View Full Version : Question- Double Bass?

Tormented One: I have a question. Ok, so I was looking through the confirmed songs and one thing I've been wondering a lot about is how the hell is the drummer going to do double bass? Might there be a planned add-on for this? Double bass is a very important part of a metal drum kit. One has double bass in it. Maybe this part will just go to one of the drum heads? o.O I will be very disappointed if not a lot of metal (especially newer stuff like Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage) doesn't make it simply because there is no double bass.
Kyidro: Im letting my friend use my accout...becuase he freakin lazy...no proper engrish is left for him

This has been taken up before.
Wouldn't expect any metal. I mean you can't force the singer to scream his lungs out, and most Metal drums using double bass would be too difficult for the average player.
Though it could work as DLC, with a warning-sign or something.

Tormented One: But like I said. One has double bass in it already. Last time I checked, Metallica is metal. Judas Priest songs could be another issue.

Hmm, you're right at that point...
Okay, I'll change my reply to this:
Don't expect Lamb Of God or Killswitch Engage, mostly because of the screaming.
I don't know how they'll solve the double bass in One, maybe they'll skip every second note, or you'll simply have to play it with one pedal? You can always play two-footed on a one-foot pedal, although it's very clumsy.

HA! Priceless.
This ain't happening any time soon. Not in June when people kept bringing it up, not in July, August, September, October, or even November.
In the words of Lamb of God: Lay this to rest.
I (being, you know, a drummer and all) can see them working it out using one pedal easy. Won't be as real or anything but really after adding another bass you might as well be giving out e-drums.

Is this a serious question?
That was announced a week ago. But don't worry, they'll patch it into the game in the very near future they said.

Based on the current set list, I don't think HMX has the balls to put in any real metal. Metal was kind of scarce in their previous games. But from what I understand, the bass pedal is detachable so it's possible they could sell a seprate double bass pedal somewhere down the line, and of course release a pack of songs as DLC that would allow you to utilize the double bass pedal. "Pedal to the metal" song pack sound good anyone?

I think screaming would be okay as downloadable content.
The only problem I see is the mic not really liking it much and it's not really picking up well in the game.

I would love double bass... It's my only real dream... but I only see it as DLC

This thread has been hijacked into 4 different topics, it's going no where lol.
Bottom line, maaaybe an addon in the future, and possibly metal songs for DLC, but don't expect Cannibal Corpse or something.

Too bad One isn't in Rockband. Does Enter Sandman have double bass?
Dabog666

Nope, no double bass in enter sandman.
Anyway, I don't think HMX would allow double bass to be done on one single pedal, at the risk of foot strain or damage etc. (Sounds odd but I guess it could happen) On the other hand, it sounds plausible that they would just map every second double bass note.

from what I've seen we'll be able to rig up a second pedal. However like others said no songs will be mapped for double bass thus making it sort of half functional.

I thought this would end. But double bass could easily be done with 1 pedal:
You hit the pedal, it registers twice only where they program it to. For instance, that middle break part in One where this is constant double bass.
Only one bar will show up to hit, but you'll hear the double bass.

This is exactly how it's going to be handled. Just pretend that instead of having a double bass pedal, you have a "cheater pedal" that hits when you push down and when you pull up. :)

Yeah, but there's some people who would prefer a second pedal at some future date. *raises hand*
There's no reason why in the future there can not be metal as dlc as well as an expansion pedal. It would only make the game much more diverse as well as fun for those out there who enjoy these things.

anybody know for sure about this double bass question? this is my first post, and I signed up to find about this question specifically. Do any of the dev team come on here at all and answer questions?

I don't believe any of the developers have confirmed that they will be supporting double bass. Seeing as though it would be completely easy to support, since they could begin to sell an expansion pedal with a simple y-splitter, I wouldn't put it past them to eventually support it. I'm guessing it might take at least a couple months if not more though. I personally will be modding double bass in so I can have some more fun with the free-form fills and ending jams, etc. Watch the forums after launch for possibly some of my mod experimentation threads.

