Among the DLC is the entire Who's Album "Who's Next," Metallica's "One," and eighteen songs by The Grateful Dead.

Easy--they have one of two options:
1.) Simplify the bass part. Instead of the sextuplets you play on double bass just play the triplets (essentially the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes). HMX has done this extensively with trills at easier difficulty levels. Even though you're only playing every other note of the trill it does feel like you're playing the trill with that motion and the sound of the full trill coming out of the speakers.
2.) Map the bass part to the pads. Pretty self-explanitory, they could just put the sextuplets on one of the pads and change the quarter notes on the hi-hats and snares to fit accordingly.
Either way it'll be fine. Even at expert there are some things that have been left out of the chart (for example the 2nd solo fill in Tom Sawyer where Neal Peart plays 9-tuplets between his hands and feet in the pattern: tom-tom-kick, tom-tom-kick... In RB they have it as a double stop on yellow/blue alternating with the kick in triplets. So instead of TTKTTKTTK TTKTTKTTK it's TKT KTK TKT KTK). Same feel but a simplified part.

You know, the One confirmation came from the following article originally:
http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/08/15/metallica-deny-lawsuit-rumor-ugk-top-billboard-chart-radiohead-push-new-lp-to-2008/
It was a Rolling Stones Article, and it was confirmed by the Band not HMX in a very absent way. But they make no mention of Enter Sandman, which was the actual announced song at the time. I've always thought this was a pretty weak confirmation of One coming to Rock Band, and I've never seen anything else from anyone from HMX.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there.

you mean besides those of us who are old enough to have watched them sell out in the 90s and then become whiny little primadonnas over napster in the early 2000s? ;) I like their older stuff (pre-"Load"), but they've lost all my respect.

I just hope they don't make it as hard as GH3 had. It's rediculous how hard they made it even on the "Hard" setting.

To say you have lost respect for them is rediculous. They only did what every other artist wanted to, they were the only one with the stones to fight Napster.

...Or they could just sell a separate bass pedal so you can plug in two... Unlikely though. Hearing all this tech talk from you makes me feel kinda sad that they had to flub on the drums to simplify them. Then again, this is HMX's first try at making a "drum hero", so the controller won't be perfect, and needs to be simple for casual gamers to use.
I love the drum controller, though, don't get me wrong! :D I think it's as perfect as they can get it right now. For RB 2, they might change some things for it (like add double bass), but for now, it's an awesome first shot.

I think it's just too impractical for an accessible game personally. I know there's lots of buzz for it, but most of the people asking for it more than likely couldn't play even sextuplets at 110 anyway. Double bass requires a LOT of muscle conditioning and practice to be able to pull off for any extended period of time, and to tell a casual player who's working their way up the difficulties "work on getting your left foot up to speed a few hours a day, and in 3 weeks you might be able to muddle your way through that metal song" would be pretty crappy.
To me it's almost analogous to wanting a bottleneck accessory to accurately play the slide guitar parts. The seasoned players might enjoy it, but it's kind of outside the scope of a rhythm game.

Perfect analogy. I doubt we'll ever see the double bass in Rock Band. It isn't worth redoing the drum thing, i'm sure there's only one plug in for the bass pedal so there'd have to be a hub or something I suppose, or maybe a third party bass pedal. I dunno. If more metal songs are put out for DLC HMX will do the best job they can of making the note charts playable with one bass pedal.

Uh, no. Metallica and the RIAA were the 600lb Gorilla in that fight, *not* Napster.
It's a bit hypocritical that a band that was *made* by fans sharing their recordings made such a stink. For many bands, Napster was a positive exposure akin to radio play that *helped* not hurt them. Look at Radiohead, they'd never broken the Top 20 in the US before Kid A got massive pre-release exposure courtesy of Napster. On release it shot to #1.
It's not that I lost respect for them protecting their property, it's *how* they handled the situation: playing the poor me victim role, the absurd MTV VMA skit Lars did, etc. They had an opportunity to work with Napster and set a positive precedent on the handling of digital music, instead they helped create the sue happy RIAA monster that exists today. 12 year olds getting sued for downloading a couple songs? Thanks Metallica!

except 'every other artist' didn't want to do that. Some, sure, but many more have embraced it.

That's a foolish analogy. The commodity in this example is one that is *already* given away for free.

I don't really have that much of an opinion on the matter of Metallica's whiny past. But I do tend to lean more towards seeing what they did with the whole Napster thing as a foolish move. Around the same time the quality of their music started to decline, so that just added to their tarnished image.
But, they're still one of the genius bands who pioneered thrash metal and I'm glad two of their songs are available to play. Personally, I hope they release Disposable Heroes for DLC eventually, as that is my favorite "war sucks" song by them.

What has been discussed ?Someone show me anywhere that "ONE" is coming to RB.
Ya Metallica is bring a full albums worth of songs to DLC, but I have never even seen any rumors of any songs they're bring.
That Rolling Stone artical I believe was just generalizing that Metallica was coming to GH3 and RB.I could be wrong though, but I doubt it.
