I get to be in Boston at the end of next week as part of my vacation.
Patriots have a buy week. World Series is over. Are there any cool museums, restaurants, events, or other attractions worth visiting? Never been there so I don't have a great familiarity with the area.
Also, I am trying to avoid the need for a rental car, so can anyone recommend a decent hotel within reasonable proximity to the subway system? I swear everything in the city is booked up.

I can guarantee Apples already had it in mind.
anyways, hit up Quincy Market http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/dining.html
also, there is tons of public transportation in boston, and a ton of hotels everywhere. Look for ones near Massachusetts Avenue.
1.Harmonix is on that street
2. accessible subways close by
3. pretty much get anywhere from near there. Also has the prudential near it, which is pretty neat to check out.

As far as hotels go if you could get into the Westin at Copley Place is a great place to stay. I used to work for that company and got to stay there for a discounted night with a friend and it was amazing and there is a "T" Subway stop right across the street. Copley Square is just an amazing place in general.
No matter how old you are the Children's Museum is awesome lol. Faneuil Hall, Boston Commons, Samuel Adams Brewery :D and if you get a chance catch a ride with the Boston Duck Tours.

The Prudential building is kinda cool for the view and MIT usually has some sort of nifty gallery/museum show going on. Dunno if you have an IMAX theater nearby, but Boston is the closest IMAX to me, being in Maine, so I like to try to hit that up when I'm in Boston. And Newbury street is bad ass if you have lots of money to spend, and home of the original Newbury Comics!

The science museum and aquarium are always good. If you are up by Harmonix the MIT Museum is right around there, it's kind of small but it's free or nearly free to get in if you have a student ID (from anywhere, not just MIT). Also Harvard Square has some good shops and restaurants and of course Harvard if you want to peruse the campus.
My favorite Boston restaurants are:
Somewhat upscale: Legal Seafood (in the Prudential mall, and elsewhere)
Good chain restaurant: Cheesecake Factory (also in the Prudential mall)
Inexpensive: Anna's Taqueria (Porter Square [one T stop past Harvard Square], Brookline, couple other places)
Inexpensive chain: Boloco (formerly The Wrap) (Newbury St., or Harvard Square, few other places)
And of course there is my favorite sport/team: The Bruins (who are actually doing well this year). They have home games on 11/8 and 11/10.

Everyone pretty much summed it up very well. I was going to say The New England Aquarium, and also the Museum of Science.
They got the IMAX theater right next to the Aquarium too, some cool stuff shown there.
Sam Adams brewery tours are always great! $2.00 for 4 types of beer, I'll take that any day!
Umm, let's see, if you go to the Fenway area, there's a place called Jillian's, I love that place. One floor is a club (which I don't bother with) but they got a floor with Pool tables, a bar, and ping pong tables. Then up above another floor they got a bowling alley with a bar and a pretty cool lounge area.
Fanueil Hall, Quincy Market area is cool to check out. Plenty of bars in the area. I'm sure you can get the Celtics on a tv :)
Pretty much if you like to drink, you'll find places to go lol

I went there on holiday a year back (I'm from Australia) - and I fell in love with the place - it's an amazing, incredibly friendly city (compared to some of my other stops in the U.S. - jeez), and of everywhere I've ever been, it's the only place I could ever see myself moving to in a heartbeat.
I'll echo Marty McFly about Jillian's - I'm pretty sure it was the same place I went to, and, it's probably one of the most tourist-y things to do there, but I did love walking the Freedom Trail, gives you a great chance to see the city on foot.
As for a hotel - it definitely wasn't anything extravagant, but my wife & I stayed at the Mid-Town Hotel on Huntington, and there was a nice little diner downstairs as well.

also see if the blueman group is doing any shows, if you've never been to one of their shows, I highly recommend it. Its usually at the Wang theater

Thanks for the suggestions, that should give me plenty of ideas to start with.
I am totally taken aback by this whole Harmonix suggestion. I had *no* idea that their offices were in the area... what a fortunate coincidence.
 <- this is my shocked expression

I actually ride my bike by the Harmonix studios a couple times a week. I sent an e-mail to them, hoping to get a tour, but never heard back. I have stopped a couple of times, there is a desk with security guys and a sign that says, "Harmonix ID required". ;-)

Yeah, that security guy gave me all sorts of problems.
I told him I was there to see Sean, and he couldn't figure out how to spell "S E A N" even after I spelled it out for him... I caught him looking in the names beginning with P. :D
Fortunately Heather saved me from him.
Can't believe you found this post, it is way old. :)

This thread is as old as dirt.
Don't kid us, you knew the studios were in Boston ;) Wouldnt it say so on the Rock Band Launch invitation?
Anyways, did you end up hitting any other spots in Boston?

Yeah, the day I arrived I had about 6 hours to visit a few things around downtown Boston. I got out at South Station and walked in a huge circle around downtown, visiting the aquarium, Faneuli Market, got lost and walked over nearly to Cambridge, and then back to South Station.
I didn't have as much time as I wanted due to the location of my hotel. It was about 45 minutes on a commuter train and then a 60 to 90 minute walk to the hotel from the train stop. (special thanks to the idiot travel website that listed that hotel as "easily accessible to downtown")

Yea that was dumb. Should've just gotten a hotel in Boston. Fanueil Marker is pretty cool, haven't been to the aquarium since I was like 8. Glad you had a good time, should've walked down the street from HMX and said hi :p

According to the cab driver, there was some huge employment fair in the city, which brought in about 30,000 people from all over New England.
That would explain why I couldn't get a hotel for the life of me. I literally searched 50+ hotels in Boston and they were all at capacity while I was there... ridiculous.

Oh well
