View Full Version : General Development Question: Max Controllers?

Rather than a specific question about Rock Band (since I'm certain you'll announce any and all rock band news as soon as you are allowed to), I have a question regarding the potential of development on the various consoles.Particularly, is there a maximum number of controllers possible on any of the target platforms? While Rock Band clearly is targeted at four controllers and will--no doubt--be the most epic arrival our living rooms have ever known, it's not hard to imagine another band configurations involving more guitars (bass and rhythm) or additional instruments (keyboards, turntables, theremin?)My curiousity, directed towards your developers, ponders if this is possible with the current generation of consoles. Or specifically:Is there a hardware limitation for the number of controllers on the 360, PS3, and/or Wii?I haven't done any console development, but it seems less obvious now that console controllers are basically just USB and Bluetooth devices.Rock Band will be sporting four instruments. Is it physically possible that later installments could have more? Thanks for your time!

Well I know that the PS3 supports up to 7 bluetooth devices at a time.

Keep in mind that if there are more
than 4 instruments being played at the same time and if the entire
band is in the same room on the same tv there would be space issues
on the screen (and most likely the room as well) it does seem like it
would be a great concept for online play though.

Edit: SP

Well as Rainer said the PS3 can connect 7 sixaxis controllers via Bluetooth. The X360 can have up to 4 wireless controllers. Although the PS3 and the 360 both have 4 and 3 USB ports respectively, so perhaps extra controllers could be played (but more likely charged) via USB.

I really don't expect any new instruments ie. keyboards. We would've known about it I think, and there's already going to be enough happening on the screen, let alone extra guitars or whatever.

So it is possible to have more instruments, but not probable.

PS3 has up to 7 controllers, so 2 guitars, 1 drum set, and 3 other controllers can be on at the same time. I don't know about 360 and Wii though.

That's all good but why did you feel the need to revive a 2 year old thread?

You should have seen last night, some punk buster was taking all of these ancient posts (pertaining to pre-release Rock Band and GH:80's) and saying "I disagree".
Mr. Senora Nick took care of the issue, thankfully.

I wonder what Big Daddy's HMX user name is.
And also lol@ Cinder. He was the last moderator left at the old, old GH boards and abandoned the place because it sucked so much.
