View Full Version : I believe at least 80% of all the DLC downloaded comes from these forums.

...because a lot of people here seem to complain about no one having DLC on Live... and is that ever true. There are even times where I go on Live and some people don't even have Still Alive and/or Promised Land.
EDIT: I'm obviously being over-dramatic by saying 80%... don't take it too literally.

The ones who are in touch with the game like us are obviously reading the DLC announcements, know the schedule for it etc.
Everyone else probably plays here and there and checks the store once a month and buy one track or so.

My forays into online quickplay have been depressing lately. It's to the point where if the person doesn't even have a character name, I'm dropping out, since that seems to for-sure mean they have no DLC.

I played on line for the first time last night. I thought ya'll were just complainers, but jeezzz are ya'll right! NO ONE has hardly any DLC. I also am on PSN so I'm sure I came across as a bi$%h. I had to back out alot before the song would start. Seriously no one wants to do Coheed and Cambria 80 times! I don't have alot of DLC but I had more than most on last night. So if you want to play and you promise :) there will be no C&C or Orange Crush. I do vocals med to expert depending on the song. PSN ogrecorsair
*edit: my girl is Miranda or Spencer, If its not one of these it would be my husband playing:)

Yeah, I'm with all of you. I have a lot of friends who own Rock Band, but don't keep up with the latest dlc releases. Some came over a few nights ago and were freaking out because I have 200+ songs and they were only around 110. Even my own family has no idea what goes on. For example:
This past Sunday night @ 9pm:

<me>: Back around March.
There's def. something to be said of being actively participating in the RB Forums.

a competitive side to a video game where you can play music? Are you joking me? You're doing "ONLINE QUICKPLAY" how competitive can you be when your scores dont count. If this was RB2 and you had online BWT, i'd see your point. However, the general point of this game is to have fun and play music that you enjoy. If you're trying to GS everysong when you have no change of throwing up a quickplay score on the leaderboards the you're just being an ass. If you wanna be competitive go play Madden.

i've already posted threads about this, but finding people on-line with DLC is an absolute nightmare. The on-line forum that PS3 users have to suffer through is horrible. I have to constantly kick person after person. And I'm sorry for the people that don't have DLC, but I'm not playing Dani California again or any other garbage on the disk that I have played 100 times. Then I finally have some one with DLC and they want to play on easy or medium. Sorry again, i don't play with easy or medium players, and really, i don't like hard players either. This always, always, upsets people. It's my on-line experience, and for me, it's not enjoyable when I'm trying to play and keep hearing the guitarist missing notes. The on-line forum should be one in which there are rooms set up with people of the same difficulties playing together and the same DLC. And how about an easy search function to sort directly to DLC. I'm tired of scrolling through my list to see what DLC I have matches whom I'm playing with. The on-line experience is great when I have four expert players with similar DLC but it's hard to find. And I know you can play with your on-line friends, but they don't play as much as me, and I personally think it's more fun playing with new people. This is just the start of my gripes for on-line play.

I'm on drums, girlfriend on the mic
Some clown joins, looking like they picked there character fresh from the start screen
If they have control, they straight to Won't Get Fooled Again
We go to the difficulty screen, they choose Medium.
Me and my girlfriend look at eachother and laugh as I exit out entirely, only to start this process over again.

I don't want to get into a console war here, because the PS3 still kicks as*. How's the Xbox360 HD dvd's doing? But the point is, the setup online is so bad, that it forces only the elite people to play on-line, and the sub par people get stiffed. Don't even dream of a tug of war match or one on one match if you don't play expert, because every one has to play at the same level as the leader. Sure, it's easy if play expert to dumb down and play hard with someone, but going the other way only proves embarrassing to the lesser player. Like I said, this is only the tip of the iceburg with fixing online play.

