View Full Version : Past setlists as DLC?

I thought of a question recently;

What is the likelihood of the full setlists from Guitar Hero 1, 2, and 80s being put up as DLC?

Personally, I think that there's about a 90% chance of past setlists being put up as DLC. I mean, Harmonix already has half of the notecharts done (guitar and bass), all that remains would be making charts for drums and vocals. Plus, that would sell like crazy on DLC.

Just wonderin what everyone else thought.

I read this and my first thought was actually, "Wow, I didn't know that this band knew how to chart out their own music in this type of format."

I've seen tons of ideas like this on the forums. I'd be happy to have some of those songs on rock band. Can you say A7X?

I would practically kill for this. Granted, I'd much rather just be able to use my PS3 Strat for the older GH games, but if that's not possible, DLC is the next best thing.

Ok, yes, we all would love for them to be on Rock Band.
Now, getting back to my original question, how possible do you think it is that the past setlists are gonna be up for DLC eventually?

I'd think maybe down the road, if they get enough requests, or read any of the thousand posts about this on the forums. But initially, I think they want to avoid repeating anything, because it might send the wrong message. "What, they want me to buy crap I've already played?" "This sucks, they've already run out of ideas for songs, and are using old ones again" and on and on.

"What, they want me to buy crap I've already played?"

I would hope that people look at it more reasonably than this. It's more along the lines of, "Oh, cool! I can still play the old songs that I love, which I can't play any more because it's on an old console!"

...then again, I may be in the minority there. My PS2 died, and I'm not about to go and buy a new one. :(

Don't get me wrong, I want some of the old songs as DLC (I started a similar thread a few weeks ago mentioning this), but I just think a lot of other people don't see it that way. Nobody likes paying for the same thing multiple times. Granted, the RB ones are different (most likely a master track, with drum and vocals), but that doesn't mean people won't feel a bit weird about it.

I gave GH1 and 2 to my brother, along with the guitar, because I couldn't play them on PS3. I didn't bother trying to buy that controller adapter, because I heard it didn't work well. I might pick it up anyway, because I think it works well enough to use for bass, and I can get my stuff back from my brother.

But anyway, the other reason I want old songs in the game is because I'm lazy, and hate having to swap games in and out, to play the different songs. Having them all in one place would be nice. I hope DLC doesn't disappoint.

LOL :p

Anyway, that would be awesome to have GH packs like GH II had (except have them from GH I, II, and 80's, and make 'em cost less than 500 credits... please. ;) ) Also, have more songs in them than the 3 songs GH packs usually had.

Bonus tracks. Especially GHI bonus tracks. They were the best songs in that game (and that's saying a lot next to Ziggy Stardust, Killer Queen, and Texas Flood).

Yeah, in time I see it coming. I mean, if Nintendo could do it with all their old games, I think it's becoming a pretty popular idea now.

Really for what it would take to get these songs into the game they may as well never have had them before.

I do think your right about the backlash of "I already bought this". What I do see happening is putting out groups of songs (Like Grateful Dead) or albums, Boston's Boston album would give us More Then A Feeling. So if they put out a group of songs from say Lynard Skynard and include Free Bird you would have a choice as well as songs you never had as opposed to putting out a GH pack "Here, have a bunch of songs you already have".

There are a bunch of GH songs I'd love to have. Time will tell...

I made this thread a few days ago and it went to isht real quick. I would love to have the GH tracks available. If for no other reason, to finally be able to ditch the PS2.

I really don't care to see GH tracks as DLC in Rock Band. I'd rather the team spend their time coming up with new content than rehashing the old stuff. I mean, yeah, you'd be able to play drums and sing along in Rock Band, but still, meh.

Just to recap an important point from the last thread about this. Just because they liscensed it in GH1,2,80s doesn't mean they still have the rights to put it into any other game. So any of these old songs will have to be released under the same price as new songs, and will take the same amount of time to put into the new game.

There's an attraction to this idea that these songs are just lying around Harmonix's offices waiting to be used, but it's fantasy. That's not how it works.

That out of the way, I personally don't mind the idea of some of the songs making their way back. But I don't think these should be a priority over getting new songs that will be just as good, if not better and fresh. Ozzy and Black Sabbath have a lot of great songs for Rock Band, and taking the time to bring back Bark at the Moon over something else would be a shame.

Ok, I see that they don't have the songs and whatnot "lying around". What I kinda meant was that they already know how popular these songs were, so why not give em a second chance. I understand that there would be a lot of work involved to bring those tracks into Rock Band, but it would be so awesome. I'd buy all three past sets in a heartbeat. :D

I totally understand what you're saying, I just disagree. Some of the songs on GH1 and 2 are absolutely totally awesome. But for me, that's because there wasn't anything else. They were the best of what was available. Some of them are truely the best songs ever, but that's a small list from each game. For a lot of those artists, there are songs I would rather see come out. I'd rather see Tom Sawyer for Rock Band then YYZ, for example. There's a whole dozen songs I'd rather see from Aerosmith then Last Child again. And then there's a whole list of songs from those games that I just don't care about at all. I'll be fine never playing Freya again, or Laid to Rest, or some of the indie tracks like Yes We Can.

So like I said, the occassional song, sure. But all 70+ songs from GH2 for download? That's significant, and time consuming, and means that there's 70+ other songs we won't see that at least would have been new and fresh. Of course I have my little list of songs I want to see make a return. Like Godzilla or War Pigs. But if I had to choose, I'm gonna pick something new and awesome then old and awesome.

Schultzy

Ok, maybe releasing them all at once would be pretty time consuming, so maybe it'd be better if the released them into smaller chunks, perhaps by what teir they were in. Either way, it'd be sweet.

My guess is that we WILL see GH1 and GH2 songs as DLC for Rock Band...

...as tracks on the albums they are from.

I can totally see The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust being a DLC album (PLEASE!!), and thus we'd get a chance to play Ziggy again.

I think that's the only way we'll see old songs. The fact the HMX liked songs enough to put them into GH1 and GH2 is a sure sign that they'd most likely enjoy doing the entire album, and I'd venture a guess that it's more cost effective than re-licensing old individual tracks from previous games.

That said, most of those songs were covers, so who knows. But my best guess is that a lot of the DLC albums will be albums that contain a song from a previous GH game - which is FINE by me!

...and licensing, MoCap, lighting, animations, etc...

Other than the licensing, if they have to do all that I can pretty much guarantee they wont be releasing DLC weekly.

Without having inside knowledge I would have to guess that (in the GH games) the animation of everything but the hands is pretty much a series of canned animations. The Fingering/Strumming appears to be in some small sense procedural. Perhaps with hints in the note chart?

I would love to see GH, GH2, GH80s song packs for DLC. I'd personally pay $20 for 80s alone.

I think I would like the GH1 tracks more than anything. Even "I Love Rock N Roll" would be great, now that you could sing it as well.

Well after today's revelations, at least we know it's possible to get previous GH songs through DLC. Exciting stuff.
