Ok so I am getting really excited to play the drums and when I get the game (hopefully Christmas) I don't know what difficulty I should do. If I have played drum set before in my life what difficulty should I play? I am asking this not for me but for everyone else who has played drum set a long time ago.

It will depend on the song, but you can always change your difficulty.
Since you have played before, Hard would probably be the place to start.

I tried it out for the first time last night. I have been drumming for about 14 years, but mostly rudimential (marching) My first song was Say it Ain't so by Weezer. I did it on Hard and scored 90%. I know that song really well though. If it would have been a song I didn't know that well, I would have done much worse. My only problems were that the sticks were tied down and I am left handed.

If you were playing it in store, then there was no kick drum. The kick drum is what's going to make the drums difficult, so if you were only getting 90% on Hard on a song you know really really well, you should start definitely start on Medium or lower.

I think drums are going to be a point of frusteration for some people.
In GH, I started GH1 on Easy. Terribly. But got better.
RIGHT as GH2 came out I was finishing up Expert on GH1. So thats a year or so right there.
I started GH2 on Hard, and it was good times.
When I played (and hated...ahem...) the GH3 demo I went right to expert.

In Rock Band, Ill start my guitar on Hard. Should be fine, and fun.
But drums I really do plan on starting a solo carrer on Easy. And just seeing how I do. I can't get my foot to co-operate on a lot of songs (attempting to play a long with You Tube videos in my room...Black Hole Sun is the ONLY one I think I'm great at! haha).
But I think with drums, I will get to medium, and maybe stay there for years. I'm ok with that, and I hope everyone understands that that may very well be the case for the majority of people.
Where as with GH, and the guitar in rock band, you'll eventually learn to hit the right buttons and find a good style to strum, and you can excel - Drums are REALLY like playing the DRUMS.
There's a reason a good chunk of people can beat YYZ on Expert. Because its buttons that are super fun to press and pretend to rock out. But there's ALSO a reason why I think VERY few people will be able to play Tom Sawyer on Expert. Because VERY few people are Neal Pert.

Yes, what he said.
Anybody who can actually play an instrument can tell you that the learning process is long, difficult, frustrating, and requires a lot of practice (months or years of daily work). Rock Band will make that process more fun, but it's not going to turn you into a real drummer overnight.

There was no bass drum pedal, but I was still playing the bass drum part with my foot. I almost think the harder levels might be better because I tripped up wanting to play notes that weren't there in the hard level. I think that if you have some drumset experience and GH experience, you will be able to move up pretty quickly. If you don't have any drumming experience, it will take a while. Just like real life.

Sorry, I only internalized half your post. You said "mostly" marching. So, yeah, if you have 14 years of drumming experience, some of which is time on a kit, then I think you'll be good.
When I was playing yesterday in the store, a drummer was having a similar problem to what you just described. He said that his band plays Tom Sawyer, and the missing notes were screwing him up (I think he was only playing on medium).

I've seen testers who can jump straight into hard due to having solid drumming experience and songs that they know well. But if you've only got a little experience, or you don't know some of the songs, you may want to dip your toes into Medium for a while.
I've even had a tester that came in and rocked the first few songs on expert... But those songs are pretty straightforward and he had to fall back to hard once he hit meatier stuff.
