Arsis is pretty damn amazing, they're one of the few bands left out there that are staying true to the old Gothenburg style...which is funny, cuz they aren't from Gothenburg. I still think Dark Tranquillity has an unrelenting grip on the Gothenburg scene tho (I would say In Flames, but they're moved too far from the scene to really be considered part of the Gothenburg movement anymore).
Another band (and really the only one that I think can touch Opeth in terms of making music really seem like an art form) is Agalloch, if you've never listened to them, check them out.
And if I base it on bands from live experiences, I'd have to say the best ones I've seen are Linkin Park(far and away the best concert I've ever been to), Slipknot, Machine Head, and Dimmu Borgir

You're right about LP, I kinda just started rambling off and kinda just said the best live bands I've seen and ignored the metal part.
Slipknot, on the other hand, I will always stand by classifying as metal.

Doesn't matter if you stand by them being metal, doesn't change the fact that numetal isn't and thus they're not.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Metal (in my mind) is a very broad term, and Slipknot does fit that bill. LP i'm skeptical of, largely because of Mikes association within it.
my favorite bands also probably would not fit your description of "Metal" because they arent as hard as the blaring noise that alot of bands are coming out with nowadays (i like my music has some form of a melody or at the very least a recognizable rythm)
Hammerfall definatly is my favorite metal band. behind them is Nightwish (thier a finnish band with a lead singer who does Opera). and third would probably be Motley Crue.-

I agree, needs some substance to it ya know. Pfft... Numetal. I love how you wnaks come up with these new categories just so your own music is over in the corner all by its dark little self. Metal...IS Metal my friend, call it what you wanna call it. I also giggle when I see people list bands that only them and their eyeliner trenchcoat wearin buddies ever listen to. Just a feeble attempt to be different and more hardcore than the next guy. You all sound like these momos that are sissy fightin over 360 and ps3 bein better than the other.
God forbid anyone mentions Metallica! No no....not Metallica or Megadeth, those guys are old and their new stuff sux!! And these bands you refer to as not metal, I can almost guaratee you yer buddies from Dark Portal Mushroom Haters are all sittin around there treehouse listenin to it.

