I am now convinced Rock Band is delayed in Canada

I hope that I am wrong, but all of the "evidence" suggests otherwise.

I contacted Wal Mart Canada, and they told me that there is nothing in the system as of yet. With less than three weeks to go, you would think that something would be known by the one of the largest retailers in the country.

Futureshop and Best Buy do not have the game listed on their web site.

Amazon.ca only has the stand alone game. No bundle listed at all.

It looks like we won't get the game on the 20th. I have two questions.

1. Why the (potential) delay? Systems and games are almost always simulaneously released in North America. What is the hold up on this game?

2. If not the 20th, when??!!

I was also told the 20th. And since the EB Games managers recently had a conference where they discussed (amongst other things) RockBand, you would think they would have told them NOT to tell customers if it was going to be delayed.

yah my eb games where i have it pre ordered are also saying the 20th, but are saying they are unsure on the price at this stage. Generally they are pretty conservative about giving out their release dates. I'm hoping the employee isn't just quoting the US release date and assuming. There really is no way to tell when its going to be released unfortunately, but I wouldnt look into wal mart not knowing too much.

Actually, they can charge more if they want. There are fees for importing the game into Canada. They usually get passed on to the consumer. Hopefully it'll only be like 10$ more though. I can deal with that. I haven't checked individual games and stuff, but a PS3 is actually cheaper in Canada...

As for french packaging, yes, it can be a reason for delay, however, all companies involved have released numerous things before and I'm sure they were all aware of Canadian packaging laws, so hopefully it won' be an issue!

Yeah given that its now 19 days until release I'm worried as well. I think Harmonix/MTV might be waiting until the last minute to see how many units they can manufacture before announced Canadian availability. I hope they make it. As for places like Best Buy they don't even have The Simpson's Game for Xbox 360 in their system, even though I bought it from them last night. They are horrible for that kind of stuff.

Well anyone remember the release of guitar hero 1 in canada? It was a total mess.. At that time, I was having a preorder at ebgames and they told me they'll have it on the release date.. but it didn't happen! I don't remember how many weeks it took to get here, but it was very long and frustrating cause I was really hyped with this game. Everyone was blaming the Quebec langage law (I live in Quebec) for the delay, but it has nothing to do with that... cause I when I got my GH1 bundle, it was only in english...

The reason for the delay was that they weren't able to produce enough copies and didn't had any distributor. If they aren't releasing individual instruments at the release date, I think we've got the same problem here. For my part, I hope that it will get here before christmas! You better be realistic or you'll probably be a lot dissapointed and frustrated...

However, I don't think they'll have the distributor problem so hopefully, we'll get our copy near the release date..

i told her no pre orders are available and she recommended amazon.ca as a source to see arrival date, amazon says nov.20 still so we should be good...

However, I don't think we're going to see a delay like this. There was no delay for GH2 or GH3 for that matter, they were in the system for the date, and were delivered. With any product, there is a risk of delay and shipments. However, with a product like Rock Band, which is on many radars, not like GH1 was, I have no fears that it will be delayed. I can't wait till the 20th.

I prepaid GH3 at EB games for $130.On the release date they were charging $99 for the game and had to refund money to there customers who prepaid.

You can order it from the rockbandstore.com, but it says that shipping is 7 to 10 business days.

Add to that the US Thanksgiving holiday, as well as the shipping delays at the border. Who knows how long it would take to get here?

Edit: Although I was at my local EB last night shopping around for GH3 (I really want a bass guitar for Rock Band at launch, and there are a few songs I really really want to play that don't appear to have screwed up charts) and while I was putting down a "pre-order" for that, he reconfirmed Nov 20th for Rock Band. The guy's always been pretty forward with giving me delay information, so if there was anything speculated (on their end) or announced, I'm hopeful he'd have told me.

Finally though, I think I have a copy preordered at a US location.

To ship it here in a timely fashion will cost in the range of 200 dollars, because of the weight and dimensions of the box. Regular shipping is only 25 dollars, but will most likely be held at the border for a long period of time because of the crazy amounts of items being shipped up to Canada. (Go loonie go!)

One of the distributors we use gave us a sellsheet that specifcally listed the game as being on our shelves for Nov. 23rd (which our manager put into a flyer ad that reads 'Nov. 23th' ((:D )))...

However, here in the video game world, I've learned that anything can happen before release.

They mention that the release dates of 11/20 (360/PS3) and 12/18 (PS2) are for NORTH AMERICA. This was a press release from 10/29 so it wasn't that long ago.

