How is that possible? I thought GH2's software and the Strat hardware were both based on the open controller standards? Am I missing something?

as i read the article, it seemed this was just for the xbox version. im still holding out hope the ps3 strat will work with the old GH games. i am a bit confused though why it wouldnt work on gh2 for xbox. gh3 yes, but gh2 gets a big ?

All I can figure is that Activision/RO had some road block in place for this.

GH and GHII were NOT designed on an open source model. RedOctane required blocks. That's why third party guitars that worked for GH didn't work for GHII.

So do you fully expect Activision to never allow a Strat for GH3?

Unless a patch comes out later I think an adapter (similar to the one third parties released) may be doable. It's really just a matter of making the software think it's running on the compatible hardware. GH's blocks were never that complex or efficient. I'd hoped they gave up by now. No such luck.

It almost sounds to me like redoctane/activision dont care what game you use the les paul for.But as soon as you want to play GH3 you have no choice{at least for ps3} but to use the les paul.At least 360 owners have the xplorer ,so you have more choices. So when RB comes out Ps3 owners are left short handed,we either wait untill the newyear to get a seconed strat, or go and buy GH3 for the les paul to complete your band. This is probably why redoctane/activision are leting the les paul be compatable with RB, so they can make another sale.

Interestingly...

Check the screen of legalese as the GH3 demo starts. It's an EULA which says you are not allowed to use non-Activision guitars on GH3. Lamesauce.

F*cking disgusting. RO should be ashamed, considering they built their f*cking empire on crappy 3rd party DDR pads!

I find it hard to believe Harmonix's past games won't support their new Stratocaster guitar, considering nothing has changed with their hardware.

This is about activision/redoctane,why do you think it was all hush hush till now.HMX probably would have been sued if they told you the couldn't follow the same config as GH2.They don't own the GH series remember, and to say any thing that may hurt GH3 sales would be very bad for HMX.At least that is my GUESS!
Are you really going to play GH2 after RB comes out? With the indepth game play off and online why would you bother. We all love the GH series but to go back to that after RB is released makes no sence.Maybe to play a song or to but other than that there is no reson to hang on to the GH series.

ahh well looks like GH2 has had it, I will have to bin the thing now.. shame because there are some tracks on it that i love to play.. i really hope HMX offer them as DLC and not in the rip off packs that Ro/Activision had for the 360.

It's simple. Harmonix is all about open source policy and doing what is best for the consumer. RedOctane and really Activision are about what's best for GHIII. They want Xbox owners to buy there new guitar. Since everyone is going to want two guitars for Co Op I bet some GHIII players were planning on waiting until Rock Band to get there second guitar, but now Activision is insuring that you are going to fork out another $39 to them on Sunday morning.

No kidding, that's where they plan to make their money.

Can't say I didn't expect this.

Isn't the profit margin for the disc itself higher than that of the peripherals? If that's the case why don't they let their games be compatible with as much hardware as possible?

Welp, I'll probably be owning 3 guitars for the 360, Xplorer, Les Paul and Stratocaster. Bass on Rock Band will just have to deal with playing an Xplorer.... C'mon, its Bass.....

I have a question which I feel is on the same subject as this. In the article it states: "The only drawback to (the Guitar Hero 2 Xplorer controller), aside from its wired status and button placement, is that you can not activate any of the extra guitar effects featured in Rock Band." Now by the phrase "extra guitar effects", what exactly are they talking about? Do they mean star power (or whatever it is in Rock Band) or do they mean the solo mode thing where you don't have to strum? Or both? If anyone knows, much appreciation. Because if the Xplorer doesn't function similarly to the Strat, looks like I'll be buying another Strat.

Guitar effects = wah-wah, echo, chorus, flange

One of the advantages of being wired, lile I mentioned before, is a third party like The Ant Commandos or something could and probably will put out a 360 adapter.

I hate RO for trying to monopolize GH but at the end of the day the dream is still very alive.

Yes, I am. As much as I can, in fact. I'm not going to play Rock Band any more than I do GH1, 2, 80s, or 3 (assuming GH1/2/80s will be compatible with the Strat, which is anything but certain at this point). I will, in fact, dispute your statement that to go back to GH makes no sense: to NOT go back from time to time makes no sense. The old games have songs that I love, and the reason I play these games is to play the songs I love. Why the hell would I not want to go back to the old game and play some of my favorites like Take it Off, Heat of the Moment, Sweet Child O' Mine?

Now if Harmonix were to release every single song that is in GH1/2/80s/3 (or at least all the ones I like, heh) as DLC for Rock Band, then you'd be right, I'd have no reason to play anything else. But this is a music game, it's driven by the songs, and the songs is what chooses what game I want to play. The band-based gameplay is completely secondary to me. Hell, I'll probably spend just as much time treating Rock Band as Guitar Hero 3a, and not playing with anyone else, as I will playing with others (guitar = <3, after all). By your logic, I should never play Rock Band unless I have other people to play with.

Seriously, I don't get why people hate on it. It's a fun, fast-paced song. I have a blast playing it, and the lyrics are hilarious.

Right there with you. Most people I've seen who don't like it are the 1337 GH players who think it's not hardcore enough. Oh, and the general disdain that so many people have for "chick" songs...

Chick songs aren't that bad but I kind of pity those guys because I do understand them. I get where they're coming from. Just I myself have no hatred for them.

I personally prefer female vocals.
