do you have to have all 4 players play in BWT or can you just have like a friend over and yourself play while the other spots are filled in?

You only need 2 people to play BWT.

I don't really know, but I have a question as well that doesn't deserve a new thread.
If you're in BWT and you have 4 band members, can they interchange instruments at any point.
Ex.
Im going to make up a scenario
Lets just say this is my first band I make, and this is how we set up the musicians
Me - Drums
Older sister - Sing
Young sister - Bass
Friend - Guitar
But we don't want to play our specific instrument the entire time, can we have our in game character play more than one instrument, or if we wanted to play a different instrument, would we have to use each others characters?

From what we've been told, there are only going to be 2 ways to switch instruments:
1) Just physically switch off, but you'll be playing someone else's character
2) Create another band where everyone's character is playing a different instrument and play with that band when you want to switch around
My wife and I, alone, will probably create 3 or 4 bands. Then another couple bands for when friends come over to play Band World Tour with us.
Though, we have been told that you can switch characters in and out of your band at any time, except during an actual set you're playing. The only catch is that whoever you originally designate as the Band Leader always has to be logged in and playing for that band to be played. So if you create the band and you make your character the band leader and a drummer, then you will always have to play drums when you play that band (unless you don't mind letting someone else play as your character and you play as theirs or bring in some other character of yours you've created).
Also of note is that each character you create can be a member in up to 10 different bands and also the leader of up to 10 different bands.

i actually though after you beat a setlist and your back home if you go to your "practice space" you can switch your characters instrument
and i know you can physically switch instruments mid setlist but you will be someone elses character

Bummer, also, does anyone know depending on how well you(a single player, not the entire band, but part of a band) can earn bonus rewards by performing well during a setlist. If so, that will really suck because if you're playing an instrument that isn't to your character and you do well and earn something that won't carry over to your own.

I'm pretty sure it was Sean that said your character is tied to the instrument you pick. The band would get the money, stars, fans which is tied to the band leader. And I could be wrong but I believe the only "personal" reward you would get playing in a band is achievements which is tied to your Gamertag.
I'll look for quotes and will edit if I find them.

And there's obviously the method of 1 person playing as 2 characters in BWT mode (sing/guitar)...which I'm not quite talented enough to do yet, however I will definitely be trying for fun though.