Since this was an official press release from a publically traded company can we take this as meaning it will be released at the same time throughout North America?

I am from Montreal and, just like you guys, I am really getting worried about the game being delayed in Canada. The fact that the game isn't listed yet on BestBuy.ca or Futureshop.ca really does not bode well.

Since I can't wait, I tried to import the game from the US using ebgames and Amazon. In both case, once I reached the check out it told me that this game can't be shipped internationnaly.

Once I realized that, I jusmped ON eBay and found one guy shipping the bundle to Canada for 35 USD. I took a chance and pre-ordered from him, and I even added an extra 20$ to rush the delivery..

Hopefully I will get my bundle shortly after the 20.

If you can't wait for the game just like I do, I suggest you start thinking about getting the game from the US.

Did you specifically ask him "What is the release date for Rock Band?" ? That's what I did, and he also told me he didn't think they had one, but upon checking he went "Oh wait, we do have a date". You have to get him to look in the database.

I can't beleive that no one from Rock Band / Harmonix can not come into this discussion and solved this once and for all and give us a date. I never seen a situation like this before, always reserved my Game at EB and alway had a date of release and price. Were now 2 weeks for release date and still uncertain. Even GH3 had a release date and price weeks in advance and respect it. I just learned the price yesterday and dates are still fkloating out there, might come out or might not sir were sorry... According to the two EBGames stores in Sherwood Park, Alberta, the release date is still November 20th but no price has been set yet. It sounds to me like they're still deciding how close to the US MSRP they'll make it. The manager believed that it would likely sell for CDN$199.99, though there was the slight chance they might sell it AT the US price point because of the high Canadian dollar.

Either way, most of the news sites are still claiming that November 20th is the North American release date, not solely the American one. I don't think that this far into the game, any of the larger publishing companies would have any issues meeting Canadian packaging requirements.

I think the main reason they haven't said anything yet is, they are still unsure. They believe they can get it out to Canada on Nov. 20th but there's still a chance that they might not be able to make that date. So instead of disappointing people by saying it's coming on the 20th they are waiting unitl they know FOR SURE. I would expect they will find out sometime this week and give a date then.

I'm hopeing it's soon though....so I can pre-order it from the states.

I've polled the big box stores around the GTA and so far Best Buy, Futureshop, and HMV all say that they're getting it on time for release day, and aren't taking pre-orders.

Let's keep a positive thinking here ..... If everybody else is getting it on Nov 20 EBGame won't be the exception and will make it happen the same day.

Hi everyone, first time Canadian poster, long-time Harmonix admirer...

DYoungEagle has a point, and in thinking along those lines, I realized that the confusion around the Canadian release date could be traced back to the press release discussing the North American date of sale. The press release states that the game will be released in North America on Nov. 20th for the Xbox 360 and PS3. However, it's stated to be released for the PS2 on Dec. 18th, which could be why we're seeing some confusion as to the actual release date here in Canada. Like DYoungEagle said, it's probably one person who keyed in a batch release date for Rock Band in EB and Gamestop stores, which is why it's showing up in the system as such.

I went to pre-pay my copy over this weekend, and the clerk at EB told me that the date was changed to Dec. 20th in their system, but even he wasn't all that confident with the change, stating (his words, not mine) that 'they see this type of date change a lot'. Take from that what you will.

Anyway, we'll know for sure in 13 days, now will we? 'Expect the worst, hope for the best' is how it goes, I think.

Regrettably, it's not just EB Games.

I used to work at Blockbuster so the other day I went into my old job and talked to my boss about it. I asked him when Rock Band for the 360 comes out.

"November 20th" he said
"The system still tells you that?"

he checked.

"Oh. Now it's telling me December 10th."
"Are you sure you're not looking at the PS2 version?"
"No, that's not even in the system. 360."

...So... it's not even the same date EB Games has, but for what it's worth it is another retailer that not only doesn't have Nov. 20 as the date of release, but changed it after it already had Nov. 20. I'm lazy and don't want to have to drive down to Buffalo, but... I'm thinking that's just what I'll be doing.

Right so if we stack up the evidence, we have:

1. EB Games and Blockbuster give out varying dates between the 8th and 20th of December, but used to have Nov. 20
2. Futureshop and Best Buy don't aknowledge the game's existence, but some people claim they have seen it on "upcoming releases" billboards under Nov. 19
3. Microplay says Nov. 20
4. HMX press release said Nov. 20 in North America
5. HMX is ignoring us for some reason
6. People who called in at Harmonix got told it shouldn't have been delayed

So, we know because of 5 that there is something funny going on here. Quite possibly, the guys at HMX are scrambling around to find some final information, though it's still odd that nobody hasen't even told us they are yet.

