View Full Version : More Live Tracks?

I personally think the Live at Leeds tracks from the recent Who DLC were a great addition to Rock Band. They capture they atmosphere perfectly and really make you feel like you're playing a concert. In general, the developers have done a great job at putting in all little effects like crowd noise, sing-alongs, etc., but it feels like these live tracks go a step further. So I'm wondering, what kind of potential is there for move live tracks in the game?
Now I know if a live track is to be added to Rock Band, it has to be recorded in a certain way. That point aside, assuming live tracks were available, who would you like to see in Rock Band? There a lot of bands past and present that were awesome live bands and their live shows surpassed a lot of their album material. For example, I think the Grateful Dead's live versions of Sugar Magnolia are much better than the album version that is on RB. I suppose most jam bands would fall into this category and I wouldn't be surprised if RB delved more deeply into this area. A lot of bands have some great material that's been performed live: AC/DC comes to mind (and it looks like they're video game friendly now) -- if Led Zeppelin ever has a change of heart... some of their concerts were just insane. How about the Allman Brothers? Some from Live at the Fillmore maybe? I personally would like to see some Flaming Lips on RB -- they may just be the best live band out there right now. Maybe the developers could program confetti, giant bouncy balls, and dancing people dressed up as stuffed animals into RB performances...
Who else would people like to see?

I feel mixed, because I loved the Who songs.... but the live GH3 songs were horrible... So really I can say I'm all for the idea, given how much fun I found the who tracks... but I'd be very selective of content... Muse is an excellent live band, I'd have no hesitation on getting them.

It really only matters how well the live tracks are produced and how well they're tracked

Kiss live way better than thire cds and so i would like live tracks
Providing the Live tracks would work from the Dead I hope they scrap all the remaining 12 tracks from the albums and use live songs, like Cumberland Blues or Jack Straw off of Europe 72, Let it Grow and Feel Like a Stranger off of Without a Net these version just destroy the studio versions.
I agree more Live tracks from Bands would be very welcome at least by me.

I love live tracks of songs. There is always a cooler guitar solo and drums and bass are often better too. It would be awesome to have some live tracks.

Live Nine Inch Nails would be good, but we already have 2 NIN packs, so that might not be likely.

I disagree.
I bought points so I could get 4 who songs. I only ended up getting 1 cause the other 3 were live and sounded horrible. I will never buy a live track.

Thank you for mentioning that about the Grateful Dead.....I love them but I hate the studio tracks, they are outdated and they stink...The dead were all about the live shows....there are plenty of live masters available and that would be huge instead of these 60's sounding studio tracks.....I cant even sing the songs properly bec I am used to mostly their live tracks from Dick's Picks, bootlegs and other official releases of their live material.

I think every tack should be live, the band your seeing on the game is playing it live so it should sound live.

i agree there should be alot more live tracks first of all it dont feel so produced or commercialized and there may be live masters of songs the the studio dont have. if anyone watched the who rock honors, the Who material that the other bands played was phenominal and most of them are confirmed rock band 2 bands and who says the other bands are not in the pipes

I'm glad there's a lot of support for this. I forgot to add Bruce Springsteen's "Rosalita" to my original list -- also one of the best live songs ever -- I would love to finish a RB setlist with the live version of this one.
A couple other bands touring right now that deserve some consideration: The North Mississippi All-Stars (incredible blues/rock/sorta jam band), The Derek Trucks Band, Gov't Mule (last two are fronted by the current guitarists for the Allmans), Grace Potter and the Nocturnals -- bands like these make a living by touring extensively, not by selling albums -- let's get some representation on RB for these guys and get them the attention they deserve.

i couldnt agree with you anymore LumberJak. When it comes to the dead, studio recordings are just garbage... I would love some live stuff from the boys. i would really go for a scarlet/fire combo for sure.. I was at Rothbury a couple of weeks ago and caught Mickey Hart Band and Phil & Friends. and both shows were good. steve kimock did a blazing job on "fire" with mickey, but it made me sad not hearing Jerry play. SO YES, bring on the live Dead, in particular any thing in the 74 to 77 run.

^That YYZ drum solo would make me burst with happiness. I don't know if that could be topped.
Since we apparently can't get working Maiden studio masters, why not masters of some live versions? I'd pay extra to get Rock in Rio or Live after Death in full for download.

Some people, i think, like to play songs they recognise. And i think most people would react to these different tracks (alot of people dont hear people life you know :O ) like people did to the Iron Maiden covers.
I like live songs, but thats atleast how i see it. :)

Depends on the band. Some bands are 'live' bands and some are 'studio' bands meaning that is where they do their best work. Since a good portion of my favorite bands are better live then in the studio I wholeheartedly endorse more live recordings. I am a big fan of Live at Leeds and I was happy with how those turned out.
As far as the grateful dead goes, sugar magnolia and truckin' live are 100X better than studio. In fact, I think they should have left those out if they couldn't use live tracks. Besides cutting out almost all interesting guitar solos, they are just so freaking mellow they sound more like country then rock. Franklins tower could have used some adrenaline as well. I need a miracle same thing. It bothers me when people complain about how boring or uninteresting the songs sound in the game when I know a good live version would melt some faces
Also imagine if we could have gotten a good China Cat --> I Know you Rider combo instead of the weird studio version that they used. I mean does any dead fan even listen to the studio version of that ever?

