Just figured I'd start a thread for those of us who refuse to upgrade to the "Next Gen". I just officially pre-ordered the PS2 version of RB and am keeping my fingers crossed that the game will measure up to its 360 and PS3 cousins.

So sound off, if you're dusting off your obsolescent Sony's for Rock Band!

Oh, and my band name, "The Last Generation".

Yup. I'm not even getting instruments. I'll reuse my wired SGs, and if my wife wants to sing, she can use our KR mic. I don't care about drums right now, and if I ever do, I'll just pick up the drum set for PS2 down the road.

If RB comes out for Wii eventually, I'll probably pick it up. (Do you hear that, Harmonix/MTV/EA ??) :) But for now, I'm last gen all the way.

And no dusting off required here, I'm still playing GH1, 2 and 80s.

Did you get instruments, Bullseye?

My only beef with the PS2 version is it's not actually made by Harmonix. :(

So I may get it later but I'm gonna have to wait.

If you don't have the extra $350 I can understand it, but Rock Band made by outsourced developers and, perhaps more importantly, without DLC seems like a poor investment to me. Half the reason I'm psyched about the game is being able to double the track listing over the next 6 months - Hell, almost for Who's Next alone.

It's being outsourced. To whom I don't remember.

This is the first I've heard of it being outsourced. That being said, I'm not as worried about it as I would have been after seeing GHIII on the PS2 which, I think, turned out great.

An IGN article - doens't mentioned who's doing the coding, though:

PS2 Gets Rock Band Ticket
Sony's older system gets its own version of Rock Band.
by Nix

August 22, 2007 - PS2 owners, you wanna rock? Now you can. A PlayStation 2 version of the highly-anticipated musical game Rock Band has been officially revealed as part of MTV Games and Electronic Arts' announcement on the European plans of the title. US plans for this PS2 version were not listed in the press release, and it is unknown what kind of instrument package/packages the PS2 version will be released in (the PS3/360 versions have been listed at retail in two variations, one with just the game and one with a full suite of drumset, guitar and mic, although neither release has been confirmed by the publisher since plans are still in discussion).

The PS2 version of Rock Band will be a slightly (or significantly) different game from the next-gen console versions. This version has new game elements specific to the platform in development, although what exactly those new modes are is unknown at the moment. It's likely that those new modes are added as incentive against the lost online features in the PS2 version -- we may or may not see online play with the PS2 version (depending on what the developer's plans are), but downloadable content is a big part of the PS3/360 version and unfortunately is very unlikely to be replicated on PS2 since it has no secured way of downloading musical content. That said, all versions of the game ship with a huge number of on-disc tracks from the greatest in great rock music, and 10 new tracks were announced as part of the announcement (including Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter," Deep Purple "Highway Star," The Clash "Should I Stay or Should I Go," Faith No More "Epic," Smashing Pumpkins "Cherub Rock," Radiohead "Creep," Beastie Boys "Sabotage," Jet "Are You Gonna Be My Girl," OK Go "Here It Goes Again," and Nine Inch Nails "The Hand That Feeds.")

A Wii version of Rock Band had been rumored (and spoken of by the developers in hypothetical terms and in if-and-when ambitions), but only the PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have been officially announced. We expect to hear more from developer Harmonix about its plans for potentially including the Wii in the Rock Band franchise plans sometime after the lead versions are released.

The PS2 version will ship sometime after the 360/PS3 versions' Holiday 2007 release, likely somewhere early in 2008 along with the European releases.

Meh, GH is the new Madden so sales don't mean sh¡t. It will always sell but having beaten it I think it'll either get better over time or worse.

The fact that NSoft had to hire custom chart designers shows. Had they fixed the unreal charts I would be satisfied.

Another "Last Generation" checking in.

I'm also here for my in-laws as proxy so I'll need two (2) ID badges.

-NICKO68 Yeah, I'm getting the whole bundle, although I already have a wireless RO guitar (instant bass) and a KR mic (don't ask/don't tell). I'm quasi-interested in the drums but would probably never buy them aftermarket, so I figured for the cost of the game and the new axe, I might as well get those drums up front.

Longdarkblues - I'm with you on the poor investment, but shelling out for a whole new system that I don't really "need" (I'm doing just fine with the PS2 for now). But I'm sure I'll rue my decision when that "Who's Next?" album gets released. Here's hoping that some of that DLC comes out on a bonus disc for PS2 one day.

