1. does the band leader have to be online for the band to play?

1 - Yes, the band leader has to be online.

2 - No, only one leader, but you can be the leader of 10 different bands and a member of 10 others.

the leader thing is kind of dumb, me and my friends got on at different times of day, one person coulnt really be on for everyone else.

The band leader only comes into play for BWT, and currently BWT is not available online. Quickplay is, but I don't think you need a leader for that.

They're working really hard on it. Expect a patch within the initial year.

It seems like it would be possible then for each to be a bandleader and a member of each other's bands so that one of you does not necessarily need to be on for your friends to play together in a band. I am not sure if this is possible, but I don't see why not.