"Also imagine if we could have gotten a good China Cat --> I Know you Rider combo instead of the weird studio version that they used. I mean does any dead fan even listen to the studio version of that ever?"
I agree completely -- this would be so fun to do. I want to live in a world where China Cat --> I Know You Rider is released as a single 10 min track for RB.
Imagine "Eyes of the World" live. 30 minutes of awesomeness.
Yes it would but I'm sure HMX would cut it down to 10-15 minutes of awesomeness. All the "Vault" Live material out there you would have to figure some off it would be usable in Rock Band. Fingers crossed !!!

I agree to be honest I don't think I ever listened to the studio version of China Cat and was kinda thrown for a loop when I heard China Cat, China Cat, I was like where the Hell did that come from?

That was actually my #1 choice for a rockband song(s) and I remember posting about it in a thread before the first pack even came out. I figured that they wouldn't want to go much over 10 minutes and using that logic I thought this was about as good as it could get.
I could go on all day about the dead but I think I'll stop now and let the thread get back on topic ;)

Personally, I wasn't pleased with the quality of the live Who tracks, and would've rather seen studio recording.
It didn't break the game for me, and I bought the songs, the whole CD actually, but I still would've preferred the master versions.
Also on that leaked list they have Fire on the Mountain and Scarlet Begonias but as we darn well know it will not be the same as it would of if it was the Live versions that mix into each other..........

I would love for some of Pearl Jam's live material to be brought in as DLC....they are such an amazing band live that studio recordings do not do them justice at all.
Even Flow and Alive are two prime examples where the song takes on a life of it's own live as opposed to the album cuts.

Bosstones, live from the Middle East.
By no means a legendary album, but with "Where'd You Go?" on RB2 and Ben Carr floating around somewhere in HMX, I figure it would be pretty awesome to have a few tracks off of that. "Hope I Never Lose My Wallet" and some of the earlier songs which felt flat in the studio really, really shine live.
And then there's "Hell of a Hat."
What I wouldn't give for "Hell of a Hat." The studio version's pretty good (and I would snap it up as DLC in a heartbeat), but the live version is out-effing-standing. Which is weird, because they're pretty much the same in terms of instrumentation.

Over the Years and Through the Woods by Queens of the Stone Age.
That was a stunner of a live album, discounting a track or two(go with the flow comes to mind)
Must say I prefer these live versions of 'Monsters in the parasol','Regular John' and 'Leg of Lamb' over the studio tracks. Might just be me though.

I don't think HMX is going to do too many of these except in rare cases where the live version is better known than the studio version. Live at Leeds could be one of those instances, hence the inclusion of a few live tracks in the pack.
I can only think of a few cases off the top of my head where the live version of a song is way better known than the studio. Nirvana - About a Girl (from Unplugged) and Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me (which would be amazing in Rock Band). I'm sure there are others, though.

I'd love some of the live tracks off of Metallica's Binge and Purge set.
For Whom The Bell Tolls live... oh god I'd personally drive down to Harmonix's office and hug every one of them if they added that.

The stupidly obvious would be Cheap Trick's Live at Budakai or whatever.
I'd also dig a few songs from Linkin Park's live Texas album. Faint, One Step Closer (unlikely with the master in RB 2) and Pushing Me Away would be an excellent track pack.
I'm personally thinking some of the Rock Honors The Who may show up as DLC. The Incubus and Pearl Jam performances were great. Oh, and who the hell was that guy singing with The Foo Fighters? :O

You know what I'd love to see is the fast-tempo version of "Drive" R.E.M. does live. Sadly, I think they flipped back to the slow-tempo version for their recent live album, but maybe there is quality live master with "Bill Berry" sitting somewhere. The faster, live version of that song is a lot better than the album version in my opinion.
I love the live tracks from the The Who pack. Its different. A nice change of pace and it really gives you a feel for the differences in performing a song live and in studio.

I'm also mixed on the live tracks. I think it is awesome from the aspect of feeling like you are playing a song live but from a singing standpoint it makes it tough because they hardly ever sing a song exactly as it appears on an album. Practice will eventually get you over the hump but just my thoughts.

Threatening to stalk their employees is no way to try to get a song in the game. :D

A lot of regular studio albums in the past have included a live track or two. There was a live version of The Doors "Roadhouse Blues" the popped up on my mp3 player the other day that was fantastic -- definitely one of their live staples.
Rolling Stone actually made a list of their top 25 live albums ever. Guess what was #1? Check it out: http://www.rollingstone.com/photos/gallery/17411224/rock_list_the_twentyfive_best_li -- Anything else on this list you'd like to see on RB? They've got "Tangled Up in Blue" coming for RB2 -- Dylan had some great live stuff too.