I know a lot of people don't have DLC, even less likely to if you get a whole band obviously since everyone has to have that one song, but welcome home first of all I wouldn't mind playing a lot and second people odn't even pick it that much in my experience. Mostly people pick enter sandman a lot and even if someone doesn't have but 2 DLC they are The Kill and Ride the Lightning, and they always play both, so those get annoying too
and I have 142 songs but yeah people usually don't have any, you shouldn't leave just because they don't have a char name to the person who said that, i don't think someone w/ a char name would be any more likely just because someone playing w/o a character name could still have a character, and who knows they could be really good

I never saw the PS3 one! I was just looking at the 360 stats to get an idea of what songs were more popular. (I knew it existed I just didn't know the link). Thanks. Problem for me is there are 20+ DLC songs I have that there aren't guitar scores for. Maybe I'll work on that:)
But yeah...not much DLC in PS3land. I'm lucky to find someone with All the Small Things let alone The WHO pack.
Most people that play Band quickplay online are dragonforce fans anyways. So you may be correct.

There needs to be a better way of doing this on-line. If anyone has ever played an EA game, Tiger Woods for example, they know about there on-line forum. Players are ranked. Wins and losses are counted. The amount of times you quit is tabulated. *(boy I hate when someone quits)* These are all critical things to a pleasurable on-line experience. No voice chat is hilarious though for the PS3. Did i say hilarious? I meant makes me want to take my PS3 and through it in the garbage.

You know, it could also be that a lot of people with DLC don't even bother with the online play? Or the play exclusively with people they know? I know - I'm one of them. Either I play with people actually in the room, a friend over live, or am working on upping my scores in solo.
And with all the complaints I constantly see about everyone who does play online picking Welcome Home, or Enter Sandman, or Dani California, or disconnecting when a song comes up they don't like (or, if in a duel the second they start losing); I really don't have any interest in starting anytime soon. Just my take on it.

Those are all good points, by the purpose of on-line play is play with new and strange people from all over the country. I know how good my friends are. I know how good my on-line friends are. It's the experience of rocking out in a video game with good people that you've never played with before. They are out there. Just have be patient and kick and kick and kick and kick.

If you were playing on a 360 and you had to hear 14 year olds whining about guitar/bass selection, bragging about how good they are (when they suck), and singing along (off-key) during the song, you'd want to throw your 360 in the garbage too. :)

True. But....Do you not have the ability to mute them? If not, that should definitely be improved upon. I just want a mic to decide upon the next song, or to say, hey, i need to go to the bathroom. do you have any idea how frustrating it is to finally find someone good, then have to go to the bathroom, then as you sprint there and sprint back between songs, either they are already starting the song and you're missing it, or they think you left. Very Very Very frustrating.

Quality thread, would read again!
I really only play on XBL now with friends because we all only have ~50 songs, and probably only 30 that are common between us since we have different tastes in music, Enter Sandman and Welcome Home just got too repetitive after a while!
PS I wish my mom would pay for songs :(

And I could care less about the on-line features for RB2. I'm not going to find people to play with on-line as a band. I don't have that kind of time or energy to try and organize something like that. That is why i like on-line band play. If it were organized much better, then the experience wouldn't be a nightmare but enjoyable. The randomness of how the people are put together is laughable.

Imagine an online room where you could post that you want to play, your average playing level, your DLC, ratings, stats, etc. Then every other person on line see's that you have spots open for three more players. They submit a request to you, the leader can view the responders stats, and determine if they want to play with. This can happen. This is not some fantasy i'm making up here.

Now that I've actually read the thread...
Some of you guys "standards" (I hesitate to call it that) are just way too high to have fun in band quickplay. These forums make up a very small percentage of the rock band community... many people are not willing to spend a lot of money on DLC, or to put in enough time to reach expert.
Refusing to play with someone if they can't play on expert... I just don't understand that. I personally play expert on every instrument, but still.
Another thing I see people get pissed off about is the song choices people make. That's one reason I'm glad I don't play online. I genuinely like Enter Sandman (I love metallica, just not big on this song), Dani California and Welcome Home, and love Won't Get Fooled Again (that song beats the majority of DLC in my opinion), but would hate to have them overplayed.
To be blunt; don't get so pissy about how more casual players play a casual game. yes, this game, at it's heart, is made to appeal to the casual audience.

