I feel that that there are too many sub genres. You have Alternative rock, and then College, Indie, Grunge and other subs that go even it the pop range.. You have speed, death, Nu, doom, power, heavy, and a whole bunch of other types of metal. For Punk you got Art, Garage, Gothic, Hardcore, and other types of punk.

That frustrates me sometimes too. It gets really hectic when you are talking about classic rock. Which band is heavy metal, which is hard rock, which is prog, which is mellow, which is hair metal, which is blues? I think it is funny to see people argue over which bands are REAL metal. Sub-genres are okay, but too many of them is just too confusing!!

Absolutely agree 100%. It's almost diversification for the sake of it.

I honestly don't have a ****ing problem with it if people could just get the genres down right. It allows for comparing bands to other bands with ease and knowing how they play and whatnot. It's no different from genres of books or films.

The more music that is created, the more sub-genres we will need.

"Extreme Metal" is some of the worst of it...

A lot of these sub-genres are just a matter of opinion, especially the whole "which band is REAL metal" thing.