Okay, you're just stupid at this point.
Metal isn't metal. For example, numetal is a term made by mainstream media to describe music that relies on rapped vocals, creepy samples, hardcore song structure, and more metallic guitars. It's a subgenre of hardcore, the media just sucks. It's the same for Metalcore (only metalcore's suffix actually works)
Also, we never came up with them. The media did in the 80s before I was born and the 90s when I was a baby. Possessed's 1985 release Seven Churches popularized the term Death Metal, Venom's 1982 release Black Metal popularized the term Black Metal, Metallica's Kill Em All warranted Thrash Metal, etc. etc.
In fact, the only genres invented since the 90s are genres like numetal. The original, and best, metalcore was invented in the 80s! GASP! The MEDIA ****ing made these terms, thanks. We just put them to good use.
Metallica? Megadeth? Awesome as hell bands. However, St. Anger and United Abominations suck (respectively).
Also, everyone I know who listens to the same music as me (namely thrash metal, black metal, death metal) doesn't like to be in a corner all by their dark little selves. In fact, I like hip hop. OMGWTFLOLBBQ! Yeah, I, a metalhead with a music taste darker than Satan himself, likes hip hop. I just like proper catagorization of genres. I also like Hardcore Punk, which nu'metal' is a part of. GASP!
If I wanted to be different, the last thing I would do is wear my normal clothes (for example, right now I'm wearing a crappy red T that says "Please don't interrupt me while I'm ignoring you", blue jeans, and stock church type socks) and listen to my music in private. I don't flaunt my music around like *******s like you because I don't ****ing need to. It's my music taste. In fact, out of respect for my parents, I listen to my music with the door closed, or through my iPod. I SURELY wouldn't do that if I wanted to be different.
They don't even know what I listen to, because they don't need to. I'm not trying to be different, I'm listening to what I like. In fact, the only CDs anyone has ever heard me listening to are Metallica's Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, and Psyche Origami's (OMGWTF RAP) The Standard.
I'll tell you this much: I'm more open than you, and 90% of people who claim to be ****ing open.
Good example is this, I'll name ALL the genres of music I like: Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, Power Metal, Heavy Metal, Groove Metal, Hardcore Punk, Sludge Metal, Doom Metal, Stoner Metal, Power Violence, Grindcore, Deathgrind, Noisegrind, Industrial Metal, Industrial Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, Punk Rock, Thrashcore Punk, Crossover Thrash, Hip Hop, Rap, Gangsta Rap, Hardcore Rap, Rapcore, Alternative Metal, Numetal, Metalcore, Gothenburg Metal (Melodeath), Speed Metal, Progressive Metal, Neoclassical Metal, Grunge, Deathcore Punk, Emocore, Stoner Rock, Jazz, Bebop, Classical, Baroque, Blues, Rock N Roll, Glam Rock, Gospel (!!!), Indie Rock, Garage Rock, Pop Rock, Acid Rock, Electronica, Folk Metal, Drone Doom, Symphonic Metal, and some Country.
I listed a ****ton of genres, most of which you've never heard because you won't get your head out of your ass and / or stop watching MTV.
In fact, the ONLY genre I don't like is Pop Punk. Know why? Because it can't exist. Punk was made to go against the mainstream, not embrace it, and Pop Punk completely ****s over that notion.
Also, you need to ****ing think before you open your mouth. Nowhere did I say Slipknot sucked, all Is said was they're not metal and you jump all over me for it. Simple fact: THEY'RE NOT. Here's another fact: MFKR and Slipknot are !!!KICK ASS!!! albums!
You sir, are a bloody disgrace.

correct me if i'm wrong bloodlust, but have you not gone on record before for calling slipknot just another Pop band and not worth your time?
and i never said you were necessarily wrong or that you didnt have a closed mind or any of that. you assumed WAY Too much with that and just used me as a target to launch your 16 year old anger out.
all i was trying to say was
1. genre fitting is purely subjective.
2. that i felt slipknot was a metal band
3. the bands that i happened to like the best
in my mind, any thing that uses the word or suffix of the word Metal, thusly is part of the larger Metal Band. Stoner Metal, Death Metal, Doom Metal, Religous Metal, NuMetal...whatever you wanna call it, its still friggin METAL.
I find it ironic that you get on my case for boasting my musical know-how and bragging rights by just listing the three metal bands i happened to like, and than you turn a sentance into a paragraph by going "oh well i listen to blah blah blah de****in blah music so stick it up your ass"
personally i dont care what you listen to, cause it isnt relevant to this discussion. and whats more i think your lieing (or at the least exagerrating), considering your quite good at trashing entire bands for being garbage just for bieng "pop" and yet you list Pop Rock in your genre list.
and for the record. the bands that i've listed, noone here has ever heard of because their from europe and get no coverage here in the states. in thier home turf, both Hammerfall and Nightwish are very popular.

You're missing something. This is a forum about a game. It's true, Slipknot isn't worth my time... IN THIS GAME. Nor are any of the other bands that I consider pop. It's not whether I like them or not. For example, I like Manowar, but they're not worth the time in THIS GAME.
Metal is not metal, Numetal has hardcore song structure and instrumentation. It's more like nucore. Also, like I give a **** what you think, I have ZERO reason to lie.

no ammount of psychology classes could get me to understand your train of thought.
1. How is Metal NOT Metal?
2. what makes a band "pop"? this is something im particurlarly interested in because Pop music as i've come to understand is usually focussed on singing, has a consistantly upbeat melody or rythm, and is laced with hooks, similar to Avril Lavine, or Michael Jackson, or Prince.
3. why is a "pop" band automatically disqualified from this game? i could understand it if you were going off something close to MY definition of Pop, but it doesnt seem to be like thats the case considering your calling Slipknot Pop.
4. how is it that you can listen to a "pop" song in your ipod or car stereo, but not play it in a game?
and for the record you have a perfectly good reason to lie. because in doing so it boosts your ego and makes yourself seem bigger and better than i am.

