View Full Version : What second guitar are people planning to use?

What are people doing to get a second guitar for the Rock Band bass, for the PS3?

Apparently even pre-ordering you can't get an extra official RB guitar at launch along with the bundle.

I was planning on not buying GH3 - the RB guitar (apparently) doesn't work on it so that means no two player unless I buy *another* guitar. Activision have shot themselves in the foot there.

Will the old PS2 guitars work adequately as a RB bass using a PS2 -> USB converter? I've heard various tales about tilt, whammy and hammer-on/offs not working through those converters, which even for the bass will be a disadvantage... April's a long way off!

So what's everyone else doing for bass?

Using my X-Plorer as my bass and GHIII guitar. Finally my 360 is truly paying off. :D

Planning to use the Xplorer as the bass. Unless the Fender is as finicky as the one I used at Best Buy that only really registered upstrums; in that case the Fender would be the bass and the Xplorer the guitar.

I can't confirm most of this, but here is what I am thinking that I will do.

I currently own 2 PS2 guitars, GH1, GH2 and GH 80s. I also own a PS3, and two of these. (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=802566) They work perfectly for Guitar hero 1. There is absolutely no difference. For Guitar Hero 2 and the 80s, you can't perform Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs, and star power has to be activated by pressing Select.

According to the GH Forum (GH Controller FAQ (http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=28298)), even the new PS3 Les Paul has the same problems with GH2 and 80s, but 100% compatible with GH1.

The problem seems to be with how the USB connection maps to the in game commands. If that is true (which I still need to verify), then I would assume that I could use both of my PS2 controllers, with the adapters, to play GH3 on PS3. If somebody can verify that you can use the adapters to play GH3 on PS3, then you should be able to use your old PS2 controllers to play Rock Band, at least until they release individual guitars. Or keep your eyes on e-Bay. I am sure some people will buy extra bundles just to sell of some of the pieces.

I'll be using my gh3 les paul as bass. I was able to use the strat, and I'm perfectly happy using it as my main guitar.

I'm seriously debating just getting a second Rockband bundle, that way I can have 2 Strats, and 2 drumkits right off the bat, and me and my friends can rock the holiday away.

I'll probably get the Xplorer.

As much as I bash GH3, the Les Paul is a fine piece of hardware.

Mr. Paul would be proud.

I've been mulling over this same situation. I have two PS2 guitars with the USB adapters, but I doubt they will work with Rock Band on the PS3. I really, really, really don't want to dump money on GHIII just for a bass guitar. Blargh.

I'm on 360, once I get Rock Band I'll likely get rid of my GH2 x-plorer and use the GH3 les paul as bass.

I'm also in the "debating two bundles" camp.

None of my local friends are interested in just drums + game, so it'd be a big investment just for a second guitar unless I hit eBay, but at that point I'd rather just /keep/ the second drum kit. :p

Going to buy a second Strat off of someone (anyone in the Twin Cities area want to sell, PM me ;) ). If I'm doing guitar battles in RB I want everyone to use the same hardware so it's an even playing field. Of course, since they can't be used in GH3, I will probably end up getting it for PS2 where I can use my current guitars.

That's what I am looking to do, as well. I paid good money for them, might as well keep using them.

i have GH2 and GH3 for 360, so i got the xplorer & LP for GH co-op and strat & LP/xplorer for RB. if somebody doesnt like the the LP or it runs out of batteries mid-game, the xplorer comes in to save the day!

To be honest, once I finish playing through coop career on easy with my (GH Newbie) wife, I probably won't ever play offline 2 player GH again. ;)

We'll be using the wireless 360 Les Paul for a bass. We ordered 2 copies of GH3 so that we could play co-op (all our previous copies were PS2), so no sense in not using a fine guitar for the bass while we have it...

Now to put that extra copy of the GH3 game on eBay...

Les Paul for bass. I keep seeing what appears to be pictures of a white-faced Xbox 360 Les Paul, but I can only find the black-faced one in bundles. It has changeable face plates so who cars.