I like the Drummania approach to this issue, which goes "har. har. let's make you play it with one pedal". viz. Arch Enemy by Nemesis, 200bpm. owie, goes my foot.

the idea of having you play every other beat sounds like the most likely (same idea as one stroke counting as 2 hits)
but im 99% sure there will be metal dlc beucase if there isnt it will let down ALOT of people ( ME!!!!!!!!!) the only issue i can think of is will the mic pic up a screem well. but if the mic becomes a huge issue they could just make the vocals non playable
but one way or another i dont care how they make it work but put some CANNIBAL CORPSE IN PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont see it happening... even though i would love to, it's just not do-able for everybody.. double bass is, and drummers will confirm this, quite a struggle if you are starting out with it.
Also, check the list of songs.. as far as i know, no double bass songs in there.
And in terms of metal, metallica is in there, but with a song that has no double bass in it... i would not expect "one" to be in rockband, i would expect the easier songs from the black album with no double bass.
And like Marty said, IF they add songs with double bass in it (please let it be fear factory) then you would probably do half the work, letting the kick pedal register a one kick you hit and translate that in two kicks.

The issue at hand is charting the notes. If you add an "optional" double bass pedal and actually charted the bass notes at the proper speed, then the note charts would be impossible to play with the default controller.
Adding a double bass at this time would segment the Rock Band players into two markets, with and without, and DLC would only be able to properly target one of those markets.
It's just not going to happen, not in the short or medium term, anyway. What the future may bring is unknown, perhaps we'll see expansion packs that are "Country Band", "Metal Band", "Pop Band". Then they could include a double bass pedal and note charts that are targeted specifically to the metal fan base.
Short of something like that, most of these discussions about double bass are pointless.

There are metal bands that dont use double bass, so its not impossible for metal to be in the game, just certain bands and songs.
At least we'll see Iron Maiden, as they have never used double bass, well at least Nicko hasnt, except on one song, Face in the Sand (which Nicko refuses to play live - he hates double bass finds it "undrummer-ish").
You dont have to do any programming to make one bass note sound like 2, you merely just only show one note on screen to play and not change the sound. (like making the note charts on easy for guitar hero - one note plays many in the real song.)

Well that issue I think would be solved with a double bass setting that would display the extra double bass notes for those who have it or a double bass, full or original mode, above expert would work as well. It's possible that the presence of an expansion pedal could not be detected so this would be needed. The fact of the matter is that no one knows exactly how the game is built or has seen the code except for the people actually working on it. They are the only people that would know if any sort of option is possible at any time. So those people who like to speak as though they know what can't be done with the game need to back off.
I completely understand the people who think it won't be any time soon. Since the bundle doesn't come with 2 pedals, then it can be assumed that there is no double bass, and because it doesn't have it at launch then releasing an expansion too soon, especially something like double bass, may not be the best decision. I'm all for it though. I'm fine listening to people complaining all the time about how it's too hard or that it's not fair because they don't have the money to buy another pedal. Those people just don't understand the words "difficulty setting" and "optional".

Well, true. But the game's already gold. There is no option for double or single bass drum. I guess I missed the point of the thread or something.

I'm sure someone already said this, but this is a -game- that is supposed to simplify the experience of performing with one of these instruments. I'm sure there will be metal DLC at some point and I'm also pretty sure that we won't be seeing support for 2 bass pedals any time soon.
It might not be that much work technially to make it happen, but I don't think the return on that work would be enough to justify it, when you can get an almost identical experience that will be accessible to everyone by just having note charts that register a double bass hit with only 1 note or whatever.

I'm shure that harmonix has their hands full right now with downloadable content, the launch, getting individual instruments ready for retail, and getting ready for the inevitable bugs that will be found after launch. They've been hard at work on this game and designing 3 new instruments and they may have already found a way to solve this prolblem already. Let's get the game before we start picking apart what it doesn't have. Let's be greatful we can play drums at all.

Of note, we have countless metal fans asking for a double bass... but no one seems to have a problem with the lack of a high hat pedal. A high hat pedal is used by nearly every drummer, not just a specific genre.
The point mentioned above is clear. It's a game version of drumming, and doesn't need a control surface for every thing that's truly in a drum kit in order to be fun.
However, let it be known that I will be the first in line for a giant gong controller to place behind me while drumming.

And you know, they should make the guitar have 6 strum bars, because a real guitar has 6 strings, and more fret buttons, like how many a real guitar has, let alone 6 buttons for each fret to represent each string, then it'll be more accurate, otherwords, its just wrong.

But now that they are releasing the "Metallica Pack" you need double bass.
You cant play that pack with 1 bass pedal its like impossible. Someway of simulating actual drumming. psh. Untill i see video on youtube i just cant go ahead and buy it, =[ which sucks.

Why are we bumping an old thread on a dead-horse topic?
I hope everyone gets their ass kicked by the difficulty of the Metallica pack. That way they will realize the folly of asking for an even harder set of drumming mechanics.
