This is pretty much a big vent thread for people who have had bad experiences with best buy and/or their employees.
Ill start.
So, I finally got around to trying out the Best Buy demo. Guitar, drums, mic, all is well. So i figured I won't make myself look stupid just yet so I decide to play one song on guitar first, because I know I'm good at it, and I wanted to try out the new guitar. [NOTE] I'm playing by myself.
I try to choose Epic, because i know there are some technical guitar parts in that song, so I choose it. WTF, it doesn't load, it says the disc is dirty, I'm semi pissed because I thought that nothing would work. I re-load rock band and try to do the same thing. BLAM, dirty disc. Now I'm worried.
I give up on the guitar at this point because from reloading the game twice I already fudged around with the guitar enough so I decided to give drums a try.
Unfortunately stupid bestbuy didn't put a chair out so I have to play standing up, bummer.
I can't which songs I played first but I noticed that when I tried to play certain songs, they wouldn't load, and the dirty disc message would pop up. So i knew it was actually dirty because the same songs wouldn't work everytime.
At this point I was standing there for about an hour, and I only played around 3-4 songs. I was actually pretty irritated.
I find someone to help me, he was pretty cool, I told him what was up and so he went to go take the disc out when he realized he didn't have a key for it. So he said to ask this fatass guy because he had the key.
I confront captain lardass and tell him my problem. Before I even walked over to him I knew he was going to give me a hard time because I needed help with something that wouldn't get him any commission, I thought of this as mission impossible.
I told him what the problem was and he said that he would have to go get the key and to give him a couple of minutes, I said "ok" very nicely because I didn't want to get on his bad side, and because he wasn't going to make any money on him helping me out.
I go back, try to play more songs, doesn't work. 30 minutes go by and the State Puff marshmallow man is no where to be found. I search him out again and ask if he has the key, he says "Yea I got it, but the disc being dirty isn't the problem, its because its a demo disc and it doesn't work properly". I say "Huh?, the demo discs work fine, its just that this is dirty, I just need someone to unlock the 360 cage, take the disc out, give it a quick rub down, then reset it". He says "No thats not the problem, trust me"
At this point I was pissed. I work in retail so I know that customers can be a pain in the ass, especially when they're not making you money, but if he just did what I asked it would only take a minute or two.
So I walk away and try to find someone else since Yokozuno wasn't any help.
I talk to this other guy and tell him the problem, he quickly calls over the fatty again and he bull****s me some more. I then said "please man, just help me out, I only want to play a few more songs then I'll be outta here"
He walks over to the demo with me and says "Im going to have to shut it down and let it cool off, come back later" He then turns the TV off and walks away.
I was furious because not only did he not help me out but he didn't even turn the xbox off, he only turned the tv off so I would leave the store (I bought a faceplate there too, so its not like I was just a freeloader) I was extremely angry
I decided that I will come back later tonight because hopefully that dude won't be working, and maybe someone that isn't a lazy butterball will help me out. And if he is working I just say,
"Is it cooled off yet?"

dude, the game is out in 3 weeks. I don't see why you needed to make such a big deal about it. You got a few songs in. and who knows, maybe it's a persistent problem.

It was just the point that he wouldn't just take the game out, take a look at it, clean it off with his shirt, and put it back in. That wouldn't have taken longer than 2 minutes. But he couldn't even do that.

Just to clarify, Best Buy employees are NOT on commision. Therefore if you want to give us attitude, well we have ways of dealing with that.
Sux he would not try cleaning the disc and getting you up and running though, turning off the TV was rude and stupid as well as lame and feeble. If the Xbox was overheating (they do that you know) then turning that off is one thing but switching the display off is ******ed.
Come to my store, we've got Rock Band going off 24/7. We don't put out chairs because, well we're not your living room dude. Or a video arcade. We love having people play the demo because it's fun and chances are people will BUY the game if they like it. Heck we play it ourselves when we're bored or just want a couple of minutes of fun on the floor. I was belting out "Black Hole Sun" today a couple of times and rocking the crap out of it baby. The store display is a SALES TOOL. It's not there for your amusement, it's there to get you to buy the game. Game makers PAY Best Buy big money to get their product out there in front of you, the consumer.
And for the record, we genuinely want people to have a great experience in our stores. Come try out a game and have fun, but don't think that because we wear blue shirts that we can be kicked around or treated like your personal servants. I would not judge you as a person or a customer based on your picture on this forum. Do go back and try again. If they treat you bad we have managers designated specifically to ensure that if there is any way for us to give you a great experience in our stores. They are called Customer Experience managers and there is one on duty nearly every business hour barring lunch.

