I was reading a post about how Iggy Pop, The Pixes, Blue Cheer, and others were historicly important but not legendary. Other bands took what they started and perfected it. Alice Cooper didn't invent Shock Rock, but he perfected it.

Which is more important to you, Inventors or Perfectors?

Hey RBF -- answered your PM

And on this topic -- what really matters to me are the songs. If I like the songs I don't care that much if they are innovative or derivative of a certain already established style. But -- when you combine the two, innovation and great songs, that's when legends are born, IMO.

So I don't know how to vote -- but I guess it means perfection.

innovatingly perfecting something I guess. Kind of hard to answer but when I look at my favorite bands most of them didn't invent the style but creatively expanded on it in a great way.

Thanks. Based on what you said, perfectors are more important to you.

I guess I'd say inventors. What's that saying about standing on the shoulders of giants?

If no one invented it, there would be no one to perfect it. So while I enjoy the perfecters more, since it's perfected, I've gotta say the inventors are more important.

I agree with Fogey. A blend of both is what makes you a legend.

this is a nice topic, a bit hard to decide since we obviously need inventors both most of us probably perfer to listen to perfectors.

And where does a band like rush stand, are the inventors, perfectors, or both?

Not sure what to call Rush.

I don't really know how to answer this one... My favorite band is Led Zeppelin because they have an amazing sound all around. They were a very influencial band in early heavy metal and blues rock and they were extremely talented at the same time. They helped invent and perfect at the same time. I would probably have to say perfection because some bands take a sound that was already "invented" and make it their very own. Deep Purple wasn't the very first Hard Rock band, but they had a style that they perfected, and it made them stand out. Alice Cooper didn't invent shock rock, but he perfected his style and made it his own. Rush wasn't the very first Prog band, but they stood out because of their amazing sound, and plus they were on The Colbert Report last night!
