So is anyone planning out their drum fills? In rhythm games there are those who go after scores and those, like me, who go for style. This site has some videos on drum fills. http://www.expertvillage.com/interviews/drum-fills.htm It's better than looking like a epileptic kid wailing on the drums at Best Buy.

Planning drum fills, absolutely not. The point of a drum fill is to look like an epileptic kid.

One of the great things about a drum fill, is you are given the ability to improvise. I usually prefer a rhythm with syncopation, but that doesn't always fit the song. As a person that has never played the drums before, half of the fun is going to be figuring out what drum fills sound good, and which ones are complete crap.

I may look into some basic fills, just so I have an idea of what's out there, but my fills will be interesting, unexpected, and all my own.

Yeah I'm experimenting with the drum fill and big ending tutorials to make sure my freeform shots sound very rock.

Drum fills are the most fun things ever. I usually don't flail, but I do something like:

1 2 _ _
1 2 _ _
1 2 _ _
1 _ 3 _
1 _ 3 _
1 _ 3 _
_ 2 3 _
_ 2 3 _
_ 2 3 _
_ _ _ 4

Or some other progression that feels natural.

Planning includes foresight, and trying it out beforehand. Saying that this song works best with a full measure tom and high hat fill. Next time I will use this fill. Etc.

I am talking more like this: I come to a fill, and I play a rhythm. Does it sound good or not? Sounded good, but didn't fit the song, or location. Instead of detemining before I start, just feeling the music, and letting my hands play the fill, not my head. Being in the moment.

when i was playing drums i would just whack around in the drum fills, but then someone else actually played drums during the fills that sounded rather professional and went along with the song and it was so awesome. Makes me want to play according to the tune of the song rather than just whack around

:) yes i will be sort of planning them out by going along with the tune. will I create specific patterns that I will play everything no, where's the fun in that :D

I noticed during Tom Sawyer I was playing my fills like Neal Peart does, especially the later one hitting the high hat (green pad) 4 or 5 times after hitting the other drums.

I also found it fun, and annoying, to hit JUST the symbol during the fills. I did it once and it was pretty funny. Another thing I never thought of was playing multiple pads at the same time. I also saw another person playing drums who just kept playing the same drum beat of the songs during fills instead of going crazy which I thought was neat.
