I have to add Killing Joke, the most influential band that never got mainstream success (a couple of minor hits in the UK).
- Martin (Youth) Glover, the original and current bassist, is one of the many producers on the new Guns and Roses album Chinese Demcracy. He produced Tom Jones, The Orb, Paul McCartney, The Verve. From wiki: He also produced and remixed for other bands including Primal Scream, Embrace, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Art of Noise, Crowded House, Zoe, P.M. Dawn, Yazoo, Erasure, U2, Bananarama, INXS, James, Wet Wet Wet, Depeche Mode, The Shamen, Texas and Gravity Kills.
- Jaz Coleman (Keyboards, vocals, lyrics) is the composer in residence for the European Union.
- Geordie Walker (guitar): Although he never plays solos, he has been praised for his unique style by the likes of Edward Van Halen and Jimmy Page.
- Paul Raven (RIP) was the latest bassist for Ministry
- Metallica still play their cover of Killing Joke's Wait in concert
- Dave Grohl *begged* to play drums on all tracks of their 2003 album after they approached him to play drums on just one.
- Kurt Cobain used to send them fan mail, and stole the guitar riff from Eighties for Come as You Are
- From wiki: influenced many later bands, such as Nirvana, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Napalm Death, Big Black, Tool, Prong, Metallica, Primus, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Faith No More and Korn, all of whom have at some point cited some debt of gratitude to 'The Joke'.
- Geordie Walker (guitar), Paul Raven (bass), and Paul Ferguson (drums) were earliest members of Pigface, the industrial mega-band that includes founders Martin Atkins (Killing Joke, Ministry, PIL) and Bill Rieflin (KMFDM, Ministry, REM), Trent Reznor, Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Mike Bishop (GWAR), Danny Carey (Tool), Flea (Chili Peppers), Black Francis (Pixies),

You can remove Megadeth, which is really an outlier on your list. They'd be on there if the list was the top 20 metal bands, maybe, but it's not.
Add to your list:
The Eagles (even if you don't like them, they're one of the best selling bands of all time, and still sell out stadiums wherever they go).
Aerosmith
Fleetwood Mac
Steely Dan
Dire Straits
Foreigner
Supertramp
Journey
The Band
Deep Purple
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Allman Brothers
REM
The Velvet Underground
The Guess Who
The Kinks
Bob Marley and the Wailers
The Sex Pistols
Cream
Jane's Addiction
The Yardbirds
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
The White Stripes
Steppenwolf
Foo Fighters
The Black Crowes
Green Day
The Beach Boys
Jefferson Airplane
Chicago
Michael Jackson ("Beat it" would be a fine addition to the game)
The Bee Gees
Madonna
Heart
Electric Light Orchestra
Genesis
Bryan Adams
Santana
Eminem
Meat Loaf
And if you're going to include Bruce Springsteen, you've got to add Billy Joel, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie.

Well there are too many to count.
I think that the best way of doing this is be listing all the bands on the Rockband platform (RB1, DLC and RB2) that count as a Who's Who. And then examine the list to see if it is very good.
How do you propose qualifing a band as a Who's Who? By record sales, influence, Longevity? Lots of possible qualifiers.....
I will leave this thread up to you to figure out... my head hurts already!

yeah, i agree that the very idea of trying to come up with a "who's who" list is nearly nauseating. i'm all for making my own personal lists of favorite songs and artists, but trying to include the general public's tastes and in the equation is just too much... plus, rock has been around for a long time and has spread all over the world... it's just too much of a weight to bear in my opinion.

I think Coheed and Cambria deserve a spot. They may not be mainstream and what not, but they have definitely broken the mold that has been formed by modern rock, and I think that says something. Yeah, they do have a few mainstream sounding songs (read: mainly their singles) but most of their songs follow a progressive/hard rock track. They experiment with the inclusion of other instruments and basically just try to create great music, not music that is generic. Like them or not, you can't deny that they have a certain uniqueness to them. If you've only ever heard the RB songs, you need to give some of their other stuff a chance before passing judgement; they have much better songs than Welcome Home and Ten Speed. So, all that being said, I think they deserve a spot on the list.

I'm pretty sure I've read through every post. I am left with only one question, Where in God's good name is Dylan? Sure, he's not technically a band, but we're talking about a man who wrote what is widely considered the greatest rock and roll song of all time. Come on!

Why is it funny? I mean, it's very 90's, but other than that most of those bands rightfully dominated the 90's rock scene.

this list is the one that makes the most sense. in terms of influence, longevity, albums sold and flat out name recognition, this is the list that we should go buy, with some minor changes.

I would concede, although I can't stand thrash metal, that Metallica be on that list. I would also put Cream and Deep Purple on there, as they had some of the earliest influenes on the heavy metal genres and they've influenced a plethora of bands through history.
