View Full Version : Question for Guitarists who've played the demo?

I hate to just keep beating on this dead horse, but I'm one of the seemingly few people overall who can't play GH3 because of the new strum sensitivity. Nutshell version for those who haven't seen this in other threads: When playing it, my hand looks like I'm holding a pick (because I play real guitar and thats what comes natural!), and I strum with my index finger like I would a guitar. Others play with a pick. GH3 registers this almost always as a quick double strum, and streaks (as well as fun!) are not possible.

This was a shock when I tried the GH3 demo (why fix something that ain't broken!?), and now I'm very very nervous that the style that lead me to such glory and worked perfectly for me with GH1, GH2 and 80's will render RB unplayable. I HIGHLY doubt that Harmonix tweaked thier own GH code, but I just want confirmation that I can rest easy and know that Rock Band will let me keep on playing like I always have.

So - if anyone like me who found that GH3 WASN'T allowing them to play the same way they played GH2 has gone out and tried Rock Band, PLEASE let me know! I'd really appreciate it!

I have only played one song on Rock Band, and I was on bass. So take that for what it's worth, but I was able to strum like I had a pick (only did it to test if I could) and I was also able to keep my middle finger pressed firmly under the strum bar and fling my index finger back up at the strum bar, for a realistic bass feel (Flea Style).

Also, I have GH3 and notice the same issue you do. I have the Les Paul and notice if I strum pick-style on the far right edge of the strum bar it will work virtually flawless, there are a few situations were it's caused me to miss 1-4 notes throughout a whole song, but not too often.

I've played guitar for 10 years, and I find the most natural technique for me is squeezing the strum bar like a pick between thumb and index finger. I havn't tried the demo yet so I dont' know if it feels the same or not.

I had the same problem with the GH3 demo (but the Les Paul fixes it). The strat did not double strum even once. I really tried to get it to, too.

I just tried the strat at a demo today. I think I have a similar style as you (never held a real pick so I can't say for certain) and I was able to strum just fine and dandy.

I play the same way and hated the GH3 demo because of it. I hate playing with my thumb, it feels like I'm using a controller and not a guitar. Hopefully the Les Paul fixes it (the box arrived this morning and is sitting on my desk and imploring me to leave work early) and the Strats don't suffer from it. Although since my Xplorer works perfectly fine in GH2, I'm thinking it's a software, not a hardware, problem.

Played the demo today, everything was fine, and I hold the bar similar to a pick as well. Of course, I really haven't been having any issues with the X-Plorer in GH3 with the same technique.

One thing that does throw me off in RB though is there is no click. I find that I unconsciously listen for the click to make sure I'm strumming along with the correct beat. So it's definitely something I'll need to get used to.

It seems like I'm the only one, but I'm psyched that the strum bar doesn't click anymore - when playing with other people on anything harder than Medium the clicking when they were off was loud enough to throw me off the beat too.
