I'd like to upgrade to mesh heads, but as cheaply as possible: I can't justify spending upwards of $150 on the goodwoodmods set, despite how great they are.
I brainstormed, and I came up with an alternative solution. I'd like to know what people familiar with modding the stock drums thought. Here's my plan:
1: Remove the stock pad assembly and disconnect the wires.
2: Unscrew the black plastic rim from the gray plastic pad.
3: Place a ring on the gray plastic pad. I thought these might work: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2098&PRODID=prd43252&_requestid=102032.
4. Build the standard foam-piezo-foam sensor, and fix it to the top of the gray plastic pad, inside the ring.
5. Make a mesh drumhead, using window screen mesh and the black plastic rim removed from the gray plastic pad in step 2, above.
6. Using longer screws, reattach the black plastic ring (now a makeshift mesh head) to the gray plastic pad.
7. Replace the entire piece on the stock kit. It should slide right back into place, because the mounting posts are still on the bottom of the gray plastic pad.
This should leave you with a makeshift but totally functional mesh drumhead.
The only things to purchase would be a piezo ($2/drum), wiring ($1/drum), some foam ($2/drum), some longer screws($1/drum), a ring ($2/drum), and some window screen ($3/drum). The total, then, would be $11/drum.
What do you think?

my first diy attempt was the exact same thing - well i used wood hoops but they were the same cross stitch kinda deal
they worked surprisingly enough - but i had trouble keeping tension on the mesh
after a few plays the mesh would loosen and cause problems
but that is certainly a good cheap way to go

Hmm, well Ive thought about that but cant say Ive really acted upon it... On the other hand I just finished my Mesh head set :D (see first picture). I'll write a longer post about that later this week. The embroidering hoop that you are thinking about work great for making the mesh heads (see Picture 2 and 3) you just need to stitch the mesh around the hoop to keep it from slipping loose (I used floss). The only problem that I can come up with is that the 8" hoop is larger then the black ring that you'd be unscrewing and with the hoop with mesh in place; it would get in the way of the screws. Unless you were to cut the hoop and make it the correct size and somehow mend it together. Also, you'll need something to tension the mesh in the middle, so I'd suggest to use a bucket or a tin case. Good luck on this and keep me posted:)

Thanks for the input. I've got two busy weeks coming up, but I'll try and give this a shot. When I do, I'll let you know how it goes.