I really don't understand why people want 2 strats as lead/bass. Variety is great! The bass/rythm guitar doesn't need the 5-way switch/solo bottons so why have them. When you tell your friend "Hey pick up the bass" you don't want to say "No, not that one, the other one... wait, I think that one's lead."

I'd prefer if I could get the Les Paul wired if I could, but I don't seem to think that's gunna happen. Does anyone know if the Les Paul wireless uses the same battery packs as the Xbox 360 wireless controllers? That would be ideal. Loose batteries would be seriously lame.

I'll probably get the Les Paul in a GH3-bundle for those songs and finally put the PS2 to rest as the GH-machine. I won't be able to play GH3 MP without a second guitar but who cares. If you want MP you want RB.

I would love to have another Fender, too bad you can't buy them.

The PS3 Les Paul is working with Rockband, right? RIGHT??

I hope so, or else every PS3 owner will miss a bass player.

Wait.. that's a good question.. I myself will be using my Les Paul as my secondary guitar.. but what about people who never bought any other GH game have 4 people playing? What about people who casually game that never got GH that are getting Rock Band for parties, how will they have 2 guitar controllers if the Guitars don't go on sale till next year? They could buy GH3, that's a load of money there, they could buy and X-Polar but why even bother.
This seems like a smart marketing idea.. and a really dumb one at the same time.. I mean I'd love to have enough Rock band controllers at start if I just got my 360/PS3 for it. =[

Well, I'm still sitting on the hope that the PS2 sg's will work properly with the converter for Rock Band on PS3. I guess it's kind of a long shot, but I have 2 perfectly functional sg's that may never be used again otherwise.

However, my wife saw the Smashing Pumpkins faceplate for the LP guitar and has decided she must have it. But, i really don't want to drop another $115 (GH3 bundle/faceplate) just to get a second guitar for RB. That's getting damn near the RB bundle price honestly! ($55 difference - and you get a mic and drums with RB!)

Hey all, first post here but a long time reader. I'm just curious if there is any confirmation that PS2 guitars will work with adapters. My bro has all 3 games on PS2 and two guitars. I'd really like to use one of them on bass so we can have the full band on the 20th. Any help would be great!

That's what i'm banking on. But 'outlook not so good' would probably show up in the 'ol magic 8-ball. So far, the converters are iffy playing the ps2 games on your ps3. I think they said it works mostly for GH1, but then for the rest it gets pretty screwy. Some issues I've heard were: buttons incorrectly mapped, no tilt recognition, whammy issues, etc.
Because of the many problems people had, I have not even bothered picking one up yet. I'm just going to wait until someone tries out the converter with RB to see what happens.

Yeah, I've heard with the HO/PO issues, but none of the others. I've never picked it up either, but one of the earlier posts made a good point about the bass not necessarily needing some of the advance functionality, so I thought it might be worth a go as well.

Ugh, I'm really stressing about this. Unfortunately, I don't have an GH2 explorer to use until Strats come out for independent sale. I guess I'll just have to hope someone is looking to get rid of one cheap or will let me borrow theirs.

I've got a GH3 pre-order (well, back-order) in atm because I don't want to take a chance on trying to eBay or purchase another Strat. I think I might trade it in next year unless I really enjoy some of the songs and pick up a second Strat at that point unless I /really/ like the LP.

I am hoping for this as well. I do have an adapter ((Link) (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=802566) that I purchased a while ago. I am hoping that the reason it worked with GH1 and not the others is because of the lack of 3rd party support by Red Octane. Since Harmonix is in favor of using any guitar, there is a pretty good chance it will work.

I will definitely post something as soon as I pick up my package, if they work or not.

I just bought an X-plorer for my 360. I had GH2 for my PS2 with guitars, but I'm getting Rock Band for my 360. I definitely don't wanna miss out on the DLC! SOOO, I hafta buy all new guitars for my new music games.

Bleh, I also had to buy 2 dance mats for the 360.
