Yep. Woke up, went and picked up GH3 today. Went through it on Expert, stopping twice to do my college paper. Finally, temptation took over and I just had to beat the dmn game, TONIGHT. I wasn't settling for anything less.
By the last tier, my left hand was aching like a fothermucker. I struggled through the battle against Lou (since it's not fair in the least), and got past it. Then, Dragonforce appears.
Took me 30 tries to get past the beginning, and three actual runs at the whole song.
I failed once at 70%, and again at 81%. Got it the third time.
I think my hand may be permanently crippled because of this game.
This is the "I beat Through the Fire and Flames" club thread. So...if you have, or are currently trying...this is the place to post your angst or success.
and don't flame me, guys. I think GH3 is pretty rad, but I'm anticipating Rock Band about 10X more than I was this game. I just thought I'd start a thread about this.

I haven't beaten it yet... the best I've done was 4% :(
I just can't get past the darn intro for the life of me... it seems like it just fails you so fast because I tried it in practice and got 67% on the intro and 98% on slow speed...
Any tips anyone??

My only tip to you is "DON'T GIVE UP." You know that anger that hits you when you realize how unfair Neversoft is? Use it to keep you going. No matter how bad your hand hurts, vow to beat that dmn song.
Practice the "they're hammer ons" part over, and over, and over in practice mode on SLOW. Muscle memory will kick in, and more and more you'll find yourself able to keep up with the pace of the song when played at full speed. It doesn't have to be perfect, just don't lose your place and stop. If you learn to do it perfect, more power to ya. I sure as hell can't.

My hand doesn't reach green to orange without substantial effort, so I bomb the intro as soon as orange gets introduced.
It's such a stupid way to open a song given you have no star power and no rock meter. That section is way overcharted.

It's not so much "waiting" for it to kick in, but it does take time. If you practice the intro at least 30 times in a row, your fingers will have the pattern somewhat memorized. From then on, the more you do it the better you'll get at it.

Actually the song is a hundred times worse on lower difficulties. For example on hard, they take out 1/2 the solo notes, but make you strum them all. It becomes a 7 minute strumfest a la Six from GH2.

Muscle memory? Okay I'll give it a shot. I liked how they let you play TTF&F the very first time, it was a cool idea and nice implementation of the neversoft team. I laughed :P

Oh, you mean just like the last 3 tiers on Hard?
It it more than a small irk that the HOPO's are determined differently in GH3, the past formulas don't work. It seems that rather than the system determining which notes can b HOPO'd based on distance relative to the beat, it's now determined as part of the chart. It's a really hard habit for me to break, as I'm used to seeing the note I need to strum, then being able to eye which notes follow that I can get away with HOPO'ing, allowing me to focus more on the notes and making sure I'm hitting the right buttons. Now I've got to pay more attention to the tops of the notes to see when I need to strum again, and I end up screwing up more, as my hands are going all over the place rather than keeping the discipline I'd picked up in the last 3 iterations of the game.

Yea I beat it, the beginning is a *****, and on the whole song scale i only failed once at 85% because i accidentally activated star power at the "whooaawhoooaawhoaa" part of the song.
ive beaten it a couple of times now, i think my best percent so far is 87%

I know exactly what you're saying. It's practically GH1 style charts where you're strumming everything because you can't trust the ho-po's.
(Except for the ones after a 20 second sustain... thank GOODNESS they added those! )

lmao. Yeah, I saw those a few times and uttered "WTF?" It's gotten to the point where I just shake my head and keep going. Though not too hard, or else I'll end up activating star power. And possibly the video studder.

The achievement says "Activate Star Power 3 times on Through the Fire and Flames on Expert".
To me that says you just need to use SP 3 times somewhere in the song. It doesn't say ONLY 3 times or MAXIMUM of 3 times. It doesn't even say you need to finish the song.
Am I missing something?

Hmm wow. I don't do so great with HOPO's (on GH). So for me, everytime I play it, it is a 7-8 minute strumfest. Surprisingly though, it doesn't bother me at all.