360's give a dirty disc error for a number of reasons, including various hardware failures. I wouldn't immediately jump on the dude as a "wipe it off and all's good" situation. Demo consoles probably take a lot of abuse being on 24/7.
And don't let one bad experience sour you, it's just the luck of the draw. At my Best Buy, an employee and I chatted about the improved hardware compared to GH3 and how bad we stunk with the solo buttons. :D Very decent guy.

When I get a disc error I just eject the disc and blow on it, put it back into the console and it's just fine. My other GH2 disc howver, If I try to play certain songs it'll give me an error. That's because I have a bit of scratches on it and I don't know how they got there =\, Most likely from extended play because I take care of my games when not playing them.

Yea, I pretty much just made this thread because I was so upset that I couldn't play all the songs, and the guy wouldn't help me out. This is actually my first bad experience at a BestBuy.
Just to clarify i wasn't being an ******* with him at all, and I only went up and bothered him twice. I am definitely going back tonight to try again. ]
When I was typing my rant I was actually thinking to myself "There are definitely some Best Buy employees on this site that are going to be mad" But at that point I didn't care because I was really really pissed. The title of my thread is very misleading as well. I'm not actually venting towards the Best Buy organization, just at General Fatty McFattster.
Sorry to sound like a jerk.

its good to see that some people take their jobs seriously, but the sad thing is, is that most of them dont. If an employee is sub-25 years old, there is a great possibilty that he is just counting the minutes until his shift is over.
I got a chance to play the demo about an hour ago and the Rock Band strat didnt work. They had a wired les paul that did work and it sucks having to play the drums standing up, but overall i enjoyed it.

My dad bought a video card at BB, but the card in the box was the wrong model. Big problem because the model wasn't compatible with the PC he was putting it into. BB said they wouldn't help him.
Then there's this guy who got a box of bathroom tiles, instead of a hard drive (http://consumerist.com/consumer/fraud/best-buy-sells-you-a-box-of-bathroom-tiles-instead-of-hard-drive-wont-issue-refund-315873.php). Same thing with BB. Dude had to get AmEx to halt the payment.
Basically, BB thinks that they aren't liable for manufacturer issues, when really they should just take the thing back and deal with the manufacturer. You know, that's their job.
Also, they put a $3 markup on all 360 accessories in the weeks leading up to Halo 3.
Just my 2 cents on why I don't shop at Best Buy unless absolutely necessary.

I stay away from big box store simply because i know more about what i want than anyone could "help" me with. If i am going to drop $50+ i have already done my homework. I dont need suggestions on what to buy and whatnot. I will go in if they have a rediculous sale or something, but other than that, i stay away.

Damn right! I went to walmart ('cause it's closest), to pick up GH3 for PS2. I saw the red sg and xplorer for the xbox. I told the guy it was supposed to come with a kramer/les paul and instead of just saying "sorry, I don't know anything about that" he tried to convince me there was NO lespaul or kramer for any of the systems. At All. Even at other stores.
Then he said I was lucky 'cause they just received GH3, to which I replied, "yeah I know, that's why I'm here today" and he asked how I knew???? WHAT? Really? INTERNET dude..man some people are morons!!

I like the best Buy I went to, the people were very helpful and the lady even took the time from restocking to go check and see if they had any more Xbox 360 Elite controllers in the back. Sometimes you get sh*tty service, anywhere you go. Just gotta either find a new Best Buy, or hope the same people dont work there the next time when you go back.
However my Best Buy still doesnt have the Rock Band demo yet.

You work in a GameCrazy, don't you?
I used to run FuncoLand. Anybody remember FuncoLand? We got bought out by GameStop in 2000. '99 actually, but the process didn't start until 2000.
Anyway, the guy turning off the system... that was a douche move. When you're a kid working in a game store, it feels really good to shut down those machines at the end of the night... especially if people are playing them.
And I don't know... most of the sales people at Best Buy aren't invested in their jobs, so I don't think they're selling me things any more than the Wal-Mart kids; they're just better informed on their product. I haven't seen someone actually have a vested interest in their jobs without commission since the FuncoLand days; we loved our jobs and so we did them very well.
Oh, and game makers don't pay you big money to set up a game in your store. MS/Sony/Nintendo does. When I went to a store as an MS rep, that console was MY console. I was in charge of it, I replaced the parts, and you'd better be running demos that I gave you. (I wasn't that strict, though.)
It cost HMX money to send you that demo disc and peripherals, but they're not paying you to run that demo. They're piggybacking off of the good grace of MS.
I miss FuncoLand.