I think from the rest of them though, it'd be pretty safe to say that there is either an actual delay, the length of which is uncertain but certainly not 1 month, or there has been some confusion with the EB Games and Blockbuster providers which led them to change their dates to estimates.

It's still really frustrating that nobody from Harmonix has posted here yet though.

Well, just to continue adding to the confusion here:

Upon calling several EB Games in my area (Ottawa) I have been told the release date has changed to December 20.

Being as distressed about that as most people, I called up Microplay on Hunt Club Road and they informed me that their system still said November 20, but "rumblings" from their suppliers suggested that it may be pushed back due to accessory shortage. Now, upon attending a second Microplay and speaking to the attendent there (who is a good friend of mine) I found out that they had not heard of such rumblings and their sheet indicated that it was still scheduled for release on "November 21". OKay... whatever, she's a reliable source, I'm not going to question her about it. I put my name on the reserve list so that if it does come in on that date, I'll be getting it.

Regardless, still fearful of a delay, I attended both Future Shop and Best Buy to see what they had to say on the issue. On the coming soon boards in the lobby of both stores it listed Rock Band as coming out on November 19.

Take that as you will. This whole situation is nerve-wracking to say the least

Ok, I am also Canadian, in Manitoba...anyways, I called basically every place in town that would likely carry RB, yesterday...and this was my result.

EB - Dec 20

Microplay - The guy said Nov 20 was on his Nov release list...but I convinced him to look it up to make sure, and it was no longer on his Nov release list when he checked.

Future Shop - The guy said they go by their website, which I can't seem to find RB listed on.

Wal mart - I work there, but they don't have release dates on their systems.

One other place that I can't remember said Dec 18.

anywhere else MAY carry RB, but likely not, so I didn't bother.

So basically, nowhere lists Nov 20 anymore, but nowhere seems to have the same date either, so either there's some big screwup, and we'll still get it Nov 20 like we're supposed to, or there's a huge miscommunication between everyone. Here's hoping for Nov 20. :D

EDIT: Going to make a couple more calls, right now. I'll update this post with dates I'm told at those places.

Blockbuster says Nov 23 (Most likely someone guessing) because I just called 3 other Blockbusters and they all said Dec 18th
Rogers Video doesn't even have a date listed.

Cancel your pre-order. There is no 'official' Canadian price yet, pre-order it somewhere else. No sense in getting ripped off like we so often do. Hi, i am a first post replyer from canada in alberta and i just pre-ordered Rock Band from EB Games and they said it could be delayed until december 20th but that this was just a rumour he heard there had been no proof to back it up so anything could happen.

Now i think that there is a problem with a december 20th release date because almost all games are released on tuesdays the latest example of something different happening was when Best Buy released Call Of Duty 4 a day later.

I think this whole rumour has stemmed from EB games and that it was just used as a precaution and everybody else is just following suit to be safe and not dissapoint anybody. I also think that we should take no postings from Harmonix as kind of a back up to the idea that there is no delay and there just ignoring these rumours because everybody is finding proofs to back up the november 20th release and none to back up a delay so I myself am gonna hpe for a november 20th release date and keep my pre-order as i only had to put down a 5$ payment.

Also someboy said that Best Buy posted a nov.19 release date that is the receiving date EB games also put a day early release date for COD4 and its just the day the get them received and they sometimes get them early enough to sell them that day, but its doubtful.

But please i know i have made a mistake somewhere in my explanation so please help me to make it as clear as we can to support a NOVEMBER 20th release date.

As I have said countless times, I hope I am wrong about the delay up here.

But, I don't think that I am.

1. No Canadian retailer has stated that the bundle WILL be released on Nov. 20.

2. EB and Blockbuster used to have Nov. 20th as the date. Now, both have moved to Dec.

3. As I mentioned earlier, I contacted Walmart Canada. They told me that they are not able to order the game to stock their shelves yet. (No date for Canadian stores.)

4. I contacted a major website who has dedicated a significant amount of coverage to this game. I was told that they would look into the Canadian delay, or the potential of one. They got back to me the following day and said that there is no Canadian date yet, but that they were trying hard to make sure that we get it soon after the US date. (Or something like that. Look up my post earlier in this thread.)

