View Full Version : Burn - Only Tier 7 drums?

Ok...I have to ask...why on earth is Burn only tier 7?
It's starts off with a simplified vasoline repetitious rhythm, not too bad(actually FC'd the section on my first sightread =p )...then goes into a "fast part like green grass" blue-red-bass mixup, then back to the vasolineish part...
Then it goes to an unforgiving RttH/Train speed drumroll with varying bass pedal hits. (not a steady beat like most of RttH) It's kind of like an unholy mix of RttH and Outside. And you go down for mistakes as quickly as you do in the middle of Don't Fear the Reaper (or verse 2 of RttH which is generally more forgiving), -and- it lasts longer than Reaper's hard part.
Maybe it's just tapping into my weaknesses, but why is this only tier 7? This is the lowest tier DLC song to ever challenge me like this. (though I -will- get it someday, though...I hope...) I like the challenge, but it's underrated. :P
p.s. A second, longer one appears later in the song. Dear god.

Yeah, it should be tier 8 or 9. I barely got 4 stars on Hard and I usually play on expert....Tough song...All the NIN are rough this week, usually due to my arms giving out half way thru...I don't have real drummer stamina

No I'd say that its probably where it should be. The red roll stuff is really the only part of the song thats hard. It did make my arms ache like hell when I finally beat it.

Sounds like an easy song to me :)

tier 7 sounds alright I guess, maybe 8, not 9 by any means though.
it has tough parts, namely that speed roll with kicks, it drains your energy meter quite fast if you don't keep up.

I failed my sight-read, but only because my red and blue pad gave out simultaneously, picking up maybe 1 out of every 20 hits.
Otherwise, the Pedal beat isn't too difficult, and the speed is the same as in RttH. Tiring yes, difficult... not really. But that's just me.
Outside is actually still hard for me since in the 2nd half, one of the Pedal beats is off beat, and that still throws me off.
Oh, and I think tier 7 is fine. Definitely not a Tier 9 song.

Well, I guess it's hard to say because the DLC songs seem to be all over. (i.e. Eminence Front is only T1) But here's why I think it should be Tier 9:
Burn's "drum machine" part appears first for about 30-40 seconds, then again for 1:10 to 1:30. It's a long, unrelenting drumroll with yellow's every 8 and a consisent but complex bass pedal pattern. It also treats all reds as snare drums, not cymbals. You cannot pause unless you get the energy sections which take about 60 or so notes to cinch.
- Train Kept A Rollin's drumroll is the same speed, just a drumroll, and lasts about 20 seconds. Though in its defense, it treats red as snare. Tier 7.
- Outside has a slower drumroll the entire time, with an off-beat foot pattern but a consistent one nonetheless. But the red pad is a cymbal, which makes it more survivable. Tier 8.
- (Don't Fear The) Reaper: Has a complex outside-speed drumroll with a repeating but fast foot pattern, which if you fall off the beat, you die. Similar to harshness of Burn but slower drumroll. Tier 8.
- Run to the Hills: Red is treated as a cymbal everywhere except the second verse. Has many easy to get energy sections and split-second breaks. (which are little but they help) Has an easy foot pattern which you can really autopilot your foot with, through most of the song. The bass pattern at 70% at least clearly matches the bass guitar's note changes which makes it easier. The triple bass, you can skip the one in the middle and survive. Also, since red = cymbal, you can miss a lot before you die. Tier 9.
Considering people who've beaten the expert endless setlist (i.e. "Alex" on YouTube) can't do it because the pattern is breakless and you must get at least 90% of it just to survive... I've even managed RttH in a band before. (died once =p but I made it) Consider that you die faster in bands.
All these together, it should be a Tier 9 song. Real drummers will find it easy but us mere mortals who can at least do RttH, can't do this.

I don't think it's that hard; it's just really fast at times.

and it lasts, it's not going fast for a few seconds.
it goes for a while, then ends and starts again.

I think it's tiered well. The only reason it is as high as 7 is because of the rolls. If those weren't there it would be a 3. On the other hand if the whole song was rolls IE RTTH it probably would be a 9.

I love the dichotomy of Rock Band... how a song that is so mind numbingly boring and simple on one instrument (Guitar) can be insanely difficult on another (Drums)

That's not the dichotomy of Rock Band. That's the dichotomy of Rock music period :)
Case in point: AC/DC is remarkably boring and repetitive to play on the drums. So is Judas Priest. But both are quite interesting on the guitar. (And I'm talking about the real instruments, not the game)

Sigh.
I wonder how many people actually play it instead of just looking at the chart.
It seems people are missing the point that you go down faster for mistakes in this one than RttH. Looking at the chart alone, I'd agree with Tier 7...but you have to get almost every single beat. (you don't in RttH)
I beat RttH 2 out of 2 runs the same day I tried Burn about 15 times before giving up.
Gah, I hope HMX keeps this in mind in future ratings. The T7 rating is going to make this song haunt me for awhile, even though I've gold starred one T8 and 5 starred several 8's -and- 9's. (plus I'm 20k away from 5G in T9 Flirtin'...gah)

Haunt you? Really? They're completely arbitrary. A "best guess" by some people at HMX, if you will.
Why do you care so much about the tier ratings of songs?
Hell, I've gold starred nearly all of T8 and T9, and I still can't get more than 4 stars on Dead on Arrival. But it doesn't haunt me :p

Enter Sandman shouldn't really count as a T8 song, though ;)
True that, but even the chaotic Won't Get Fooled Again is easier than this song.
And that's why I mentioned the many 5-stars. (because Flirtin' should only be T6 or something too) :D
Oh, Dead in Arrival haunts me. That song _sucks_. It looks like baby Plucky went "I push the button" all over that song. :D

i think that they are gearing us up for harder songs... what used to be T9's are now T7's. so they can't put everything down as a T9.... if we ever get songs that possibly have double bass charting in the future, what will those songs be classified as??
.... "well these go to eleven".
i dunno, just a thought...

Oh, they do. All three DLC Metallica songs in that particular pack have parts that are harsh with a single bass pedal.
That pack also broke my pedal. (right now it's taped up with gorilla tape :/ )
