View Full Version : Ideas to add weight to the guitar

I haven't felt the guitar yet, but there seems to be quite a few complaints regarding the light weight feel of it.
If it does end up bugging me, my initial thought to add weight to it would be with modeling clay. Open it up and shove the clay into open areas within the guitar.
Clay is used often to add weight to turntables (improving isolation) so I thought it might work well for this too.
Any ideas you have as to how to add weight to the guitar?

Well, you can get some rope, tie it to either end of the guitar, and hang a 50lb dumbbell from it...

when i went to play rockband at bestbuy, the guitar felt lighter than i expected it to be, i though it was going to feel as heavy as the real guitar, but it wasn't as light as pillow either. The weight of the guitar shouldn't affect your actual gameplay, if you're complaining about weight being the reason you failed a song then you are no different from the noobs crying lag every time they play any fps online.
In summation, the guitar is lighter than i expected but it should not really make a difference.

If you don't like the guitar weight, it's mindlessly trivial to open it up and put, as stated, clay into the empty cavities. I did this with my PS2 guitars a long time back, but I used lead weights.

I disagree. Weight can affect gameplay much like controller shape/size can. It's a feel issue. If it doesn't feel right it can be difficult to adjust to.
If the thing feels fragile around your shoulder it may lack any real comfort.

Um, sorry?
Look at it this way, if the guitar was significantly heavier, strumming would be A LOT ****ING EASIER.
Think about it. As it stands, the guitar is probably light enough that it moves slightly when you press the bar in either direction, that's wasted energy. If it were heavier, it would resist that movement much more.

sorry, but i just can't see the weight makeing that much of a difference. I usually play sitting down so I guess weight difference doesn't affect me as much since i don't rely on the weight of the guitar to hold it still while strumming.

oh the irony
I got slated on these very forums not that long ago when I suggested that the guitar should have removable weights so that people could make it as light or as heavy as they wanted.
But anyway
What I did with my GH2 guitar was this.
I had an old broken 2 piece flight controller that had some steel weights in the bases of it to prevent it from sliding around in use.
I took those weights out of it before I threw it away.
These are just pieces of steel approx 2 - 3 mm thick, 1.2 cm wide and 5 or 6 cm long.
using double sided foam tape I stuck some together and then opened up the guitar and using the same tape stuck them to the inside of the body.
I put 3 at the top of the body, 3 at the bottom of the body and 2 in the middle of the neck to balance the guitar out better.
This tape sticks hard so they will never shake loose no matter how hard i am on the guitar.
In total it added 160 grams of weight to the guitar.
It made it feel a whole lot steadier when playing it especially during fast cords changes as the light guitar had too much of a tendency to move around for my liking.

Another thing you may be able to do...
Visit tire or auto dealers. All tire shops have a wheel balancer. What am I getting at. They will also have weights that you can stick inside. They should have the weights that have a tape on one side. Just stick them in there and you're golden! Thats what I plan on doing if the weight is that much of a factor. Doubt it is though. The SG was fine and I'm pretty sure its going to weigh more than that.

That is a really good idea.
I actually doubt it will be a problem for me either, but if it is, this seems like it could be the easiest solution.

Tell me more about that modeling clay. I'm assuming it's sticky enough not to move around a whole lot, but maybe you're doing something else?
The only problem I've noticed, is if I get a little too caught up in the guitar solos, I sometimes lose the strap off my shoulder and get tangled up in it(I know, I'm a loser). I'm thinking the extra weight might help keep that shoulder strap taut.

Well, it sticks really well if there are crevices, etc for it to be pushed up into. However, I don’t know what the inside of the guitar will look like. I would think though that there would be some spots in there to cram it in tight.
Like I said it works great for turntables, but they just sit there, unlike the guitar which will be flung around at times.

wheel balancing tape weights seems like a perfect idea (assuming you feel you need them) - here's a place that has them:

Umm... he wasn't repeating your suggestion. He complemented your idea--saying that it was perfect--and then provided a link such that people could purchase the weights to follow through with your suggestion.

I had no issues with strumming up on the strat. The strum bar requires far less force than the weight of the guitar. In any case, as is the point of this thread, if your prefer a heavier guitar there are ways to accomplish that.

Didn't you suggest the weights be included? That's the difference: people (like me) don't want to pay for accessories that we aren't going to use (especially if it increases the shipping weight. I think it's great people plan to add weight to the guitar, but I thought it was a bad idea to ship weights to everybody who buys Rock Band.