I just attempted to do the 3 star power achievement on dragon force.
Apparently i activated star power 4 times, passed the song, but i didn't get the achievement
I haven't tried it again, but since i didnt' get the achievement the way i did it, im pretty sure you have to activate starpower exactly 3 times
I will confirm this once i do it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I BEAT IT!
So, I won a Wii copy of GH3 in a competition at the midnight release, played a song, then started career in the morning and I've been practicing ever since I beat the game yesterday at like 4:00 PM; before dinner, after dinner, after my shower, then at 2:00AM until I got yelled at by my parents, and even in school; yes, I brought it to school like I do with GH2 every week to entertain. So yeah, I got home from a football game at my school like an hour ago and got on the computer only to see this thread and it made me just go to my room and practice more. So I went through the usual... tried it on quick play a few times, got sick of failing 0, 1, 2% into the song, so went to practice mode and aced it on slow, then tried it full speed and still didn't get it. Then, I just didn't care anymore, so I went back to quick play and tried it over, and over and over again until finally, for some odd, strange, bizzare reason, I got past the intro and from there, like I knew it'd be, it was all easy(er) until the end, yet, unfortunetly, I think I've lost any bit of feeling in my left hand. Ah well, it was worth it, I guess.
In then end, 82%. Not bad. I got 80% on my practice mode full song run. So, yeah, finally beat it and I'm lovin' this thread dude.:D

Tormented One: This is the kind of thing that pisses me off about GHIII, Herman and Sam don't even frickin PLAY the intro live. Hell, they can barely play the rest of the song.
This is a BAD chart. Much like the One chart and Raining Blood charts.
And Disturbed and Slipknot did not deserve to be in this game.
Just thought I'd throw that in.

I'm pretty sure you can't fail it while the credits are rolling. I beat it on Hard last night, and wasn't expecting a song to pop up, and consequently played it like crap (being in actual physical pain from playing barefoot on a hardwood floor for five hours didn't help either). It still went all the way to the end. I replayed it on Hard afterwards and did quite a bit better on it and still only three starred it. Pretty sure I would've failed it during the credits if it was possible.

That song was a lot more forgiving than that stupid Raining Blood one.
And for those that can't handle the intro on one hand: use two. It took me like maybe 20 attempts to get my hands synched, but now I can full combo the intro every other time.

I havent beaten the sone yet but i get 86% throug it, always win it in pro face off with about a 360K score and 200 not streak, but to get through the intro, if you hae a friend, or even a piece of tape, tape down or get held the green button throughout the intro and strum on the colored notes. if you have tape you can keep it there until you reach the part with no notes and then it goes to a GY chord. That is the way i founf helps. you guys can add me and play me if you want, my gamertag is xXxB DubxXx

My fiance just booted GHIII up for the first time in a while (with two jobs he hasn't had much time to do anything), and started up TTFAF and said to me "Babe, I want to know if there's anything even close to this in Rock Band." (he doesn't play it because he "hates the guitar") and failed it 10 seconds after it got crazy (as usual, though he got through it on hard). I of course had to explain to him that Rock Band's songs are designed to be challenging, but not f***ing insane. I mean, right now he's trying to get through Cliffs of Dover, and is constantly repeating the song because he misses a star power and needs that to get through the opening, which is getting on my nerves (and by the the time this posts he'll have finally given up, yay!).
BTW I've beaten TTFAF on easy. lol, no challenge there! I usually play on medium, though so it was one step down.
EDIT: BTW after showing him The Escapist video he came to an agreeance with me, because ironically he's been playing on Expert forever, and GHIII caused him to move down to Hard due to its sheer insanity.

Last time I played it (Expert of course) I got 76% of the notes in practice. My attempt on a graded (failable) run was really quickly at 1-2%. The intro looks impossible but I have a feeling there's a trick to it.
It's a stupid-ridiculous note chart for sure, that's kinda the point. Calling TTtFaF unrealstic is like calling Disney's Pinocchio an inaccurate documentary on marionettes, i.e. missing the point.