If you want to play casual, don't play on-line. Casual gamers don't play games like Halo or COD online. Casual gamers get killed in under 30 seconds. As I have already said, Rock Bands on-line comminity is set up for the elite, as most on-line games are. That is why there are leader boards. Huh?
There are plenty of people I would consider "casual" who play Halo. You know, the average dumb teenager who plays Halo every night, and actually do pretty good at it, because of Halo's non-existent learning curve. I would never call them elite. In fact, most casual gamers play shooters exclusively.

Random isn't bad, but at least give everyone the opportunity to see what DLC you, becauase I hate when people go right to random, and I never know about DLC. DLC is rarely included in random picks. What is mostly included are the blue icon songs, which, for the most part, i don't like.

There is, it's called the Band Wanted forum. Sure, it's not integrated into the game, but if you get enough people on your friends list you will always have someone to play with and can be leader more often. If you want to go out and find random folks for the mystery/excitement or whatever, you should understand that most people are not going to have DLC. It sounds like you already know how to fix the problem (play with friends) but you're still trying to do it the hard way.

Just do the math, guys. Most DLC has sold well under 100,000 copies. Rock Band has sold what, a couple of million copies? That means if a song has sold 50,000 copies, that's only one copy for every 40 gamers who play Rock Band. If it's a song like "Moving In Stereo" by the Cars (great song), which has only sold 12,000 copies on XBox and probably a third of that on PS3, that's roughly one copy for every 170 players.
Granted, the people playing online are probably more likely to have DLC, but the numbers are still pretty heavily stacked against randomly finding someone who has the same DLC you do.

People who do end up buying DLC probably end up on these forums eventually anyway so I don't think 80% is that exaggerated.

No reason to harp on him so hard. Kid is just a douche. Its not his fault he was born a little school girl, and his parents are terrible at raising their son to be a relatively decent, functioning member of society.
If its not evident of how big a douche he is here, youtube ordeal by fire, and just watch his half-assed videos. Then you realize just how alone and sad this kid is, and almost pity his lack of social abilities.

1. the millions of sales include Wii and PS2, which have no DLC or online at all
2. the dlcstats you speak of ARE WRONG. The stats record the number of xbox 360 users who have played the song on solo guitar while connected to the internet, and does not register people who mostly sing, mostly drum, mostly play with friends, or anyone who doesn't leave their console plugged into Live at all times. actual sales are at a bare minimum twice that high. Those numbers do not add up to the 15 million that is announced.
3. I love that BOOP-BOOP-BOOP-BOOP, BOOP BOOP, BOOP BOOP. BOOP-BOOP-BOOP BOOP, BEE-BOOP. part. Yay the Cars.
4. Very few people buy all DLC, because it gets absurdly expensive. Most DLC buyers get five to thirty of their favorite songs, which would generally focus on one genre. You may have a hundred songs, but if you're a Dead Head and the first guy you meet has the Thrash, NIN, and A7X songs, it doesn't really matter.
All we've ever been told is vague total sales, which last I heard were 3 million, and DLC sales at a few press releases, which have passed 15 million.