I'm a PS2 user, as well. I toyed with the idea of getting a 360 just for this game, but decided against it in the end. Although the DLC is pretty cool, nothing has been announced yet that I can't live without. Spending $160 is hard enough to justify in my mind... spending $600+ just for one game isn't worth it, even for Rock Band.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll offer bonus discs down the line. If not, maybe they'll figure out some way to download the songs. Pretty huge longshot, but I can hope. I just wish they would release some actual details about the game. My biggest fear is that they are going to get rid of the features that scream next gen to me (customized characters, WBT, etc.).

(sorry for the grammar, im not a natural english speaker)

Count me in :D

Last Gen to the very end.

I'm getting the whole bundle, although I already have the cherry SG and by strange circumstances, a USB Mic...but i like a lot the design of the Stratocaster, and I want to play the drums...and of course, with the Cherry, i would complete the duo Guitar-Bass.

But of course...my concerns:

-Stratocaster quality...if the ps3/360 seems to have their good set of problems, I fear that this version could be even worse. Moreso, the first immpressions of Guitar Hero III have reported tons of defective guitars, mainly because of the wireless; and in this case, without Red Octane accesories experience...

-general graphics...yeah, i know that this games are not about graphics...but it would be very dissapointing if (apart from the obvious reduction in polygon count and no HD) the framerate, playspeed, or the character animation gets downgraded.

-Playmodes...well, the download content is a great lose, but with that out, maybe they could leave everything else, i hope i could still use all the (offline) mechanics of the current gen version (like all the create a character options)...but of course, we still need to know a lot of the actual options of the main one(we would be able to change instruments mid carrer?...we would be able to create our entire band even in solo mode?)

PS2 is December 18, that date is straight from Harmonix. :)

DLC means DownLoadable Content, meaning that you'll be able to download songs and pay per song or pack of songs.

You are right...like with GHIII, DLC aren´t going to be available in the ps2 version...and surely neither in a possibly future wii version.

Another thing that bugs me out about this one is the demand...i hope I could obtain one without preorder.

Holy crap dude! Since when was next gen Rock Band $510? ;)

EDIT: Oh, just kidding. He meant he was only buying the game, alone, $50. lol Okay, ya got me.

Does anyone know for sure if DLC will be available on PS2? I've gotten conflicting opinions at the same store, and no help from official press.

I have no system at all, but friends have PS2 & we play GH. I'd like to get a PS2 player & split the Rock Band bundle with them. But no new tracks would seriously detract.

There is definitely no DLC for PS2. The PS2 has no online component like XBoxLive, and no storage for tracks (new PS2s don't support the hard drive).

I am buying the PS2 bundle because I can't justify the cost of a new system considering the small amount of time that I actually spend playing games (the wife wouldn't let me anyway). It would be fantastic if they release some of the DLC content as bonus discs but am not holding my breath. I have two of the wired GH controllers ad hope they will work as the bass for RB. Does anyone no if the PS2 instruments will work on a PS3 in case I change my mind about buying a new system sometime in the future?

I ordered from Amazon because I am too cheap to pay the sales tax at a regular store and don't want to go to the mall that close to Christmas. Hopefully it ships quickly.

I'm under the impression that the PS2 instruments are the same as PS3 and come with a USB hub to connect to. Now other threads are stating that existing GH guitars for the PS2 aren't working w/ the PS3 so there's no telling.

As for PS2 expansion discs, I'm skeptical, but hope they come out.

Thanks for the reply.

I've seen other posts talking about new content going to be available on disc instead of download for PS2. I also read that the PS2 version will have other features not in the PS3 or Xbox, to make up for the lack of online play. Anyone know more about these statements?

My main buying factor is, I can save a lot of money going with PS2, but what would be the point if you can't get new songs?

Here's the only source I've seen reporting the PS2 RB guitar will be compatible with the PS3: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/11/05/wireless-guitar-works-with-ps2-and-ps3-versions-of-rock-band

That article makes the assumption if the guitar works then the drums should work too (since they are both USB based). I wish it cited an official source. I'm waiting for official details on the PS2 version, they should be coming soon.

I would be enormously surprised if more songs ever came out for the PS2. A year from now the install base is going to be even smaller, and a high-cost game is going to attract people with high-cost systems. I loved my old PS2 - both of them as long as they survived - but I just can't see them putting that much work into a last-gen system. Also, it probably changes the licensing deal to release it in hard copies.

No dlc for ps2 verson but if they do make DLC for a Wii verson if they even make one i think that would work out pretty well with that Wii shop channle thing nintendo has going on
