbit that had me most interested. I feel like the current design is damn near perfect but, like cleee said, a strong case can be made for them being made out of sub par materials. The thing can take a beating, but most people just can't get it into their heads they're playing on a toy. Hell, I broke my 1st gen drum kit (cracked pad) and I play with all the restraint in the world (stick tips never raise more than 2 inches from the surface). I was glad to find when I got my second kit, they realized you need more than 1/2 a rubber bands thickness of protective coating on the pad.

I don't know a single person who owns the game and wouldn't gladly fork over more money for a "premium" kit that you don't have to live in fear every hit might be the one that does it in, or every double bass kick won't be the one that snaps the pedal. I can't wait to see what E3 has in store, because it seems to me from everything I've seen RE: RB2, HMX has been paying attention, and they seem committed to doing things right.

"Amazon.com's price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and shipped. Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, video game, or software item, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you place your order and the release date."
-source (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/468502/pop-up/?tag=bookws-20#guarantee)

So the price can be announced higher, and anyone who preordered before Amazon changed the price would get them at $90. So Amazon is apparently pretty confident, but this is still nowhere near confirmation.

That said, it appears the $10 is the standard "MS Wireless tax" added to the cost of the RB1 drums.

I doubt the new drums are just a change in material. The RB1 drums are a (very) thin rubber layer over plastic. Most actual drum pads are a thick rubber pad. If they change to the more common pads, they will see a huge increase in durability, and the cost increase might be negligible enough to keep the price the same.

I agree with the wait and see. Monday is just a weekend away!

Please Let Me Buy An Official Cymbal That Plugs Into The Yellow Drum So I Can Put It To The Left Of The Snare

Please Please Please Please

Agreed, Also, let me move the snare to the front of the set..so I can put my hi-hat where the snare is.. actually, since I'm getting new drums in 2 month.. time to break out the dremmel!!!!

I've already added 3 cymbals to my EL set and I love it, even though the game doesn't chart for it, it's fun as hell. I can't wait until everyone gets to enjoy it as much as I do.

I like where they are going with this new set (based on what we know). It's almost going to be like a real set.. you can set it up however you want.

I predict that the snare will be moved, or movable to be more forward, like in front of where the yellow is. and that there will be a sensor port for all 4 drums and a 2nd bass pedal port.

check out the in game behind the scenes, they show a drumset with movable pads in it.

The drumming position is dynamic, though, right? On Orange Crush, RttH, etc., they switch the hi-hat and snare, so moving your drums around can kind of screw things up, I think.

Now how awesome would it be to have Robot Rock and Panama as songs in Rock Band 2?

I was disappointed in the quality of the instruments. However, I think Harmonix is going to have to put some real testing on the velocity sensitive sets. If the pad is not at a certain distance from the sensor, the whole velocity thing if going to be off.

Being so, I expect that the drums picking up notes will be much better. I'd also love to see some cymbal peripherals, but even when I saw the game annnounced I knew I was going to purchase it. Cymbals would only add to the excitment!

"Metal reinforced kick pedal" sounds nice and all, but if it's still the same design as the old pedal (that stupid spring), then it won't make playing it any easier, it just won't be as likely to break.

i'm not really worried about others' business, but it did cross my mind that this my unfortunately dissuade some folks from putting their money into a more "real" instrument than something they're likely to mostly use for a video game...
