View Full Version : Help Me Decide On A Game

Well, November is right around the corner, and we all know that there will be the releasing of at least three prominent games: Rock Band, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed. For now, Rock Band isn't a valid option. The reason I say this is because my two buds and I agreed that we will all throw in for it eventually, and I'm not too much in a rush to get it anyhow. So that just leaves Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect.
My dilemma is quite simple, really. I can't for the life of me decide what to get upon release and what to hold out for until Christmas. Any help?

This is a hard decision. I think what I might do is hold off on Mass Effect because it is the longer game. Since I get to play it over Christmas holidays, school and such wouldn't interfere and I could get the most out of it. Truth be told, I'm equally excited for both.

That's the same thing I was going to say. Mass Effect might ba a game you might be more likely to want to curl up in front of the TV and play for for long hours into the night over Christmas break.

(I do not like either game over each other, this is just what I know, I'm getting both either way)
You'll get much much much much more hours out of Mass Effect.
If you liked Knights of the old republic at all, go with mass effect.
If you hated everything about knights of the old republic, get assassins' creed.
I heard that the controls with Assassin's creed's fighting system was a bit sketchy.
Mass Effect is kind of like a 3rd person shooter mixed with real time rpg elements(if you didn't know already)
and
My boss when to this las vegas videogames expo thingy, and his favorite game there was mass effect.
Either way they're both going to be really good games, so its a win win situation.....
...unless one of them blows.

Mass Effect would be the easy choice for me (but that's AFTER Rock Band lol)

Mass Effect is my top game this fall.
I love Bioware for KotOR, and I fell Mass Effect will shine in that same way.

Go for Assassins Creed. Mass effect looks pretty good, but just doesnt seem as exciting or fun as AC.

Rent them... or get gamefly. Buying games that you'll play through twice then let it sit on a shelf till is just a waste of cash.

Mass Effect. Assassin's Creed got completely slammed in the latest EGM. They didn't come right out and say it sucked, but they were skating right along the edge of it. AC does have a cute producer though.

I agree with this big time. Gamefly is great. In the past I'd spend the $50 for a new game, beat it, then get bored with it.
Unless it has a deep multiplayer mode, it's not worth spending the money on. Story games just aren't worth the investment.

As a long time Bioware fan, Mass Effect is the only thing besides Rock Band that I'm looking forward to this holiday season. KOTOR and Baldur's Gate 2 are shining gems of gaming perfection.

Ah yes, I loved KOTOR I. Bioware did a great job with that game. I thought II was pretty good, too. I'll probably just get Assassin's Creed first. I still haven't beat Twilight Princess, so I'll have both of those to occupy me until Christmas.

I think I might've looked at that issue. It was the one with Brutal Legend on the front, right? If so, I don't really recall Assassin's Creed being criticized much, even if it wasn't overt.

Tell me about it... I should of thought about that before I bought GHIII :\
I'd get Assassin's Creed if I were you. I'm planning to get it and then get RB the week after... granted that I've saved enough money to do so xD

Unfortunately, I don't have the right amount of money to shell out for Rock Band right now. :(

Bioware games always have a good replay value because you can play through as multiple character types or good or evil etc.
I agree about Gamefly though. Most games are beat & never repeat. Some stuff is a definite buy though. I buy stuff like NHL 2k series no matter what, Guitar Hero, anything by Bioware (I still play KOTOR on Xbox and KOTOR2 on PC once in a while, and they are always good to have to loan out to a trusted friend to enjoy it and not bring it back all scratched up haha).
Really just depends on what kind of games you like. But I always rent from our local video store first to make sure. I definitely want Mario Part 8 for the Wii but found out Cooking Mama wasn't up to my girlfriend's standards (saved us $40 right there lol).
I definitely want Rock Band solely based on how much I repeatedly play Guitar Hero, and that's just a couple guitars lol.

honestly?
Mass Effect will beat the **** out of the unproven Assassins Creed.
Dont get me wrong, I'll still get both, but I'm not expecting GOTY quality from assassins like I KNOW Mass Effect will portray.
it all comes down to whether you'd rather play an rpg or action game though

No, it has Ninja Gaiden II on the cover, it just came out. They do an extensive playtest of AC, comparing the E3 demo to the gold version, and hit it pretty hard. I'd post a link, but the article isn't online yet, except for this excerpt:
BEFORE: Watching Assassin's Creed's trailer makes you want to learn the killin' trade: Nimble assassin climbs up walls, hops along rooftops, and lunges in for kills in ways that would even impress cover-story ninja Ryu Hayabusa. Best part? All the amazing action looks so smooth. Well, there's a reason why - trailers don't need controls to look cool. Too bad games do. The first time we played the game, we didn't do anything that falls remotely into the category of "cool" - unless you count falling on our ass multiple times while guards poked us like a human pincushion. Part of the problem is the needlessly complex controls for seemingly simple actions. Want to bound from building to building? OK, first hold down the right trigger. Now you also need to hold down the A button, run with the right analog stick, and pray you don't die (or jump in the direction you don't want to go). Oh, and one more thing: If you miss a jump but don't want to fall to your death, you can also press the B button to grab on to a ledge ... if you can actually remember to do this (we sure didn't). Weirdly enough, this is coming from the development team that gave us the pick-up-and-play Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
AFTER: Looks like we're not the only one who had trouble controlling our medieval murderers. "We know that the controls take some getting used to for some players," says Assassin's Creed Producer Jade Raymond. "But playtesting has shown that casual and hardcore gamers get the hang of it quite quickly." OK, we can see hardcore gamers gettin' into it, but the casual crowd? From what we've played, any videogame newbies who play the game will most likely kill themselves more often than their targets. Still, we have to admit that we did (sort of) get the hang of the controls the more we played. One of the game's interesting design choices is mapping each limb of the main character Altair's body to the controller's face buttons. For example, feet are the A button, your head is the Y button, and the left and right arms are the X and B buttons. "Patrice Desilets, our creative director, wanted to find a control mapping that would be intuitive and easy to remember for all players," says Raymond. "Patrice wanted the player to be immersed in the experience, not trying to remember if the move he wants to perform is X+X+A or A+X+X."
In a way, Desilet's decision does make sense. But while we did start to move less like a buffoon and more like a trained killer toward the end of our demo, we still had a difficult time maneuvering around while being chased by a gang of guards. Not only is holding down several buttons annoying, it also seemed like Altair wouldn't obey our controller commands.