Yeah. No one likes competitions in music games. You're getting owned. Stop while you're behind.
Okay, lets review this. The issue is not about it being a problem to be competitive. The problem is that Online Band Quickplay is not a good forum for that. Nor do I really think it ought to be. While I would like more DLC matching services, I think if you want to be expert exclusive, the solution is and should be to find your own band mates and form the band that way. If that's how you want to play, that's fine. Make that experience happen. Don't tell people not to play online if they don't meet your "standards".
I was in a very frustrating band this evening. I was on vocals shifting from Medium to Expert. Had a solid expert guitar as band leader. Two kids playing together joined in to fill out the band. Frankly, they were awful. I don't think we finished a song because the kids were playing so poorly. A big part of the problem, though, is that they were trying to play WAY beyond their skills by selecting Expert Drums and Bass when they were a good Easy and average Medium players respectively. So yeah, that all sucked. But the leader was patient with them, which was good to see. He didn't kick them. Encouraged them to level down. Selected the common DLC, a rare sight in a 4-piece band. The real problem is that the kids imagined that they should play up to expert or hard when they just weren't prepared. They do that because of people like YOU slamming the "noobs" who may be kids like I saw or maybe adults with jobs and lives and who can't devote the time to level up. Like I am when I play guitar. I like that quickplay lets people of diverse skills play together. It emphasizes the cooperative nature of the game and lets less experience players get a glimpse into expert gameplay. If you want no part in that, fine. But the solution is there for you to find your own band and play online directly.
No reason you can't charge YOUR mom's.
Please, try to show an ounce of self-awareness before you post something like this in the future. It makes you look like a completely insufferable, irresponsible spoiled brat. Now that may be accurate, but I'd at least assume you wouldn't want to advertise that fact.
Oh, and just to reiterate the DLC point that's been made. THe problem is less that people don't have DLC, but that people have different DLC. If you have a 4-piece band, its horribly difficult to find a song everyone liked enough to buy. The "no one has DLC" whiners should remember that. Because I don't doubt there are some players looking at you and making the same complaint.

I know it'll never happen and it's probably impossible but it'd be cool if HMX figured out a way to allow people online to play free tracks if they haven't downloaded them and they're playing with someone who has. It would get the other members to say "hey where did this song come from?" then they go into the music store and they're like whoa dude there's like... 300 songs here!
I think thats the main problem with people not owning DLC is they just don't really know about it. I think it's advertised well on XBL but it could probably be marketed better. Like on the internet for example, I see Rockband Wii banners, why not a "next week on Rockband" banner on sites much like the ones you see on XBL.
Also hopefully Rockband 2 really makes the music store stand out and makes it so that you have to notice and that you want to go into it. I was over a friends house who plays rockband casually... he owns probably about 9 or 10 DLC songs. We were all over there playing and his girlfriend (singer) wanted to sing a song with a female singer that she knew really well... I suggested Brass in pocket. Neither of them had any idea it was available for DLC-- AND not only that but my friend turned the Xbox to the dashboard and went into the MARKETPLACE to download the song lol, I was like wtf are you doing you didn't even have to stop the game to download it!
Granted, that was probably less than two weeks after the music store patch was released but still...
The more people that are aware of DLC and the music store the better. 1 or 2 bucks to play one of your favorite tracks isn't unreasonable, I just think people don't know it exists. The average casual gamer isn't used to having new songs available every week- why would they be?
This fall there will be 22 free songs available for the game. I'm sure I'll continue to be amazed how many people online own NONE of them.

I have a small amount of DLC, maybe about 20 songs, and I don't see much of anything else I want to play. I don't have tons of money, and believe it or not, 5-10 dollars can be alot to spend on some songs you may not play much anyway.

I could care less how many DLC songs you have. The point is there needs to be a way to sort people like you out of searches when playing on-line, so people with similar DLC can play together. So I'm not really complaining about peoples lack of DLC, just the inability to sort them out.

Okay, first off, its much funnier if you just end at "Hey, quick question, have you ever been laid?". The rest just amounts to explaining your joke, its not expanding on it in any useful manner. Explaining jokes isn't funny. (Deconstructing them can be, though)
The other problem with that last bit is that it completely undercuts the sarcasm you offered to start. Are you being sarcastic or are you questioning my sexual virility? Pick one, and stick with it. They don't mix and match well.
And really, questioning my sexual prowess? Look, I get that you are young enough for that kind of stuff to be really effective at taking your pals down a peg, but I can assure you that it doesn't play very well outside of adolescent males. You'd have acquitted yourself much better had you simply ended with your first sarcastic sentences. Really, if you're not going to full on deconstruction route or absurdist satire, your comebacks should only be one or two sentences long with a unified purpose. It'll be far more effective that way and do much less to expose your maturity, or rather lack thereof.
Oh, and go rent Idiocracy and watch it. Just try not to sympathize with the wrong characters, 'kay?
