View Full Version : Why do people like Genesis?

Straight forward question.

Because they're good.

HyeJinx1984
07-27-2008, 07:33 AM
But... they're really not. I mean, really not. Sure, "That's All" is catchy, but... I mean. It's not good. It's... not. Phil Collins is Satan.

I don't like Genesis either, and prog rock is one of my favorite sub-genres. But for some reason I don't like Genesis. I don't know, I just find them.... boring

Prog Genesis > Pop genesis

simple. Steve Hackett is an amazing guitaristm, they have epic songs etc

Well, there are a couple different camps when it comes to Genesis:

1. The people who liked Genesis as a Prog band, with Peter Gabriel on vocals
2. The people who liked Genesis as a Pop/Rock band, with Phil Collins on vocals
3. The people that liked both "incarnations" of the band
4. The people that don't care for Genesis at all

I am a person that fits in number 3. Sure, the band took a hit when Gabriel left, but Collins managed to do a good job. :)

Hmmm. I like Genesis because of their sound. I really can't explain it.

Maybe it was my mom. LOL. She listened to Genesis a lot while I was growing up and I guess it just grew on me.

There are quite a few Genesis albums in my collection.:)

Well, I'm probably going to end up listening to Genesis eventually, cause my dad is a huge Genesis fan, and i mean huge (He owns every single album, and has bunch of bootleg Genesis as well.) Not really into them myself though, but they have a few good songs (Selling England by the Pound, i dont know why, but i do like it.)

My dads just a Prog fan in general. Genesis, Rush, Yes, ELP, Dream Theater, Palace, Porcupine Tree, just to name a few.

Much insight in that statement, couldn't sum it up with more than 7 syllables i guess. More than 7 and medication is required.

Im sure theres bands that you like that i would say "sucks" and "why do you like them". Music's all opinion dude.

So I'm asking why. If you ask me why I like a certain band or song, I can cite the lyrics, the musical technique, what I particularly like that is associated with that act, if I have any crushes on the members, etc... what I'm asking is what is it about Genesis that people like? I find their lyrics, instrumentation, and frankly looks, to be absolutely atrocious. I want people to point out what I don't seem to be getting.

What incarnation of Genesis are you talking about? Have you listened to both the Collins and the Gabriel stuff?

Gabriel-era Genesis had a solid prog sound, good lyrics (Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a great concept album), Peter Gabriel at the top of his vocal ability, and Phil Collins doing what he does best: drumming. Their songs had a certain flair and drama that appeal to me.

Collins-era Genesis was by no means bad, but simply not really for me... I was rather sad to see them abandon their 'heavier' prog sound for mainstream rock. I've also never been too thrilled about Collins as a vocalist.

Well, good for you. When you start listing reasons why you like a band, and someone asks why you like that certain thing, it all comes down to opinion at that point.

For example:

Why do you like Genesis?
I like Phil Collins' drumming (why?) -> technicality (well I don't think he's technical, explain) -> well, in my opinion he is, and in yours it isn't. It's as simple as that and it's pretty pointless to argue at this point.

I like the Gabriel-era Genesis. I love good prog, and early Genesis was good prog. Steve Hackett is a great guitarist.
I dislike Collins-era Genesis. Not a huge pop-rock fan, and I hate Collins' voice.

Listen to anything with Gabriel on vox, Collins ran the band into the ground.

Straight forward question.

You mean, the 70's Peter Gabriel era Genesis, or the 80's, Phil Collins era Genesis ?

Because they're two very different bands...

And I'd have to agree : I simply cannot understand how people can like the 80's Genesis

I do lie some Collins era songs after Hackett left, Scenes from a nights dream, No reply at all, Home by the sea and invisible touch

I used to be a huge fan of 80s Genesis and Phil Collins, but now I can't bear to listen to either. And that's especially true for In the Air Tonight, which is high on my list of overrated songs. I should give a listen to 70s Genesis. I never really gave it a listen back then, but my musical tastes have changed since high school.

invisible touch (j/k)

I think we can all agree that this song is far, far worse:

Yes actually does get heat for that, I've seen people call them sell outs before.(Personally I'll take pop Yes over pop Genesis :p). Genesis got more popular from going pop, I think they have more hits than Yes. Yes biggest hits are Roundabout and Owner of the Lonely Heart.(Do you get what I mean or no)?

I agree.....

I actually was hooked on Gabriel's solo career before i delved into Genesis Gabriel era, a buddy turned me onto Genesis after I let him know I liked Gabriel and he let me borrow Nursey Crime, while I liked Musical Box and Gianthog Weed the rest was meh to me, then he gave me Foxtrot and Suppers Ready blew me away, then Selling England by the Pound was great "I know what I like", "Firth of Fifth" & "Cinema Show", then came the Lamb Lies Down and I was hooked and a huge Genesis fan, then Gabriel left but Trick of the Tail still felt like Gabriel was there but things sorta went down hill from there with Genesis with me only really liking Follow You, Follow Me, Misunderstanding, Turn it on again, Abacab, No Reply at All & Man on the Corner from the albums from 1976 to 1981 and then the MTV era started and it was over.

I would love to see Genesis in Rock Band especially the Gabriel Era !!!!!

I know Roundabout is progressive, I was just saying those are the only two major hits. Only one of them was a pop tune that became a hit.

BTW: I'm a prog era fan.
1) Originality: Was it in musical composition or scene performance, they had fresh new ideas and looks.
2) Complexity: Wheter you like it or not, you have to recognize that playing The Musical Box demands a lot of concentration, practice and talent. Not only as an individual player, but as a whole band.
3) Sound: This is very personnal, but I love their sound. My favorite album is Selling England by the Pound. It's a medieval sound mixed up with a futuristic ambiance.

And Serj isn't exactly distinct, I remember hearing another famous vocalist with a voice much like his, can't remember exactly who it was though.

Collins was an amazing drummer, I remember in a Modern Drummer interview he said "I'm a good songwriter, an decent singer, and a great drummer, and sometimes I forget that."

The only solo Collins I liked was In the Air Tonight and Mama, but that was only because those were the only two songs of his I've heard with genuine emotion.
