I saw a video of people playing the drums and noticed that they sounded kinda loud, for those who have played the demo stands, are the drums loud when you hit them? I'm not talking about the sound from the game but the actual sound from hitting the drums.

Yeah, they make a fair bit of noise, but even with the little tv an sound output that the BB demo was using, it didn't seem overly annoying, especially when I was hitting the notes right on time.
Honestly though, when you're playing at home shouldn't the sound be so loud you can't hear it anyway?

A lot of the times if it sounds really really loud in videos, that's people hitting the plastic edging around the pads with the sticks.
Hitting the actual rubber pad itself isn't too loud. Sounds pretty much like a regular rubber electronic drum kit.

Yeah, it's not too loud at all. The only time I was distracted was when this other kid played Tom Sawyer on Expert, and even then the only reason I was distracted was because I was in awe of the kid.
They make sound, but if you're paying attention to the music, and playing properly, it shouldn't be too bad.

Yeah. Like the GH 'click' sound on the Gibsons.
You have to be very attention lacking for it to matter. And the actual pads, not the rims, make almost no sound.

I'm not gonna lie--they're pretty loud.
It's not as loud as playing on a neoprene practice pad, but it's definitely not gum rubber.
I don't think it's very distracting, certainly not any more than the click of the strumbar used to be, but if it really annoys you there are options (http://www.vicfirth.com/products/SSJ3.html) though. Those sticks have rubber tips that allow you to practice on whatever surface you want (table, concrete) but it would definitely be a lot quieter than a wood/nylon tip. It is a marching stick though, so it's a lot longer and thicker than drumset sticks.
I wouldn't worry about it too much though. Just crank it up and pound away. :P

Exactly, it's no worse than the click of the old guitars. Just play on time, don't hit the rim, and learn to play with minimal effort and you won't notice it.

It's noticeable and a little annoying on a tiny LCD demo, but it really wasn't an issue on a full surround sound system. The lesson is that you should get a surround sound system. Or at least crank the volume way up :)

Not directing this to you specifically, there's a lot who've mentioned it and this isn't really the conversation for it, but music is only mixed for stereo - 2 channels - There might be some game content mixed to other channels perhaps, but I don't understand why people go on about Surround Sound systems when talking about this game or listening to music in general. Any stereo speakers worth a crap can easily project direction, at least left, center, and right.
Surround Sound is the better-marketed Quadrophonic Stereo of the 00s - it's ok for movies, but silly for music.

I find simulated surround (parts of the Left and Right channels mixed into rear channels) to be a nice improvement for listening to music. It's more immersive to be literally surrounded with the music, even if it's not necessarily positional.

How about if you live in an apartment? I don't want to have the neighbors complaining.

True, but a 5.1 setup is usually louder in the middle of the room than a 2.1 setup. It also projects the sound to the entire room more fully. Just a guess.

It's not as loud as a TV would be. As long as your walls aren't paper, you won't disturb anyone.

Thats why I play through these suckers...Turn em up to about 11 and you cant hear anything and the neighbors even say then can hear the music somtimes. Two 12 inch subs and two 4 inch mids and two 3 inch tweeders.
Its like an arena in my living room when we play guitar hero.

uhhh this got off topic...
The best thing I've seen in this thread are those rubber tips sticks,I use them on my practice pad all the time, silent as it gets.

Found these online. Just the tips, so you can buy the sticks you want and then retrofit them to have silent rubber tips.

from what ive read about them they dont really work as well as youd expect them too. but maybe combined with a practice pad it will be very quiet?
i also wonder if youd have too much rebound with a rubber tip banging a practice pad? ive never tried that before.

There are also "deadbeats", shown here.

They're supposed to be a drumstick that foregoes the need for a practice pad, in that the large rubber tip protects any surface you drum on.
However, your question about the combination of a practice pad *plus* a stick designed to mimic a practice pad might be correct, in that the action might be a tad springy.