Heh, Am I sposed to be impressed cause you did a little research and came up with every genre name you can find? I never said I gave two ****s what you listen to. I said metal is metal, and it is. Of course theres different kinds and everyone has their own taste, but its all metal. I mean who really cares what category its in? If you like it you like it. And what "mainstream media" are you referring to? Stoner Metal? Power Violence? lol wtf?
Ya know its kewl if ya wanna come on the forums and prove how well versed you are in music "genres". Woopty ****. By you saying Slipknot isnt metal makes you lose all credibility.
I can agree with you on one thing even though I think you're a douche....St. Anger is the hugest steaming pile I have heard from ANY genre. ( Don't wanna label it METAL..no no..the genre police might get me!)

Oh man, Unearth and God Forbid would be fun as hell to play.
Can we cut down on the cursing here on the forums though? I'm ok with an F bomb now and then, even more than occasionally, but I don't think it is appropriate when the last two pages of this thread has been littered with the word. Try to keep some respect.
And I think genres and sub-genres are important to embrace. 'Metal' is MUCH to broad a term when trying to tell people what you are listening to or telling them what you like. there are so many different kinds. Opeth does not fit in the same place as Unearth does not fit in the same place of Slipknot. you can love one end of the spectrum and absolutely hate the other (numetal) trash. but it's all opinion and it's all taste.
but to blatantly disregard that there are such varying degrees of difference in them? that is just ignorance.

i acknowledge that there are differances between bands. however, i will go on record to say that all metal bands have more in common than they have differances.
when i talk about music, and genres or whatever, i usually start out broader and than work my way more specific. i know quite a few people, who cant stand Metal at all, so saying it was Power Metal, or Speed Metal, or whatever, doesnt help at all: they still dont like it.
and like i said before, genre is a subjective term. got at least one friend who will argue with me and say that Motley Crue is more hard rock than it is Metal. thats generally why i dont care about classifying bands.

If we're talking NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) I'd say Iron Maiden, Motorhead. If we're saying it in a really loose sense, Gn'R, if ya mean thrasher/heavy metal, Metallica (I know it's repetative, but I stand by it), and as for death metal..Children of Bodom

its music that you like, that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. music that you can mosh to, and music that you can fight to. it doesnt matter if one band sounds like another, or if one band does something new or different. its all metal, no one cares. it all depends on what you like.

I'd say COB is melodic death metal, but I'm no genre expert. I would, however, disagree that they're power metal...although I've never heard the term "extreme power metal," so I could be wrong. Whatev. I hate labeling genres, it's not worth the arguments it creates.
My opinion of the best metal bands:
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Hammerfall
Children of Bodom
Decapitated
Unearth
Nightrage
At The Gates
And the newer Darkest Hour and God Forbid stuff is pretty cool too.

I'd say COB is melodic death metal, but I'm no genre expert. I would, however, disagree that they're power metal...although I've never heard the term "extreme power metal," so I could be wrong. Whatev. I hate labeling genres, it's not worth the arguments it creates.
I'd agree with that. Maybe not for the latest album, but for Something Wild, Hatebreeder, Follow The Reaper and Hate Crew Deathroll, that's about right.

Doesn't matter if you stand by them being metal, doesn't change the fact that numetal isn't and thus they're not.
Because you are the deciding factor in who is metal and who is not....

You really seem to think a lot of yourself. It appears that because you can name a pile of genre's that you are more knowledgeable than the rest of us. Well, I can assure you that your just a pretender who seeks to validate him/herself by naming every quasi-metal genre known to man in an attempt to make yourself look smart. Guess what, you fail. True, St. Anger leaves much to be desired, but at the same time, United Abominations makes crap like Slipknot look like celluloid trash.
Whenever you come up with an original thought, let the rest of us know as everything you've posted thus far is just a pretentious attempt at being as you say, "open".