5. With just 10 days left, Amazon.ca, Futureshop, and Bestbuy are not offering bundles online.

So, why no official confirmation of the possible delay? I don't know. But, there has not been a denial either.

If you still can, preorder this game from somewhere in the US. If it comes out here on Nov. 20, we can all laugh about this whole mess. If it doesn't, at least you will still be rocking!

It sounds to me that you can't get an answer on the "delay" in Canada because there is no "delay" in Canada. There's never been a firm release date.

Maybe it would be more productive to change the conversation from talking about a "delay" (which there isn't one, and has a negative connotation that no business is going to admit to casually) to asking for a firm Canadian release date.

I bet that those groups that you're talking to would be more likely to respond to, "I'm looking for the firm release date for the Rock Band video game in Canada. I'm really looking forward to it." Instead of asking them about "delays."

That hasn't stopped anyone else from repeatedly posting "HARMONIX HATES US".

I keep checking the thread to see if there are any updates of substance and all I'm met with is the same "Sean is the devil, Harmonix lied to us" commentary over and over again. I apologize for expressing my displeasure with as much hyperbole and frequency as everyone else expressing their displeasure in this thread.

This is a very complex conspiracy... with many players...

#1) EBAY - What better way to make a ton of money than to have a limited game at launch to spur tons of bidding wars to make mass profits.

#2) COURIER COMPANIES - Large bulky packages shipped to tens of thousands of Canadians equal mass profits.

#3) HARMONIX - Harmonix is run by "THE GRINCH" What better way to destroy the christmas spirit of Canadians then to deny them the ability to rock out over the holiday season.

#4) NEVERSOFT - Forces all those that waited for rockband on the 20th to purchase GHIII instead thus filling the void for the missing guitar in the rockband set.


I really do think this all boils down to the Grinch that is bent on destroying the Christmas spirit of Canadians. The grinch must also have shares in Courier companys and ebay along with the royalties recieved from GHIII :eek:

December 17 has been the official release date announced for canada fo xbox/ps3 versions. However, my local ebgame(s) say december 20. so it seems as though Canadians will be waiting another month!

Thanks to a massive windstorm here on Canada's west coast I've been unable to access the net for a few days... and now I find out that the delay is official. Is anyone able to provide the actual link where EA/Harmonix confirms it in their own words?

If what I gather is true, that French packaging requirements are the main reason for the delay, as a western Canadian I'm tempted to state that Quebec is truly a boil on Canada's ass... but I'll resist the temptation for now.

I'm #3 or #4 in line for a pre-order at my local EB so as long as I have a bundle in my hands on the 17th of Dec. or thereabouts I'll live with this very dissappointing news.

There is still no official release date in Canada and none of the three companies involved has made an official announcement. The credible verification of the delay is in the form of an oral communication from an anonymous source at MTV games to Shacknews, reported here:

The December 17 date is hardly written in stone, and it isn't clear whether that's even supposed to be a target shipping date, a firm shipping date, a target release date, or a firm release date. The wording is vague, but it sounds suspiciously like the earliest feasible shipping date, which in turn suggests there is a good chance Canadians won't see Rock Band until 2008. Of course, this is mere speculation, because, again, none of the companies involved have made any official announcements. The explanation that language regulations delayed the release a month did not come from an official source and is widely considered to be absolute nonsense.

I'm not a public relations expert, but it seems to me that the firms involved might salvage a little goodwill from Canadian customers by issuing an official release date and an official apology for both the delay and the inexplicable failure to inform customers of the delay. At the very least, there should be a sticky message on this forum announcing the game is delayed in Canada, so we don't have thousands of Canadians hitting these boards over the next two weeks posting messages wondering where their games are.

Rock Band is in fact delayed until December 17 (which you all know has been confirmed already). As Sean stated a few days ago, the issue is related to the required bilingual packaging. Before everybody asks, "why didn't Harmonix think of this?" It is something we (and our partners) have already taken into account. The truth of the matter is that a game of this magnitude (literally... 3 peripherals, and the package is freakin' huge!) has never been done before. While the delay is regrettable, difficulties with the packaging and retailing the product is almost to be expected (I really feel for small shops trying to fit all these on the shelves ;D).

For now, I ask everyone to continue being patient, even though you may be upset by this news. We have people working literally around the clock to make sure this game comes to you guys as soon as humanly (to squash another rumor, no we are not robots) possible.
