I like both, but got to go with Pearl Jam, if only for their live shows and longevity

I have to say Soundgarden considering Chris Cornell was in another band (Audioslave) which I really like.

This was kinda tough, but Pearl Jam comes out on top in the end, for me.

Alice In Chains Is The Definitive Grunge Band
Best band to come out of that scene.
Soundgarden being the second best. Went with Soundgarden.

I'm gonna have to go with Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder is pretty awesome, and I especially liked the Into the Wild soundtrack.

"Nirvana is The Beatles, Soundgarden is The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam are The Monkees."
I'm assuming you're making reference to this:
If Nirvana was the Beatles and Soundgarden was the Stones, Pearl Jam are the Monkees. A fabricated band made up to milk the pacific north west grunge cash cow. That’s actually an insult to the Monkees who had some pretty good songs. But you get the idea.
My distaste for Pearl Jam has abated over the last couple of years but my gall for the fans of the band still remains toxic. The band and its output has been mediocre at best yet the fans put them up there with some of the greats in the music world. And have you listened to “Jeremy” from 1991‘s Ten album? Not very good. Do you know what Soundgarden offered up in 1991? Badmotorfinger that’s what. “Rusty Cage” blows away anything PJ has done in its entire career. And which one is considered the better band by white dudes in their 30’s? That’s the sole definition of overrated.
I'll do my best to address most of the points this person was trying to make.
Fabricated band? Ten debuted before Nevermind and Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Mike McCready had been part of the northwest scene for years before Andy Wood died of a heroin overdose. Yes, Pearl Jam as an entity including Eddie Vedder was late to the party, but there's nothing even close to fabricated about this band. Remember, the Monkees are the equivalent to N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys; don't you dare make such a comparison to one of the greatest American bands over the past two decades.
The author of the aforementioned quote says that Pearl Jam's output has been mediocre at best, but he only makes reference to "Jeremy", which is probably the most hated song by Pearl Jam fans everywhere. If he wants to call Binaural and Riot Act mediocre then I might let it slide. However, I draw the line when it comes to Vitalogy, Vs., and No Code; these albums contain great rock music from top to bottom.
There's nothing wrong with Soundgarden in any sense, but I'm wondering why they're equated to The Rolling Stones. Anyone care to help me out witthis one? Nirvana is The Beatles? I'll save the suicide/homicide jokes and just call that the most absurd things I've ever heard.
As for this poll, Pearl Jam is the victor because of their lengthy live performances and their musical variety (See "Spin the Black Circle", "Red Mosquito", and "W.M.A." for clarification).

No flaming here. You hit the nail right on the head, my friend.

Soundgarden wins. For a couple reasons. Primarily because Chris Cornell is my vocalist idol and biggest vocal influence. But also because Soundgarden had many songs where they would be going crazy with guitar licks and then bust out a Black Sabbath-esque groove (see songs such as "Rusty Cage"). Pearl Jam is still very good, but I haven't heard much of them outside of their GH offerings ("Even Flow", "Life Wasted").

Don't you think you're a little biased then? I'm not trying to sway your opinion; Soundgarden was an extremely solid band and you're right to dig Chris Cornell. However, do yourself a favor and get a copy of Vs. when you can. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the sound Pearl Jam offers up.
Then again, you might really enjoy Temple of the Dog if you haven't heard them by now. Chris Cornell + every current member of Pearl Jam including Eddie Vedder. Solid album.

Trust me, I know that I'm biased. As soon as I get the cash (saving for a 300W Line 6 amp and an Ibanez BTB575 at the moment) I'll definitely pick up some Pearl Jam stuff. I've only recently started digging in to grunge (thank Audioslave for that), and if the Jam is one of the big four grunge, I have to check 'em out sooner or later.

^You should listen to Ten. Great album. That's about it though.
Temple Of The Dog was pretty damn awesome, but I haven't really listened to the whole album(Since I haven't had my hands on it)

I would strongly suggest you get something else besides Line 6. The ones that I've used usually break easily, and lose sound quality when you blast it(Since the sound is processed via digital bullcrap, it starts to sound like a bad mp3.). What is your price range? I would strongly suggest that if you're saving up for a good amp, get an Ampeg, or that yellow one, I forget what they're called. They're good amps.

Well, aren't you just full of advice today? Money is not really an object, but I don't want to go any bigger than 300W and it needs to be a combo. I've heard good and bad about Ampeg, and I know about those yellow/orange amps, but I don't know if they make combos of those.

Oh they make combos. They're called Mark Amps, I think, but they're pretty expensive, like 600 bucks for the amp. I hooked up this fretless bass to it, and it sounded like heaven....well the fretless just ruled so much. I just read up that an Ampeg amp, 220 watts is out for about 400 bucks over at Guitar Center. Trust me, you're going to be loud with that thing if you practice with buddies, even if they have half stacks.(Well probably not that much.)
