View Full Version : Iron Maiden and Aerosmith songs are covers? And other observations...

"Run to the Hills" is off the album "The Number of the Beast." Guitar Hero III has the master of the song "The Number of the Beast" in the game. Why wouldn't a master from a song off the same album be available for Rock Band?

Same scenario with the Aerosmith song. The album is "Get Your Wings" - with GHIII having the master track "Same Old Song and Dance" and Rock Band having a cover of "Train Kept A-Rollin'."

That just strikes me as peculiar. Any guesses as to why this is happening?

Also, what's with so many of the last minute songs being covers? 7 out of 45 isn't bad at all (in fact it's pretty awesome) for the main setlist, but 4 out of the last 7 or so songs announced being covers (in addition to sneaking in that Fall Out Boy track in those 7) seems like a weird way to finish off the setlist.

Speaking of last minute songs, now that they're all officially announced, can anyone from Harmonix let us know which 5 songs were the ones that got in at the last second? I'm wondering which stuff pushed the game up from 40 to 45 licensed songs. I'd love to know what we're getting now that we'd never see with the previous 40 licensed song setlist.

Lastly, 13 bonus songs? I know there's a lot of work that goes into each song for Rock Band, but the original Guitar Hero had 17 bonus tracks. And GHII for the PS2 had 24. I know it's quality over quantity, but the Harmonix in-house tracks usually turn out to be the best part of these games, and 13 seems pretty low compared to GH and GH2. I'm hoping at least part of the DLC planned comes from Harmonix groups.

I still can't wait to play this awesome game, but I gotta go ahead and question the way the PR is operating for RB.

Anyone else want to give some insight on these things or do you have other observations about the setlist?

P.S. I would've posted this in that full setlist topic, but it would just get lost among the hundreds of short "Fall Out Boy! Nooooo!11!1!" posts. I think asking these questions in a new topic is a better way to discuss some of these things.

Run to the Hills may be a cover, but I'll be too busy bleeding from my throat to notice. God bless you, Bruce Dickinson. <3

The Aerosmith thing may be a result of them working with Activision on GHIV.

58 total songs sounds great to me. I fully expect all 13 bonus songs to be boston based bands. and we already know maybe half of them are. I'm digging it.

It could be that the total number of songs is down do to size limitation? With all 4 tracks for each song. IDK.

Yeah, the total number is nice. I would've gladly traded a couple main setlist songs in for a couple more bonus songs though. Overall, it'll still be great.

Aerosmith and Iron Maiden were my two favorite HMX covers (next to their always spot on Black Sabbath covers) so no complaints here.

Both great albums. Hoping for DLC.

A likely reason.

I'm curious to know what the 5 last-minute licenses were.

Yeah, me too. I'll update the first post with that question.

true, since each track also has to have different parts for vocals, bass, drums. if it was space limitation, damn the equality with 360 and ps3. im sure the blu ray could have held more content! :D

The New Pornagraphers and The Outlaws get my vote. Although Green Grass and High Tides were rumored in every HMX game since before the original GH.

I would think each one of them were good enough to warrant taking a small hit in $$$ just to add them to the game.

I think the reason for Aerosmith and Iron Maiden being covers is probably due to the agents informing the band how popular the Guitar Hero games are, resulting in "Same Old Song and Dance" and "Number of the Beast" masters being allowed for GH3. Rock Band was probably left out of the picture because no one knows how successful the game will actually be, being a new game and all. Assuming the agents don't know about Rock Band being developed by the same guys that did the first Guitar Hero games (a mistake any non-gamer can make), they didn't ask for the masters that time. Anyone know what I mean?

The Aerosmith song is a cover in the first place anyway - as mentioned in the other thread, it's at least from 1956 - so that one doesn't bother me too much. I'm not wild about the covers, and I wouldn't pay for them as DLC unless there wee no masters available, but the cover-to-master ratio is pretty great overall.

There are about 10 other Aerosmith songs i would have liked to see before this one...

There are probably 20 Rolling Stones songs I wanted to see before Gimme Shelter but at the end of the day it's the Stones dammit.

.

Agreed, HMX nails them pretty well especially Black Sabbath/Ozzy stuff. I'm curious(scared) to hear GH3s version of Paranoid, lol.

i dont know if that makes me feel better. Its like the half assed it. If the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith are going to be in your game, you better make them powerhouses so you can sell your software. But sadly, it wasnt meant to be...

Hell even hardcore gamers make this mistake.

Gimme Shelter is a freakin' awesome song, perhaps one of the Stones' best. You honestly don't get much more of a powerhouse than that.

I don't know much about the Aerosmith song, but from the 30-second iTunes clip I can listen to without paying for it, it sounds rad as hell.

Gimme Shelter rocks, great guitar and vox

Train Kept a Rollin, classic Yardbirds song, covered beautifully by Aerosmith. Great blues song, good picks.

Fallout Boy? WHO THE F##K CARES, ITS ONE SONG NAME ONE SONG IN ANY OF THE GH GAMES THAT YOU HATE

Donnas Take it off GH1

MCR GH2

Half the songs on GH 80's

Who cares, with DLC every week? We can still speculate kids, thats alot of new songs and content coming this year. Don't worry about it, catfish?

Agh!! That's terrible. The drums are mixed really high - or maybe are different altogether. Lame vocals as well, of course. The only one I though HMX really dropped the ball on was The Stooges cover in GHII

See, I actually thought that was one of the better covers. Although, I suppose that's the thing about these types of covers--people always think that their favorite song was butchered in the transition. ;)

not to mention them having to keep reasonable licensing fees. and with metallica, iron maiden, the police and a few others it can get quite hefty.

No I actually think Harmonix did a very good bit of justice. I actually found the Wolfmother cover better than the original in some respects.

These...these are just terrible.

My prediction is that HMX ran out of cash to have them as masters. Train-Kept-A-Rollin' might be better off as a cover anyways

Definitely up there on my list of great songs I never thought I'd see in a video game.

But I think Masterx is probably right. Damn budget.

I love the Butthole Surfers, and I legitimately prefer the GHII cover version of Who Was in My Room Last Night - it's just a lot tighter and kicks a little harder, Generally, though, I'd rather just not have the song at all if the only choice is a cover version.
