Death Sentence
Cube
Sunshine
Let's start with Death Sentence. For those unfamiliar with this film (I'm sure there are many), it features a pissed-off Kevin Bacon avenging the death of his son. One thing leads to another and the story (and bodycount) escalates.
The film is very well shot and directed (same person as Saw, there's even a shot that features the puppet!). The use of filters bring realism and grittyness to the film. The film is also pretty believable, sure there's a scene (involves a car) near the end that's a little hard to take, but the prior and latter scene's believability and thrilling nature make up for it. Kevin Bacon delivers a good performence, and John Goodman is hilariously brilliant, but is only in three scenes; two of which are only a minute or so long. Another thing I like about this film is it's too close to home. The directorial decision at the beggining of the film really draws you in, and makes you care for the characters.
The film is a little short, the police involvement is a little lacking, and the ending leaves you to assume (which is a good thing in this instance IMO).
It is definatly worth seeing, rent this when it comes out (November or December).
Next is Cube.
For those unfamiliar with Cube, it's a Canadian film which features 6 (? forgot already) people stuck in a giant cube consisting of smaller cubes (think rubix just a hell of a lot bigger). It just so turns out that every other cube is booby-trapped and there is only one exit. There are however numerical codes for each room that give hints to their safety, as well as another twist to the puzzle that makes everything a little harder
I caught Cube Zero on TV a few months back, and while I still enjoyed it; I found nearly every death in it to be over-gorrified and unbelievable, and it didn't help that I didn't give a **** about any of the characters. The original is much, much better. The characters are great, and each have their own purpose in the story. The acting isn't amazing, but it doesn't need to be with such a fantastic idea for a film. This film doesn't rely too heavily on the booby-traps themselves for entertainment, paranoia and mistrust also plays a big part in it.
This movie is also very mysterious, not a lot about the cube itself is said, only one character knows anything about it; and it still isn't enough to give any real motive for it to exist. Even though everyone for sure gets the just of the ending, there are still a hell of a lot of questions to be answered. Maybe theyre answered in HyperCube, the sequel.
Dispite it's small budget, this film is great. If you enjoy films like Saw, and haven't seen it. Get the **** off your computer and go buy it. For everyone else, it's still worth seeing.
Lastly, Sunshine
Sunshine takes place in the future. The sun is going out and a team (the second one, the first team failed 7 years ago) is sent out to restart it via a big implosion thingymabobber. A big plot point (which I won't spoil) leaves a decision to be made among the crew, and as you can guess, it all goes to ****.
The film has great special effects, some of the coolest I've seen. Cillian Murphy (of 28 Days Later fame) puts in a good performance as the physicist on board, other actors include the human torch, that FBI guy from Live Free and Die Hard, as well as the chick from Crouching Tiger. No huge names here, but good actors nonetheless.
Although the film has a big budget and some noticable actors, it screams cult-classic with it's strange ending and directorial decisions. Of the three movies I saw today, this would be my least favorite, but it is still very enjoyable.
Worth watching for the sci-fi fans.
Please write your own reviews for the latest films you saw. I work at a video store, and I'm running out of stuff to suggest. :)