You've gotta be kidding me. You're just trying to make yourself look smart by listing a whole bunch of genres. I think I'd call you a bloody disgrace. And hardcore metal/metalcore (however you want to say it) is completely different from nu metal. It's not a subgenre of hardcore, it's a completely different genre.
Anyway, here are the metal bands I think are the best (of today).
August Burns Red
Darkest Hour
Unearth
Killswitch Engage (old and new)
Between The Buried And Me

Pantera hands down. Metallica had their day in the eighties, but Pantera stole their crown and only got better as time went on. Metallica just got worse. It's a travesty they're not in this game. Maybe they see it as selling out. Who knows.

1st off... i LOVE Pantera, more so than Metallica... BUT:
Metallica gave us 4 of the all time greatest albums in Metal History: Kill em all, Ride the Lightning Master of Puppets and Justice for all.
I would be hard pressed to say Pantera had three albums that did as much.. hell Pantera's two best albums are Vulgar and Cowboys.... and Cowboys is a stretch.
but still... i love pantera :)

I know A LOT of metal bands, and I've never even HEARD of any of those, except MAYBE death. >_>
For me, I'll go with my top few (and list what makes them great):
1 Iron Maiden (extremely influential)
2 Helloween (they invented Power Metal, but never reached wide success due to internal problems)
3 Motorhead (a widely respected band, fairly influential too)
4 Blind Guardian (just my personal preference - I like the Queen influence, I think they might be on the rise of popularity, because I keep meeting more and more fellow fans randomly)
5 Judas Priest (about as influencial as Iron Maiden, give or take a bit)

I KNEW someone would put Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden, KISS, and (apparently) Manowar (but there aren't many of them, so I have yet to meet one) have some of the most hardcore fans out there. Hahaha
I have to say I used to be pretty hardcore about them myself, but then I sort of drifted. I drift back into and out of them from time to time still.

Definetely Iron Maiden. Even if you don't like their style, there is no denying that they are flat out the most talented metal band ever (and likely in the top 3 in talent period, getting beaten by Rush and possibly Yes). Bruce Dickinson (the leading voice in metal), Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (perfected twin guitar-ism), Steve Harris (the best bassist ever. Period. And a fantastic song writer), and Clive Burr/Nicko McBrian (both of whom are in the upper echelon of drummers, Clive mostly because he invented his own drumming style). Iron Maiden can't be fought! Iron Maiden can't be stopped! So true.

This could really be split into two categories: British and American. American and British metal are two very different things. British metal is much more intricate, much more melodic, and so on. American metal is much heavier, much more powerful, and typically a damn bit faster. So it's tough to make a call on any band because an American or Brit can come up and make a perfectly good argument for their respective country's greatest metal band. On the American side, I'd probably go with Megadeth because they manage to play thrash metal without turning it into a pile of garbage (a la Slayer).

Megadeth may have stayed consistent, but they never made albums as good as Metallica's first four.
Plus, Dave Mustaine's vocals are plain annoying in a lot of songs.

please. metallica are a joke now. yes, everyone likes their first few albums, and no matter what crap they release now they will get plenty of air play but face it... United Abominations > St. Anger + Reload + Garage Inc + Load. plus i rate rust in peace over anything metallica have done hands down.
james has got a cooler sounding voice and i got nothing against kirk - but metallica are the most overrated metal band ever - and it annoys me when they can release a pile of dung and sell millions of copies just cos of the franchise that is.

The Power Metal category has only one Power Metal band and that would be Helloween. The other bands are great and are influences to the Power Metal bands but they can't be power metal. European Power Metal basically started in the 80's with I would say Helloween and some others right with them. Gamma Ray would have to be included in that list and if you don't know who Gamma Ray is then I would say don't make a power metal list.