I had the opposite experience in BB this morning. I went over to play a couple songs, and when I got there an employee on his day off was trying to play it, but the drums weren't responding. It turned out he was the guy who had set it up originally a few days ago, so he tore the thing apart and fixed it (plugged the drums back in). He just played like half of one song and then let me play.

Yeah I don't know where your BB is, but in Cape Girardeau the employee's know their ****. I went in to pick up FMA last year and one employee saw it and said that that was a great choice. So we talked a little bit and the employee gave me a list of good shows that I already knew, but it proved to me that our BB does't hire idiots. Then again maybe they do, but goddamn it they keep them in their cage! They know better than to let them do actual work! :D

The Best Buy employees where I live are so bad (rude, lazy, unknowledgable) that the only reason anyone shops there is the CD prices (and almost nowhere else to buy them) and the occasional sale on big ticket items. Nice to hear they're not all that way.
Then again, almost everyone under 25 in this city is utterly pathetic, so it's not just BB.

I can guarantee Tedsallis was planning on signing up for the forums eventually (he was reading them, wasn't he?), this was just the first thread he decided to post in. I'm sure a lot of people can't understand taking pride in doing a good job at what they would consider to be not a "real" job. Many of my coworkers do not. That is the reason why some Best Buys suck and some rule.
I'm sure a lot of people can't understand taking enough ownership in it to think of that store as mine. Oh well, I know when I hit that floor that beeyotch is MINE and I rule supreme.
If you don't understand that it's cool with me, I decided a long time ago that life was too short to work at any job I didn't like and I really enjoy working at Best Buy right at the level I am at. I split my time between that part time and part owner of a comic book store. I'd have been a manager at Best Buy long ago if I'd been willing to give up everything else in my life other than my job.
I'm not.
I'm grown up enough to understand my own motivations and the choices I make in my life. My life is good, my wife loves me. I get along with my in laws and I can't wait to meet my baby. That's more than many people can say, including a lot of people who make a lot more money than me. Maybe some day you'll grow up and you will understand. I hope you don't waste too much of your life chasing money or MTV's definition of "success" before that happens for you.
Nobody ever went to their grave saying "I wish I had spent more time at work." ;)

Ya know...theres no sense in bashing an entire corporation for a few bad employees at select stores. Its like my Microsoft thread...I didnt bash them for the crappy customer service, I bashed them for their faulty product and the constant ducking around they put me through. I still like Microsoft, but I am aware of their flaws. No matter where you go, Best Buy or Wendy's, it is likely you will run into crappy employees. If you do run into crappy employees, heres my advice, dont be an ass back, that only makes you look just as bad, just go see a manager about your problem. Best Buy is a great store that offers some pretty crazy cool stuff that you wont normally find in Gamestop. Microsoft stopped selling warranties with new systems with Gamestop (which was just another flaw). Best Buy still offers their product replacement deal, which I think is better anyways, so I shopped there.
Again, if you run into a bad employee, just be the better person and walk away and go find a manager, they will handle it. Dont get mad at Best Buy for hiring stupid people, you cant really do 100% proof positive background checks on someone's personality and mental state on someone you hire.

Actually, he's Border Patrol. He keeps the illeagals out of the country and keeps your taxes low. Now go ahead and appologize.
Alright, I apologize for saying you work at Wendys.
That, however, doesn't give you the right to bash someone else's job. Also, making fun of people on the internet is for 12 year olds. If you're not 12, stop it.

you should just go to another bestbuy, no employees bothered me last night at the one near me. I played for about 90-minutes, mostly guitar and vocals at the same time, no one said anything (except people who wanted to join in...) (ps, RockBand is definately my favorite game ever (I've known that a while, but now that I've played it, I know for sure))
anyway, try another bestbuy or just try that one at a different time, I'm sure it won't be as bad...

wow, this thread got out of hand, I should have named it differently.
Before this incident I had never had a problem there before, it was just this one time. The next day I actually went back to see if it was working better, it was. This guy(not farva) came up to me that was working the other day when that crap happened and said (note, this was early in the morning, about 3 hours after they opened) "Hey, I opened the xbox this morning before we opened and checked out the disc, it was wicked dirty, it had a thick-ass thumb print on it, but i cleaned it off, and it should be working now".
Sure enough it did, and I got to play the songs that I didn't the day before.
Its nice when employees actually remember stuff and help you out.
